Can anyone tell me where I can locate this beast, I think it may be the cause of the engine managment light coming on at about 85 degrees or 2500 revs on my Astra Diesel, if anyone else has had this problem and can help me find the cause I will be most grateful. Regards Terry Read more

Not 100% sure about the diesel, but it is in the large bore piping from the air filter box on the petrol engine. Could check on the Vauxhall information if necessary. Let me know

My mate's 52 reg Micra has unfortunately developed a fairly large crack in the windscreen. It runs from the base of the screen in the centre, up about 5 - 6 inches, and then across for another few inches, definately big enough to require a new screen.

Having looked at it there is absoloutely no impact damage and I'm pretty certain that it's a stress fracture of some sort, possibly due to a manufacturing defect in the screen.

Now, is there any chance of my mate been able to claim under the car's warranty? Surely he shouldn't be expected to fork out the windscreen excess which he can't afford at the moment, when the fault was almost certainly caused by a manufacturing defect. Does anyone have any idea if he is likely to have any luck in getting them to fix it F.O.C.?

I remember something about new law saying it is down to them to prove that the fault *wasn't* there at the time of purchase, as opposed to him having to prove that it *was* there.

Sorry to hear about your mate and his car, thats harsh.
Micra bodies seem to flex quite a bit. I remember
parking my 2001 Micra with the offside back wheel on a
curb, but rest on road, and couldn't close the boot properly
as the car had flexed. Definately try and get him
to give it a go as a warrantly claim. Good
luck

That's absoloutely horrific!! How can a modern car be so weak?! :O

Hi,
One of my mates needs to get a replacement piece of plastic side trim (bit between front door and front wing) for a M-reg VW Golf. Anyone know any breakers yards near to Reading, Berks as neither of us have got a clue. Thanks in advance

It *is* under the M4, then left at the mini roundabout. Past the 'Walter Arms' on the left, a further 0.9 miles there is a narrow lane to the left, with a small sign 'Wokingham Car Spares'.

The other one is Berkshire Car Spares, out by Arborfield.

I am looking for a pair of speakers to replace the standard ones on my car. In my locality, I can only find speakers about 4" dia.
Does anyone know of physically smaller speakers which will do the same job please? They do not have to be fancy Hi Fi types, just standard but smaller.
Thank you, Pete. Read more

Maplin will do smaller speakers, but you're not going to get much smaller than 4" that (a) sound any good and (b) can handle any sort of power. The other suggestion would be to look at cannibalising some computer speakers, but again, the size isn't likely to be much less than you've already found and they might not be a suitable impedance.

Just recently had a Thatcham approved CAT1 alarm and Immoboliser fitted to my VW Passat. (got installation Cert.)
Does anyone know what sort of discount I should expect to get from insurers when I ring round in mid-july. Read more

Depends on where you live and the car.
Makes not the slightest difference to me with MX5 in rural location. Some cars and/or places you can't get insurance without them.

Try some of the online quote engines as two different applications.
www.confused.com gets quotes from a dozen or so brokers.

Can anyone advise if there are any problems replacing the existing 4 speed manual gearbox on a Rover Metro 1.1 1993 with a 5 speed. What needs changing, are the driveshafts any different?, speedo, clutch, gearchange.?? etc. etc.

Any tips gratefully received. Read more

Ahh, the 16v GTa, my first car at 17! And i thought i was the only one that thought they were any good! Reasonably quick, and what they lacked in image they made up for in handling, it was excellent!

Shame i managed to wrap it round a tree in a kwik-save car park...

Question Pollen filter
P.Mason {P}

My wife suffers from hay fever, and the handbook for her car(1997 Civic 5 door hatch)doesn't make it clear if the car is fitted with a pollen filter. Are there any Backroomers who can tell me if a filter is installed on this model, and if so, how easy it is to replace it.
Is it a garage job?
Many thanks,

Thanks David and Dave - I removed the glove box today, could see a grey (sponge?)filter behind it but it wasn't clear how it was removed/replaced. I'll get a filter from Honda and attempt refitting on Monday.
Regards,
Peter.

I have a BMW 520 (3.25 years old) in which the trip computer recently started showing a spurious mpg reading of 7.1 mpg. Any idea where the problem could lie and if it is easy to fix?

thanks

I am looking for a good garage in the North West London or Wokingham area who will honestly service a Ford Galaxy diesel without taking me to the cleaners.

Can't help directly, but as this car has a VW diesel engine and a lot of parts in common with the Sharan, it may be worth anyone who knows a specialist for these cars suggesting something as well.

Hi

I bought an MX5 that has the above alarm fitted It has been fine for about a year but on Saturday it simply went dead. I replaced the fob batteries( and re set them) still nothing

As a last resort I removed the main unit and joined the ignition wires to start the car.

Has anyone had any experience with this alarm..ie is the main unit a write off or any other suggestions
