Can anyone advise if there are any problems replacing the existing 4 speed manual gearbox on a Rover Metro 1.1 1993 with a 5 speed. What needs changing, are the driveshafts any different?, speedo, clutch, gearchange.?? etc. etc.
Any tips gratefully received.

The driveshafts are the same- the only thing required to change on the gear linkage is the rod with the plastic ball joint each end. Even the gearbox mounting is the same, so its an easy conversion.
Good luck

I guess this could be worthwhile if the box is cheap enough, or the rest of the car is good enough, but as a car like this would be very lucky to make £400 at auction with the five speeder, I have to question whether it's worth spending real money on another gearbox when you could more or less do a straight swap financially. Of course, if you've acquired a mostly dead Metro for pennies, it's a different story.

The 4 speeder can do 85 screaming anyway...you won't get much more if convert perhaps few more mpg but not much. Go test drive a 5 speeder before you start changing things. Should be easy to find one near you.

Thanks all for the info. Ideas for changing is that the 4 speeder is starting to get a little noisey on the bearings, and the clutch is on its last legs, therefore a 5 speed from the local breakers seems a good option if at the right price and it's an easy swop.
Thanks again.

had a second-hand 5speed and new clutch fitted in my metro for around £200 (it was a 5 speed anyway though). Considering the stick these cars get, i found it excellent on the motorway, could cruise at 90mph easily, still quiet and smooth. Well worth it if your planning to keep the car a few more years (mine was running sweetly at 120,000 miles when i sold it).

They'll go at a decent speed, but I wouldn't want to crash one at 90! If I remember rightly they stopped making them for crash safety reasons. I remember riding in a 1.4 sport or something on a H, a sweet engine and car but...
Rust is what kills them though, not miles as such.

The 1.4 GTa 16V was a little pocket-rocket!

Ahh, the 16v GTa, my first car at 17! And i thought i was the only one that thought they were any good! Reasonably quick, and what they lacked in image they made up for in handling, it was excellent!
Shame i managed to wrap it round a tree in a kwik-save car park...
