Has anybody got any experience with these tyres, they won the Autoexpress tyre best buy award. Read more

I believe manufacturers buy in whatever they can get a good bulk deal on and this is obviously subject to change over the production run of a vehicle. For instance, I have seen brand new Mondeos shod with Continentals, Goodyears and Bridgestones so far. Funny thing is, the manual tells you to stick with whatever the car came with as these are apparently optimum for the vehicle - hard to believe when they keep switching their own "brand loyalty"

Mine expires on 30/6/2003.

Is there a grace period or do I have to renew by this date?

EG - Can I leave it for a week to 7th July before renewing (obvipusly renewal will be backdated)?

Reason i ask is that I am awaiting an exemption certificate for free RFT for use for someone with higher rate mobility allowance (exempt).

It should arrive by end June, but it may be a few days late, hence the question!

Do I write something in paper above the (then) expired tax disc in the meantime if I delay?

Fair point, i suppose for the sake of a few quid it's probably easier to do it properly.

On a Blaupunkt/Honda radio. Labelled 'ARI' when pressed usually just produces beeps but sometimes ARI and/or SP appears on display. Can't figure it out! Thanks Read more

ARI on Blaupunkts or any other German radio may do nothing.

It relates to the German system Autofahrer Rundfunk Information which is not RDS. I suspect in recent sets it may be dual funcion as ARI was only Germany and most countries now use RDS.

My lad just failed his on one thing: crossing oncoming traffic. It was at a crossroads with lights.

He was trying to turn right.
Two learners were coming towards him trying to turn to their right, blocking the line of sight.
He started to pull across but a car came down on the inside of the learners so he hit the brakes.

The highway code says pass the oncoming cars with them on your right and go round the back. I have never seen this done.

Apart from keeping his fingers crossed, is there any other way of dealing with this that would be acceptable to a driving examiner?

Question Rover 216 SI ?
Andy B

Im seriously considering buying my wife a 216 si, 1997(R) auto in BRG with 38K, FSH from an independant dealer for £3,800. Tonight is the part where I test drive it and put my bartering skills to the test (with much rubbing of chins and sucking through teeth). Im after any pointers for this model/range on what to actually look for to avoid a headache later. The car seems unmarked, engine seems to run smoothly, everything works inside and comes with 3 months warranty. When is the cambelt/cat due for renewal? Its last service was at 36K, and no indication of a cambelt change in the service record book. Is the cambelt change diy-able, ie any special tools required?
Any help appreciated.

Ive just posted this reply but it seems to have disappeared into the ether. This is the re-write, so apologies if a duplicate turns up. (where do they go.....)

Dave Lacey; yes it is the CVT - takes a bit of getting used to. I will check the warranty small print to ensure smiles.

Bit apprehensive about using the engine as a torque provider but I am feeling inspired and will definately give it a go (probably). Must be a tense moment for the person holding the spade (the apprentice??).

Have changed a couple of cambelts before (cortina 1.6, bmw 525 (e34) and golf 1.8) which were simple and satisfying (saved a couple of hundred on the beemer but did my knees in as I shouldve removed the bonnet) but looks like my luck may have run out.

DO I also need to change the tensioner? Any special tools required for this?

Totally agree with shoei about training and protective equipment. Round my way (SE London/ Kent border) there are hundreds of spotty herberts racing about in the standard gear of Nike hooded sweatshirt, trousers with lots of pockets, shoei/arai lids (with iridium/ tinted visor) and no gloves. They also ride like utter pink fluffy dice, undertaking, cutting up cars etc, generally being a menace to other road users.

Proper gear is an absolute must. People assume that just because a scooter is not that fast that they don\'t need full-face helmet, gloves/ leathers etc. Technology for protective equipment has come a long way even since I\'ve been riding (15 years)- it\'s just stupid not to gear up properly, given the alternative.

There, I\'ve said it.

Driving home from work tonight, I was just sitting doing 70mph on the motorway, minding my own business and looking at the cars around.
This made me think. If uou look at a "basic" Astra or Focus etc just now, it will come with PAS, electric windows, air con, CD radio, airbags etc as standard, whereas as recent as 5 years ago these things would probably all have been optional.

We know that top of the range BMs etc have sat nav,, clim control, cruise control etc but what do you think the basic Astra or Focus equivalent will have as standard in 5 years - xenons? sat nav? mp3 , DVD??

It wasn't that long ago that a high level brake light was the "new thing".

Where will we be in 5 years time? Read more
