Looking at a couple of websites (just type it in Google, none of them are particularly good) it appears to be based on the mid 90s Celica blandmobile, with more conservative lights and a notchback body, a bit like a Nissan 200SX of the same vintage.

Not bad looking exactly, but surely not worth the hassle of importing? On the other hand, I've seen an imported Y (82/83) reg Mitsubishi Space Wagon and J plate bog standard Nissan March/Micras that someone decided were worth a trip half way round the world for.

I want to buy something for £3k at auction, drive it for a couple of months, then sell it and hope not to loose any money.

I either want something comfortable, or good to drive.

My last car was a 97R Mondeo 2ltr GLX. I liked it. But the front tyres were nearing the end of their life so it was time to sell. Which Mondeo have the hardest/sportiest suspension?

Insurance isnt too much of a problem- thought about a toyota camry 3ltr auto- but cant really insure anything more intersting than that.

A friend of mine is 36 years old and has owned, for varying lengths of time, a total of 38 cars. He does not deal or work in the car retail industry, he has privately owned all of these cars himself.

Since passing his test 21 years ago my brother has owned and run over 250 cars. However most of these were of banger quality. Currently he owns 6 vehicles of which he's running 5.

Hi all,

Its time to replace my trusty 106 for something (a little) more upmarket.

I've got 8K to spend and am looking for something that would not attract stratospheric insurance costs. I'm 22.

I really like the MG ZR, looks and ride, albeit only as passenger and also the SEAT Ibiza. Apart from the name but I can live with that.

Any ideas on best model/spec on these two guys? Of course any other suggestions greatly recieved.

Cheers

Thanks for David. I can't say I'm looking at the Corsa I was just wondering if I went to Motorpoint and they had say, a Honda Civic then I would have to ask if it was UK spec. Thanks for your help I'll bear it in mind!

I have an imported Alfa 156 and the description of the car model is not 156, but twin axle saloon or something, I sent the V5 back to the DVLA explaining that I expected the model to be a 156 Veloce thinking that they had translated the model badly from the certificate of conformity or something, but they sent my V5 back saying I should get a letter from Alfa UK stating that the correct descritpion of my car is 156 not twin axle saloon.. surely all 156's have a sensible description of the model on the V5 and i am not being silly wanting mine to say 156?? After purchasing a 1993 TD Astra, I thought it would be a good idea to use Miller\'s Power Plus additive to give the engine a \'clean\'as it has been probably been neglected (it was only done 2k in thast 12 months!). Over two weeks, the car has done about 180 miles doing the school run, bobbing about town etc. However, my wife started the car up this afternoon, after about 4 hours of leaving it idle, it bellowed white, then blackish smoke. This carried on as she drove for about 5mins before the smoking stopped. Does the car need a good long run to blow out the crap?

Can I presume that this smoke can be attributed to the aditive cleaning the engine, or is it normal for a diesel of this age to do this until the engine warms.

Or is here something afoot? Car runs perfectly though.

Am I worringly unnecessarily?

P.S. It was the sender that was faulty on my coolant temp problem. Thanks for all your help. Read more

Could be due to needing a good clear out and also down to faulty glowplugs.

See other threads regarding white smoke.

I am currently going through the court after my VW Sharran 1.9 TDI dropped a valve after having the cam belt fitted (initially) incorrectly. I maintain that this damaged the valve which eventually failed. The garages defence is that even if the belt is fitted just 1 tooth out then the engine would lock solid. My question is: Can a cambelt be fitted 1 tooth out and the engine still turn over?

Thanks for any assistance.

If it's the same 1.9TDI as fitted to a 98 - 99ish Caddy van the engine will start and run with the pump one tooth out - badly. No damage is done (at low revs anyway). Don't know about the camshaft being a tooth out though.

The rubber belt which runs on the drivers side (exterior) of the engine block causes engine vibration, especially at idle and high speed, as it turns since there is a wobble on the roller/pulley at the top of the engine. Any ideas from the forum as to the cause or possible remedy? It is a 2001 1.25 Zetec LX with aircon. Many thanks. Read more

It was serviced by an independent by a previous owner so it the warranty won't cover it. Any ideas?

When I was a spotty youth in the mid 70's, I fell seriously, seriously in love with a particular type of car and still admire its looks and styling all these years later.

The car ? A Vauxhall Royale Coupe - sleek looking yet pratical (just like my wife!).

MY question to the BackRoom - What car did you first fall in love with, did you ever get to own one and did it live up to your expectations ? Read more

Jaguar XJ12 Mk1 followed by the Mk2. Its what kept me working in school to get a job to be able to buy one. Saw the light though and went German. Perhaps they are better made these days - might swap the 530 foran S series...
