Hello to you all, I hope you can help me......

Does anyone have an OMEGA 2.5 TURBO DIESEL AUTOMATIC and if so can you tell me if the problem Im having occurs with your car, the reason I ask is one person tells me its right, and another tells me its wrong... Ahhhhhhhhhh !

THE PROBLEM - when driving at all various speeds the car handles a treat until you take your foot off of the accelerator, then the rev counter immediatley drops back down to idle speed (around 700 rpm) and there appears to be no engine braking at all, Down hills especially with foot covering brake pedal it feels like car is in "n" position and coasting.
(there is no pulling back from the engine, like clutch is depressed)
When travelling on a flat road at about 50 mph I took my foot off the accelerator and down went the needle to 700 rpm then replace foot and needle returns to previous position with no apprent loss of power ????

Any idea's please....

Omega autos always coast if lift-up below 50 mph. It is well documented.

Please see AA's road test report at www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/cartestreports/index.jsp and look under Vauxhall Omega 2.5TD auto.

Hi
Heard quite a lot recently about car cloaning. I think its mainly in connection with the congestion charge recently introduced for London and ways of trying to avoid paying it. Could not find anything about it on the web (Google etc) or on this site.
Anyone got any info?

I particularly liked the fact that the police didn't seem to be too interested in finding a cloned vehicle which had been involved in a hit and run incident. Of course, it was in the media, so I don't suppose that it's a 100% accurate story.

"Mr Losekann said that the officers told him that they could do nothing because the vehicle?s owner might be an innocent victim who thought he was buying a legitimate car. When Mr Losekann pointed out that the driver had committed many offences, he said the officers said that they did not have the time to make local inquiries or to stake out the car.

At this point, Mr Losekann realised that he would have to take action himself to stop the criminal using the car and possibly killing or injuring someone. He punctured all four tyres. The following day he contacted The Times to tell his story. He rang the police to tell them he had gone to the media and, when he returned to the scene an hour later, he found that the car had gone."

I've had my astra 1.7 TDL (1997 GM engine) off the road for a week now, after it started smoking very heavily (white smoke) and was overrevving intermittently.

I had it looked at and there was damage to one of the valve fingers. When this was fixed the engine still had the overevving problem. The mechanic I took it to also found that the Turbo was pulling a lot of oil into the engine through a knackered shaft.

I'm unsure whether to get the turbo fixed only to find that the diesel pump is also on the blink (mentioned by several people and expensive!!!)

Am I throwing good money after bad getting the turbo done? Read more

Thanks for the advice on diesel pump - pays to do a bit of homework!

Got the turbo sorted and took your advice on the injectors and it's running OK now.

Thanks for answering me Dizzy. I'm sorry to hear about your relative. I can see exactly your point, and as others have said here there seems no ideal solution.

Personally I'd probably go with the idea of drivers knowing the *potential* damage they could cause by reckless actions, and be treated accordingly. But I can also fully respect what you are saying.

And as someone with a relative who has suffered this horrifically, you are certainly well-qualified to have a valid opinion on this.
Thanks

A month ago my wife bought a new VW Polo 1.4tdi. The car had a faulty gearbox from the start - it was sometimes almost impossible to get the gear lever out of reverse. After 264 miles the drivers' front seat tipping mechanism broke so that the seat was permanently tipped forward; VW breakdown had to come out and get the seat back to its correct position. The seat would not then tip forward.
The car was taken into the dealer two weeks ago to have a new gearbox and two new front seats fitted. The gearbox and passenger seat have come but they are still waiting for a replacement seat. The dealer has been excellent with no problems over a loan car. They have 'chased' VW's constantly and suggested that my wife also contact VW customer services.
Customer services keep saying that they are doing their best to get the missing seat.
We are intending to give VW another week to get the car fixed and if it isn't we would like to explore the possibility of getting the car replaced. Has anyone suggestions as to the best way of going about this as we realise this action will open a whole new can of worms?! Read more

The important point about the Sale of Goods Act is that it defines the limits of responsibility of retailer (in this case car dealer) to customer.

It does NOT define VW's responsibility (if any).

Now, it may be that VW put pressure on the dealer to resolve the problem(s), but the responsibility is the Dealers.

Any Court action (if it should come to that) will be against the Dealer.

Any suggestion on the dealer's part that the customer should contact VW customer services sounds very like Slopy Shoulder Syndrome.

Are we paying too high a price for aircon in terms of fuel consumption? I acquired a 1999V Volvo S80 SE(170)automatic in January and have been really pleased with it - fast, comfortable and never missed a beat. Naturally I did not choose it to save on petrol bills and following HJ's advice - and what I have seen in The Back Room - I run it solely on Optimax.

However, HJ's other advice re aircon in FAQ 20 comes at a price - HJ recommends leaving aircon on all the time and running it hot and cold from time to time etc - advice which I have been following. Average mpg around the New Forest where I live (40 mph limit on most roads)is around 25 - 28 BUT increases to 34 - 38 with aircon off, on the same routes and trying to keep to the same driving style. The lower figure is verified by my log book figures as well as the car's computer; the upper figure by the car alone so far.

My garage (Volvo specialists Country Cars of Brockenhurst) recommend running the aircon once or twice a week. At the above mpg figures this would save about £400 a year on fuel. Most of the time in this country aircon really is not necessary - but I don't want to knacker the system.

With more and more cars with aircon this could be costing us and the environment a packet. And just why does aircon have to cut consumption by almost 30% - can't someone improve the systems used in cars?

Oh you lucky people to be driving 5-cylinder S80's.

I'm running the 2.9litre six-cylinder with four speed auto. Great luxury car, very smooth and perfect for motorway trips. But......suburban fuel consumption is no better than 22mpg. Given this remarkable figure, it is not surprising that I do not notice any difference between a/c on or off.

The major factor in these cars must be the four speed box. The mph/1,000rpm figures are approx 13/20/30 for 2nd/3rd/4th gears. So the car spends most of its time in 2 and 3 and only gets to 4th at about 40mph after a distance. Now, with 5 gears, the economy, must be better. However, with all that torque in a diesel, why have 6-speed boxes? Remember the first Porsche Turbo - only four gears, when the normal 911 had five.

Question Vectra Knocking
steveb

Hi Guys,

I've recently noticed a knocking sound coming from the front of my 01-Y Vectra Estate at low speeds <20 mph over rough surfaces.

With the car stationery, holding on to the roofrails - I knew they had some use - and rocking the car side to side the knocking is very noticable, and gets louder the harder I push !

Anyone had any experience of this problem and what the fix is ?

I would presume its the shocks, however the car's only done 30k in 2 years - slightly above average I know - but surely too soon for wear and tear of this nature. Neither of the front shocks are leaking as far as I can see.

Cheers,

Looking at the new links, for what is a large car with a large engine, they seem pretty insubstantial given the potential cornering and bump forces likely ....

I find it very difficult engaging reverse on this car. Also, sometimes when it goes in, the car starts to move backwards and then jumps out of gear.

Also, my exhaust seems to be making a noise from the back box, but i cant find a hole.

Any help greatful, cheers Read more

I had a similar prob with my Rover 214 SEi. It went through two back boxes. But at £30 fitted a piece I never considered it to be a major pain. They always seem to fail at two years.

Usually you can tell when the back box is blown. The first one sounded initially like my heater was on full blast. I never noticed it due to the how noisy the 214 16V engine is. The passenger in my car said my engine was really loud. Then about ten miles up the M1 it just sounded terrible!

But on the last one failed in a weird way it looked as though I had a birds nest in my exhaust. When someone pointed out that there was threads sticking out of my exhaust tail pipe I thought the same! But took it to garage who fitted the box. They pointed out that the baffle had failed internally. When they fitted the new box, the car felt like it had been given a new lease of life. That is until the cat failed :(
