..... plus VAT - available from your friendly Volvo dealer now!!
Listed on recent service invoice - £0.70 per 0.1litre. The S80 takes 5.8 litres, so that'll be £40.60 +VAT = £47.70 , Sir.
Following a recent debacle DIYing SWMBO's Passat, I was considering giving up spannering for good - but after this experience I think I've changed my mind!
Can anyone better this for a rip-off oil price? It irks me in the same way that restaurants will charge £20 for a bottle of wine they've picked up from the cash & carry for a fiver - and all they have to do is pull the cork.
Mind you, I did get a complimentary tin of mints when I picked the car up - made me feel a whole lot better :-)
I know - someone's got to pay for the staff and the swish showroom etc. - but still.........! Read more
I recently moved to a house just yards from a busy rail line. Six weeks later, I've noticed dull brown patches over my car, which was white. My garage said "it's chippings off a railway line", and did I live near one? Nothing gets this stuff off apart from T-Cut. Is there anything else anyone knows of that's less damaging to use, and which isn't gonna involve 3 weeks of elbow grease per month? I've already invested in a car cover.
I have looked at the house's windowsills (which were white) and they are deep brown on the horizontal surfaces thanks to this stuff. I'm concerned my white Citroen ZX will resemble an old British Leyland colour before too long. Read more
Thanks for the feedback.
Ouch - the 300g Halfords 'brick' clay bar - big enought to last a lifetime was 2 quid in their "we don't knwo what this is" box.
But, if it does the job - cheaper than a respray.

I have just bought a 172 and its states that it should run on 98RON petrol only, does this mean I can't use 95RON standard unleaded? The only 98RON petrol is Optimax as far as I know so must I run the car using that or is standard 97RON Super Unleaded acceptable..
Also what are the implications of running it with 95RON, if the manual states 98RON only could I conceivably damamge the engine using lower octane petrol or am I just going to experience dimished performance and maybe a bit of pinking? Read more

Anyone got any comments?
I thought it was amazingly realistic, even if the probability of all the circumstances occuring is thankfully very small.

I watched the programme with interest. Apart from the plane crash which really was the perfect end to a perfect day! I was starting to think that this was becoming a scenario for a Chief Constables promotion board.
Seriously though 2 of the right type of incidents on the M25 at almost the same time and at peak time could bring the area to a grinding halt. This could isolate either incident from the appropriate emergency help and cause stalemate with severe knock on effects.
As for the knock on effects as far as Manchester and further - well a little bit of artistic licence perhaps.
I chuckled when the bobby had implemented the detour and found roadworks that could not be passed and then met head on another detour from another force area. You may laugh!!!!!!!????. How often have we questioned wether or not left and right hands are working together?
I have seen this happen on a far smaller scale where a main arterial road is blocked and then the same happens on a detour and a town/city becomes gridlocked - it does not take much we are running to capacity. Obstructions have to be moved quickly and efficiently but this takes time. Transfer loads from tankers and lost loads can be a time consuming nightmare.

Honest John,
I am considering the purchase of a 1997 (R) Reg Discovery Arden 2.5Tdi Auto. with 71,000 miles on the clock. I have read test reports etc. and some of the backroom messages. Has anyone got and advice or tips as to what I should look out for.
Thanks

>only bettered off road by other Land Rovers<
Obviously never heard about or driven the 80 Series Cruiser and Gelenderwagon, both with 3 lockers and both reliable.
They will leave any LR for dead off road.

Any opinions on the following please: Our new Citroen C3 16v HDi diesel has done 1,000 miles and it has used approx 0.75 litres of oil. It has been driven snail-like as I want to build up the rpm slowly, I beleive this used to be called 'running-in'!
Our Picasso HDi diesel, by contrast has not used a drop in 8,000 miles. Naturally I'm concerned that there may be a problem with the C3.
Can anyone allay/promote my anxiety?
regards,
Alf

Andrew,
Yes I too worry where we are leading with the car that becomes disposable after the three warranty because no-one can afford to fix it.
But as ever in defence of the Citroens....
Have a slightly longer look at the site and notice there are only 48 posts on the C3 problem page...and 26 of those by the same grumpy guy who looks likely to be the first to bang on the counter when his crisps are soggy.

Opinions please: we're about to replace a 7 yr old VW with a reliable smallish car (wifes instruction) for use by wife and offspring, on mostly town and minor road work. Narrowed down on reliability and insurance cost grounds to new or nearly new Honda Civic 1.4, Jazz (1.4 of course) or Yaris 1.3. I'm a little more inclined to the Civic, but the Yaris looks neat to the females. All seem competent and much the same price, within about £1000, with some shopping around. The mix is brand new discounted Yaris T3 (the revised one), nearly new Civic 3-door S (garage courtesy car) and low mileage pre-May update yellowish Jazz SE. I can't make a rational choice except I think maybe the Civic could have been thrashed by the uncaring. The Jazz is a horrid colour, so the Yaris is leading by a nose. Anything I've overlooked? Yes, I agree the Jazz is well planned and attractive internally and the seats feel much better than the Yaris. It goes well also. I'm determined not to pay the inflated list price so might not resolve this as quickly as we'd like!
My 96 827 has developed a tappet noise at start up.It seems to be just one tappet sounding off and it rapidly disappears if revved.I think I may have read something on this subject but can't locate where. Is it an idiosyncracy of this engine and something to live with? Car has done 60 thou with oil and filter changes every 3000 miles Read more
you have a hydraulic tappet that is losing pressure overnight. This sometimes happens and does not mean there is actually anything wrong with it. Once you start up, oil is forced into the tappet and it stays hydrauliced. Suggest you change the oil to that recommended in the owners handbook. You might consider doing an oil flush to as it might be a bit gummed up which is common on these engines.

...VD5D, if I recall correctly.
Was it you who said that if you had another V70, you'd have 16" wheels instead of 17", after SWMBO had wiped the more exposed rims on the latter down a few kerbs? I think so, but if not it was someone else on this Forum a while back.
Well, I have just done the same on our new V70. :-(
Thank heavens it was not Mrs, especially as she has wiped her 306 down more lefthand kerbs than you can shake a stick at, and I'm forever reminding her to keep right! I guess I'll still get a wry smile later this evening though!
In my case the atrocious V70 steering lock is at the root of it: Very heavy crawling traffic both ways on main road leaving work. Waiting to turn right, a driver coming from the right held back to let me out, as did the car coming from the left, but I was partly blocked by a bus going in my direction. Feeling an obligation to 'go' (colleagues behind, too) I therefore swung left, then right to tuck in behind the bus, so I am oblique to the road, and not blocking anybody in the crawling traffic. Of course, I ran out of steering lock. Krrrrrrrrrrr for a third of a wheel revolution down the kerb... Right through to the alloy it is, too. Aaaargh. More annoying that it's our car, when I haven't touched a kerb in years of company cars! Oh for 16" rims (and I have just read on one of the Volvo web sites of a guy who wants to fit 20" rims to his!)

Either way, its still OTT.
