I have 99 T Reg Fiesta Ghia which has a heated windscreen. One half of the heating element works but the other half doesnt. I have checked the fuses but cannot see anything wrong. Can anyone tell me why this is happening? Will i have to have the winscreen replaced?

Thanks

If your Fiesta has the same circuitry as the Scorpio, then there are two completly seperate circuits for the screen. Suggest that you disconnect all cables at either side of screen and test with test lamp, at least you wil determine if screen u/s.

Last Friday I got held up by a minor accident on a rural road on the way to work.
The cause of the accident was a car skidding on ice, which in itself was caused by water coming OUT of a drain, evidently due to a blocked drain pipe a little way down the hill. This had been the case for a week, since the last heavy rain, but this was the first time there had been heavy frost and ice since that time.
When I got to work I fired off an e-mail to the council responsible and got a reply the same day thanking me for drawing it to their attention, giving the name of the guy who would attend to it and a reference number.

The moral is, if you see a road hazard, don't assume that someone else has reported it but the relevent authority has failed to act.
Maybe if I had contacted the Council at the beginning of the week I could have saved two bent cars and a delay.

I've got up to £15k to spend on an estate with leather interior that's going to last me 4 years, putting about 15,000 miles on it each year. From a depreciation and servicing/repair costs point of view, which is better for me, a 7 seater 1997 or 1998 E Class auto 300 TD/240 with 90 to 95,000 on the clock (£13,500 to £14,000) or SAAB 95 2.3 Aero or SE from 2000 with 40000 to 50000 on the clock (£14,000 to £14,500). Audi A6 is not an option in my book! Thanks for your replies Read more

To be fair to Volvo, the V70 is actually one of the newer designs in the class.

The E-Class, 9-5, 5-series, Passat & A6 Avant have all either reached or are near the end of their design lives.

Sorry if this sounds patronising, but if you don't have an owners' manual, get one.

This is the best place to solve any problems, because it's full of FAQs. If, one you've got that, you still can't solve your difficulties, come back to us.

We're happy to help, but a few simple steps (like reading the manual) will help us to determine whether or not it's a question of pushing the switches the correct way - which only a few people will know - or a problem with the electrics, which could be universally applicable from most cars.

Given the age of the car, my money is on the light being wrongly set up, but if you go through the manual it'll probably either be a fuse or a bulb, either way nothing major.

Mark - obviously delete this thread as soon as you've read it, couldn't remember what your email address was...

I am very interested as to the outcome of Volvoman's thread - Would it really pose a legal threat given there is no mention anywhere of names (ie. the responsible company along with Volvoman's own name) - in effect surely it is almost like going on a legal advice forum and hearing the same responses?

Given that others were also interested in the outcome, would you permit me to be emailed by Volvoman etc (on daniel_r_jeffery@hotmail.com) and I will stick it on my own webspace?

Anyone got one ? What do you think of it ? I'm thinking of buying one as a change instead of a Mondeo/Vectra/Passat/Mazda6 etc I've looked at. Don't need a 4x4 but need the room for kids and a dog. 03 spec looks good with cruise and climate control. Local dealer has offered more in PX for my Vectra Estate than any other dealer ! Read more

FC, good point ref caravan. (aaaaargh caravans!)I have been considering SF as we hope to upgrade to twin axle at some stage. Besides being considerably cheaper than other 4x4s, the SF has a (comparatively) high kerb weight which puts it in a sort of class of its own, and permits towing of most of the current (very heavy)twin axles. (much heavier than XTrail)
5-year warranty is attractive for buying new. Anyone confirm diesel mpg? Let us know how it is towing caravan.

1995 K11 Nissan Micra. Blaupunkt radio/cassette, factory standard.

The auto play cassette has suddenly stopped functioning. Radio is OK.
Normally, you slot a cassette in and it should start to play.
Also, the Fast Forward is not working. Press the FF and the "spools" do not rotate as they should.

Any ideas on this?
Thanks

Can you buy drive belts at Halfords?

No. Try somewhere like Tandy, or Maplins.
Or is it possible to patch up the existing one

Er, no.
presumably I have to see if I can did it out...
Theres not a lot you can do, though, just poking through
the "letter box"!

You'll need to remove it from the dash (got the security code handy?) and then remove the casing. More than likely it will be held together with torx screws. If you're careful you can sometimes get these undone using watchmakers screwdrivers.

swmbo is annoyed by the lads calling at the plumbers merchants next door to us who pull onto the forecourt and leave their engines running while they nip in for a box of elbows/fag/brew
etc. In the morning this can be a bit irritating as two or three vans all arrive together . Why don`t they switch off their engines ? I suspect it`s a throwback to when diesels were hard to start so the easy option was to leave them running but todays refined diesel engines should be more reliable , so why do they still do it ? With the shots that Bin-men have to take I doubt they would come to any harm if they drank the diesel.

Daft suggestion I know, but given the lengths manufacturers go to in reducing NVH inside diesels, isn't it about time they considered those poor people outside the car? Surely it can't be too difficult to add a touch more flame-retardant sound-proofing on the wing inners, perhaps fitting the pump and injector mountings with soundproofing as well.

Won't solve zz11's problem overnight, but it would be a start.

This coming from a diesel driver....

Mark - wanted to post this on the I have a question thread but can\'t access it so please bear with me.

On Friday PM my wife, who works part time for a= high street chain was serving customers at the till. She served a customer in the queue who had already been rude to another member of staff and proceeded to the next. Suddenly the first customer started shouting and complaining about my wife\'s failure to pack her bag. My wife had never been told that bag packing was compulsory and had already started serving another customer. The truth is she panicked and didn\'t know what to do. Whatever she did, she thought one of the customers would be upset. The complainant demanded to see the manager and to cut a long story short, my wife was suspended till today. She was never rude to the customer, didn\'t know that bag packing was \'compulsory\' and has never received any training in customer service or dealing with aggressive customers. We both feel this is very unfair and whilst acknowledging that she should have packed the bag, feel this action is a complete over-reaction. It appears that, despite having another member of staff\'s word that the woman had already been rude to her for no reason prior to the incident, they are taking her side and going to punish my wife. She has worked there for about a year (22 hrs per week) and has had no other significant problems in this time. For those who don\'t know, she is foreign and this is her first proper job in the UK. We don\'t know what the outcome will be and I\'ve told her to accept a written or verbal warning if one is given as she doesn\'t want to put a future reference at risk. I fear worse may happen though and, if so, wonder what she can/should she do.

Can anyone offer any advice please. Read more

Hi Mark - and thanks for your input once again.

We feel that this is the real agenda here and the incident on Friday was an opportunity for a certain person to get some brownie points with HQ and do the dirty on my wife.

Anyway have spoken the a very helpful lady from the local law centre and been advised to appeal against the decision and then consider invoking the grievance procedures in respect of all the 'naughty' stuff done to my wife during and prior to this episode.

Not sure if Mrs V is ever gonna be happy working there but she will have to be for a period if she wants to follow the internal grievance route.

The alternative is to take matters external but we're not sure what would be best so would appreciate any advice on this aspect.

We both want the thing exposed for what it was and all the procedural errors to be highlighted so those responsible are taken to task.

We haven't had chance or energy to search the various links and read up on this but would love to know what our options are now and what would be best to do.

Any thoughts ?

Cheers all.
