Forum Misting up

During this wet weather my car, a SWB Colorado, always mists up when it's left parked whilst I shop or walk the dog. It takes me longer to clear the windows before I can drive off than it does to drive home. Can anyone recommend a product that I can apply to the windows when they are dry which will prevent this. In my experience, with a car that has a tendency to mist up when parked (especially if it mists up more when it has, or has had, the sun shining on it) it helps if you park with the windscreen facing the sun. Misting-up mostly occurs on the window that faces away from the sun. Whereas few cars have a heated front screen, most (if not all) cars have a heated rear screen.

Hi all,

I currently run a 2001 Seat Ibiza Cupra, which I am really happy with. I am in the mood to change it in the near future, partly because I feel like a change, and partly because I have trouble fitting my golf clubs in the boot! I have tested the Leon Cupra R which is blisteringly quick, but as a FWD spins alot (it's £17k new). I've also seen a 2003 Scooby WRX with 13 miles on at the Great Trade Centre for the bargain price od £16k. Also tempted by a Mitsubishi EVO VI, but these are pricy and secondhand.

Opinions on 1) what my Beezer's worth (it has 8k miles, and is very good apart from needing a wash). The Seat dealer offered me £9250 against the Leon R.

2) Whether the Scooby is as good as it sounds.

3) Any other suggestions!

TIA,

Alex.

What do you mean, "outing" ourselves? I do hope that you
are not a golfophobe!

Not at all, it's just that the subject of 'room for golf clubs' seems to have cropped up on several threads recently and I found it a curious coincidence - maybe I have too much spare time.
Actually, golf has a lot to answer for. I seem to
remember that the Jag XK8 ended up being compromised by the
perceived wisdom that in order to sell in the US it
had to be able to accomodate 2 sets of golf clubs.

And wasn't one of the selling points of the McLaren F1 the fact that it had room for two sets?
In my younger sillier days I once took my girlfriend to
the golf course, complete with 2 sets of clubs, on my
Honda 250.

Now that is impressive. What's it like riding in spikes?

Is there anyone out there who own's one of these rare breeds ? or a 306 s16 (xu10j4) engine with ACAV air intake system,
If so i have recently taken out the engine in mine to replace the rear timing belt jockey wheel, Having re-installed it i find that the vacuum diaphrams are constantly open ? this however does not effect the performance of the car, But wonder if anyone owning one of these vehicles would be kind enough to have a butchers under the bonnet of theirs & let me know where the pipe work leads to from the vacuun diaphrams & the ACAV system ? I have tried citroen head office & various dealers but they seem reluctant to release this information ?

Hi there,

On Sunday night some muppet clonked our mirror as he clipped the apex of the tight bends on the road to teignmouth off the A380. Scared my wife witless, as it was a very loud bang.
Anyway, I've got 2 quesitons:
1. We have a 1999 Mk 4 Astra, quoted £80 for new drivers side mirror by our dealer. Does anyone recommend fitting a pattern mirror available from breakers as a direct replacement? Or are they a bad fit etc? Been quoted a reasonable £40 for a non-genuine one. Is it a false economy?
2. Has anyone got experience of changing an entire mirror? Is it an easy DIY job? How long does it take?
Cheers! Read more

Couple of places you could try:

www.dixonsvauxhallspares.co.uk/
www.autovaux.co.uk/SelectCar.asp

A non genuine one probably won't have the inbuilt blindspot mirror.

Easy enough to fit. If electric, you'll need to remove the door trim to get at the plug/socket connector. How long to fit? < ½ hour.

I'm picking up my 'new' 318ti Compact at the weekend (1999 V). As it had a few nice extras such as full leather interior etc. I didn't mind that it didn't have alloys. I've saved a few pennies back for some.

Can anyone recommend a good stockist of BMW wheels? Stupid question but can BMW centre badges be fitted to most alloys or just BMW wheels?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks DVD, I'm down in Essex so it may not be practical to follow this up but many thanks for the info. In fact, it gives me the idea to check the press, E & Mart etc. for some second hand ones.

jc - Will take care. I'm not taking any chances with my new baby! (that's the car, not any offspring).

Yes, haggle. It's a good enough car (based on the Mark II Golf though, but with a modern engine). It's well put together and if you like it, buy it. Even so, regardless of how good the engine is (and some even had the 110 bhp version) the seller will have difficulty getting rid of it because of the styling. Therefore, pitch in with an hilariously low price (£1800) and be willing to go up if you need to. Even if you have to let it go for £300 in four years' time, you'll have had your money's worth even at full price.

Has anybody noticed a strange intermittent whistling noise which comes and goes if your speed drifts up between 75 and 80 MPH (allegedly) on recent fiestas. It sounds like a wind resonance (not another tellytubbie I hope!!).

It's so consistent on various hire cars it could be construed as a cunning Ford design to deter speeders.

Are Ford that clever, or is it just a resonance overlooked during design, perhaps the aerial?

Any ideas? Read more

This could be the answer. If so however, it must be a production quality issue as it has ocurred on 5 different rental cars.

Maybe I shouldn't complain as it serves as a good speed reminder, even with the radio on.

Looking for a bit of advice for past and present owners and people who have worked on Punto's.

My mum is 80% down the road to buying a '99 1.2 60SX, 59k FSH, £3000 Punto. Had a good look on the C by C B'down and various threads on the forum. We are in the process of grilling the garage owner to see what has and hasn't been done e.g. cylinder head gasket, rear suspension problems etc. Assuming none of these problems have ocurred previously is she letting herself in for trouble in the next 10-15000 miles. The garage has offered 12 month gaurantee for £100, my advice was to check every item highlighted in the C by C breakdown was covered on the warranty and take a chance.

Any advice greatfully received, thanks in advance. Read more

My wife's cousin bought a PUNTO second hand (1 year old). It has just got through it's first MOT after having the complete floor pan renewed by the dealer on Fiat's authorisation. Apparently every seam had rusted so bad that the assessor said it was worse than you would expect in a 20 year old car! That work done the steering column needed replacing. All OK now and done under warranty. A colleague at work has the same model and has had two steering columns and trouble with disk brakes and paint. All done under warranty.

Been reading an excellent book "From Ballam to Bollywood" by Chris England, very little in a motoring vein to report but in a passage about the advertising world, and I quote " I eventually found one person who vaugley remembered the ads I was talking about - and they weren't just about Honest John in front of his car showroom shouting about his bargains" Arrrrrrrgh ! It is our little one's 3rd birthday and we have just been given an armful of books from a friend whose kids have grown out of them.

One of the titles is the Ladybird book "Walt Disney's Pinocchio". I am happily reading it as tonight's bedtime story when I come across the following passage:

"Geppetto was overjoyed, for now Pinocchio was just like a son to him. But one morning, a sly old fox called 'Honest' John Worthington Foulfellow saw Pinocchio going off to school."

I kid you not. I nearly spilt my G&T ;-)

HJ, I think we should be told!
