Neither do I -

and queueing up to say "MY car will do it"

hardly answers the question.

Hi all,can anyone help with this one.
Xsara Estate 1.6, the sevice indicator on the dash resets itself 3 to 4 times a year for no reason. As usual Citreon could find no fault when in for service. Not a major problem, just anoying.

By the way, here is a list of problems so far.
- Drivers airbag replaced.
- Airbag warning lights on, wires under seats faulty.
- Leaking oil, oil filter put on too tight when in for service.
- Leaking coolant, thremostat housing replaced.
Not bad for an 18 month old car!

My maintenance indicator sometimes resets to zero and flashes when it thinks my usage is equivalent to harsh driving conditions or low miles especially in cold weather. This is covered albeit somewhat obscurely in the handbook (I can't find it today though!). When I then go on a journey corresponding to 'normal' driving conditions the indicator resets to the 'proper' mileage due before service.

My brother bought in last year a Vauxhall Brava 4x4 pick up 1995 M from a 4x4 independent specialist, we have subsequently discovered that there are two severe cracks and corrosion in the rear chassis members running all the way from the rear to the cab, this is following problems with air getting into the fuel system, due to corroded fuel lines and fuel tank leaking.

Is there any comeback, the Vauxhall dealer says that it couldn't have legally passed its MOT with this corrosion. The Vauxhall dealer said contact trading standards etc.

As earlier mentioned a lot depends on how long ago.

Section 75 Road Traffic Act 1988 - no person shall supply (sell, offer to sell, expose for sale) a motor vehicle in an unroadworthy condition which includes such a condition that its use on the road would involved danger or injury to any person.

Would endorse the advice to pop along to trading Standards and see if they are prepared to take your case on board. Presumably a conviction would help your rgihts under Sale of Goods Act/ civil proceedings to recuperate your losses.

When I fully depress the clutch pedal (of my '92 BMW 518, hydraulic clutch) I get a buzz like vibration which can be heard (slightly) and felt through the pedal. The clutch doesn't slip and there are no gear selection problems. Can anyone tell me if this indicates a problem around the corner?

Thanks Read more

Agree with Mickey Jay.
It could also be the spigot bearing in the flywheel.

Question hot wiring
steve'o'

I want to start my Dutton (which needs a new loom) by bypassing the ignition. I have provided a + and - to the coil direct from battery, then turned the engine over using the starter.
I am not getting a spark from the HT leads?
Does the body of the coil need an earth?
Is it a live or earth wire which goes into the distributor?

Thanks
Ste Read more

lauriew

No the coil does not need to be earthed.
Your feed (from+ve) needs to go to (+)or SW on coil.
The other terminal (-) or CB needs connecting to contact breaker,(distributor).
Are you sure that you have got the condenser (capacitor) connected correctly. Also remember that radio suppressor (if any) should be on (+) side of coil.

I received a letter this morning from a solicitor claiming uninsured losses from another motorist. Apparently I caused damage to their unattended car back in November. They only give a date, not a location. I looked in my diary and don't have anything for that day, so don't know where I was, and I certainly don't remember hitting anyone. Just wondering if they found damage to their car with mine next to it, as opposed to me actually doing the damage.

Anyway, they are requesting my insurance details as required by law. But, what if my insurance co. don't want to fight it and just cough up as it's probably only a smallish ammount, working on the theory thay can just put up my premium to recoup it? Can I just deal with them and cough up myself, or fight it myself? Read more

I wouldn't bother yourself. It understandably has caused you distress and worry but you have been able to satisfy yourself that you have nothing to do with the incident therefore any further costs these solicitors create are down to them. They have no legitimate legal claims over you. Any claims they might alledge just do not hold any credibility. Let them swivel.
It just causes me some worry that your details can be wrongly obtained and then you are subject to acourse of conduct that ammounts to bullying.
Interested to see if Mark or Pugugly have any observations.

I have a 10 month old Land Rover Discovery td5, having driven through water only 6 inches deep the engine has been hydrauliced ( the manual says up to 19.7 inches is ok ). Land Rover refuse to pay for repairs, do I 1) Engage a good soliciter, 2) Cough up the £5500 for repairs or 3) parade up and down the road outside the dealers with a sandwich board stating what I think of this particular off roader.

Option threee whilst ineffective would at leeast provide some satisfaction.

No vacuum operated transfer box on these Ed, just a manually operated LT230.

Ah, OK. Theory meets inconvenient truth, so I suppose the original failure remains mysterious.

I am a bit surprised though....

I wonder if, like me, you have a real pet hate junction that is not simply annoying, but truly, on occasions, absolutely frightening?

I would like to nominate the A12 on-slip (North-bound) at Witham, Essex as mine.

There is a very short accelleration road followed by an extremely short exit zone - about two bus lengths - with less than good visibility.

To make all this much more hazardous, I have frequently been 'lucky' enough to have the driver ahead of me 'bottle out' at the last minute, coming to a standstill whilst I am still accellerating to 60-70mph in an attempt to blend in.

I have been told that the southbound on-slip is very similar, but fortunately have never had to use that one. Read more

M8 through Glasgow.

50mph (universally ignored) speed limit. About 6 junctions in the space of 2 miles. At one point 5 lanes wide (bear in mind most Scottish M-ways are 2 lanes, so they've got no idea what to do with FIVE!) - lanes 1 and 2 are the exit for the town centre junction - but run with the main carriageway for about 1 mile. If you're going onwards, in lane 3, at the limit of 50, you find cars, lorries, vans, buses passing you on BOTH sides at 70+. Further along there are on and off ramps IN THE OUTSIDE LANE! Coming over the Kingston bridge 'east' bound you find a third lane appears on the LH side - being both an on and off lane for 2 very close junctions.

A fine piece of highway engineering!

When the traffic starts to get heavy, the overhead matrices come on with '50' - acknowledgement that the speed limit is not enforced?

Surprisingly few accidents, but you do see an awful lot of very lost looking tourists in the summer!

I know this will be a difficult one. The SouthEast Pacific version of my Nissan Maxima QX (Cefiro over there) has speed-sensitive central locking. Its function is to lock all the door when I put it in Drive or when the car exceeds 15 mph.

After playing with the car's remote, I can activate that function but by pressing the unlock button once after I'm inside the car, but the car does it only once. I need to do reactivate the function everytime I start the engine.

Would anyone know how I can have this function on a permanent basis?

Cheers everyone,

IIRC, the blipper on my old Merc had two functions, one where the drivers door and boot only were unlocked, one where all four doors were unlocked.

I seem to remember that holding the button down for two or three second switched between modes. I just minght be the same on your car. Guesswork, but worth a try.

Alternatively, you could post the question at:
