For all you X type owners, and perhaps for HJ Car-by-Car Breakdown. One year of ownership 16k miles. Lots of little warranty claims saved for one visit all known by jaguar. weaping washers solved fitting of non return valve, rocking drivers seat mod fitted, boot locking system replaced, car juddered in 5th at 30 mph download new software problem solved, drivers door catch faulty had dried out lubricated now OK, next week goes in for two days to have steering replaced squeaking noise, may be bearings and another developed this week petrol guage reads half when full, then dances between half and full, will be sorted same time as steering. Dealership very good and co-operative West Sussex.

\"car juddered in 5th at 30 mph\"
please explain why anyone wants to drive at 30 mph in 5th.
|
On a level road or a slight downward slope, both my old Tipo and current Yaris, and my mother's Saab 900 coped absolutely no problem - in fact they felt more comfortable than in 4th. Also, the Yaris shows better MPG in 5th under these circumstances. Also, I find the difference in engine braking can sometimes make the difference between having to feather the throttle and being able to 'coast' down banks. If you need to accelerate then of course you need to drop it to 3rd or 4th, but coasting 5th is fine. Of course, it depends on the area and the nature of the roads...

Agree SteveH42.

All of the last 5/6 cars I have owned are about at tickover at 30 in 5th. I would extend that to include almost all the other 20/30 regularly driven except for some of those with auto boxes.
This means it is impossible to slow down using engine braking as inferred by others in a roundabout way.
Also, as others say, if you want to accelerate you have to change down one or two gears.
To rephrase the original question why would anyone deliberately choose to drive a vehicle in a manner so that options to control the vehicle are reduced for the sake of some very minor issue. I simply do not understand why.
|
Does the handbook not give a minimum speed for each gear to be engaged? IIRC (when I was young and wanted to read every piece of car-related literature I could get my hands on) (Oh hang on, i still do that!) the owner's handbook for my Dad's brand new company Escort about 15 years ago stated that 5th gear should only be used at road speeds above 34mph.

car in the jag dealer getting the latest warranty repair fixed, will have a look wednesday

Neither do I -
and queueing up to say "MY car will do it"
hardly answers the question.

For what it's worth my petrol-head friends, I can sucessfully - and without any strain to the engine - drive my Passat Sport diesel in 6th gear at 30. Ya, boo, sucks.

Glad to say my 2003 model car doesn't suffer from the problems you've decribed (except see below - but you're right these are known 2002 model problems).
Interested in your low speed flexibility problem though. I assumed this was because of the over tall gearing, but if there's a software fix I'd be interested. Do you know the version they installed? Was it v22?
Cheers

Simon, I do not know of the version, however, I am sure your local dealer will help, my dealer is in Chichester West Sussex.

Richard,
Have you looked at ' The X Type Message Board '? or 'Jagtalk'?
Mainly US posters but also some UK X Type owners and the occassional troll from the BMW websites.
Many, like me, have had the minor problems you mention and some have had more serious problems.
Most have had these problems resolved and feel that Jaguar have done a good job in addressing and correcting the issues.
Your judder in 5th at 30 may be better discussed with BSM if this is not a typo?
Try to find www.alldata.com for the service bulletins for the X Type - there are 2 'General recalls' (minor) and 19 Service Bulletins (minor) - some of which cover your problems...if you cant find this - send me a fax number and I will fax a copy to you - or post your dealers fax number and I will fax it to them?
After 18 months, I still love mine and hope you get your problems fixed....as a matter of interest...I found Alldata from a post by a BMW troll on the Jag site....from the number of problems on the BMW site...be happy you have a Jag!

This what forever dogs Brit cars: don't you wish once and for all for all that money the factory could ship your car with everything right? Isn't that what you paid for?
Dealer response isn't the answer, the horse has already left the barn.
Small wonder people say yeah it's nice but I'll stick with the Toyota.....
|
Growler,
I agree that we should get 100% perfect cars for our money but am beginning to have my doubts about Santa Claus too.
Have a look at the lists of TSBs issued by Toyota on the Alldata automotive recalls page - some have more than double the issues of the X Type - still great cars - but not without problems.

I mean kosher Jap Toyota as opposed to the locally made stuff.
|
Growler,
I guess you would need to know where they were made;
List of technical service bulletins for year 2000;
MR2 28
Avalon 56
Camry 45
Celica 56
Corolla 36
X Type - only starts year 2002 in Alldata - 19 tsbs - made in Liverpool area.
Regards,
Matt.

My youngest daughter bought a new Yaris last May. I thought they were all made in Japan, little sticker on the windscreen says "made in France", it drives well has not let her down.

I agree about Toyotas, Growler. The Jap home product is to be preferred. Perhaps more of the Pacific rim is acquiring something of this quality, as we have no problems with Kia Magentis yet (and by the way it is perfectly happy in 5th at 30 mph, though 4th or 3rd will not be noticed either). Only one beef - only a manual aerial (you have to buy the posh model with the toys to get electric).
But you must know more about that than I?
Back to bed now!
Cheers,
Tomo

Just to clarify the 30 in 5th bit, just happened to notice it judddered, i dont crawl around the country, however, there must have been a problem for the software fix. PS I also have one of those new Cooper S's has 6 gears does not judder in 6th at 30mph.
