No Do$h

I should know this, but I don't.... (shame)

On my drive to work I have to take a RH turn at a set of lights. The lights have a RH arrow which only illuminates for long enough for 2 cars to make the turn legally (usually followed by two on the Amber). Sometimes there can be 20 cars queuing for a filter lane with capacity for 5 cars, so blocking all traffic wanting to go straight on.

Is it legal to make the RH turn when the "normal" green is illuminated by the RH arrow is not? The light for straight-ahead is a standard round light, not a "straight-on" arrow.

Just to complicate matters, it's a yellow-box junction, frequently having the exit blocked by traffic heading the other way and ignoring the road markings.

Am I right in thinking that as the straight ahead light is not "directional" it is legal to make the turn?

Thank you everyone.

The consensus is that it's ok to turn on the stright-ahead green in this case. Of course, I could always leave home 30 minutes earlier and miss all the traffic.....

About to replace the anti-freeze in the Golf.

Is it worth using deionised water? The olde Polo seems happy enough on chlorinated fare, but the Golf's cooling system has suffered under previous owners, and looks a little rusty coloured.

Having resolved not to hog this thread, I stumbled across a thread on an Eng-tips.com forum about removing small amounts (~1% concentraton) of antifreeze (ethylene glycol) from a wastewater recycling system.

These guys are usually knowledgeable. It seems settlement (100% solubility in water), ultrafiltration and distillation don?t work. However, a glycol recycling plant on a railway used reverse osmosis to separate the glycol from the water and the ?recycled glycol goes back into service. Works fine.? Presumably the concentration was much higher. See link below, but you have to register to access the forum.

I wonder how the sewage works neutralise the MEG? I?m sure they don?t put the liquid through RO before putting it into the drinking water. I think I?ll be putting a carbon filter in, a proper one, not the toy ones you see in the DIY stores. I think I?ll finance them glycol recycling tanks myself.

PS Re the DI water system that I?ve got access to; I installed it and maintained it for a while. I didn?t design it. I did get to re-design the bit that didn?t work properly.

Nostalgia thread, after an explosive start, is slowing down.

This is quite possibly just because its run its course. However, on the off-chance that its got too big and people are being discouraged, then we have this thread for the continuance. Read more

I'm sure my badges are around somewhere too, JBJ - some things you just *don't* throw away!

haven't seen them for a while, though, I must admit - maybe my mother got rid of them (have to have words) - but, if they're not still here with us in ths world, I hope they're having a nice time in the golliwog memorabilia world.

I got a one year old 307 Xsi which I want to sell in a few weeks. I notice that I never had the '6,000' / 6 months, first / free service done.

With previous pug's there used to be a spanner flashing at 1,500 to indicate that the first / free service was due. But nothing happened with the 307 at 6K.

I always assumed that they did away with the first / free service and the first proper one was aw 20K so it never bothered me. But now checking the warranty book it says that I should have had the free done at 6K or 6 months. There is an empty stamp block there!

So I'm worried that I've a) invalidated the warranty, b) not given it a FSH such that I'm going to lose out on price when I sell.

BTW, I've only done 6,800 miles on it in 11 months. So I guess the mileage is not really a problem but the 5 months over is.

Whats the score with this? Did Peugeot really ditch the 6K free service? Will it matter if I missed it? Read more

Excellent news. I can't see a buyer complaining. Can you get them to put it in writing?

Forum Mazda 323F

Having totalled the Megane Coupe, I am now on the trail of a new car and I quite like the styling of the 323F (c.1997/8), probably in 1.5 guise. Anyone know much about the car i.e. reliability, driving experience, serious problems etc etc. Any help would be much appreciated. Read more

Not wanting to stray off topic, re. Dave's comment in the stone chip thread. [obviously with a newer car the bodyshop should take much more care]
Is this the normal practice in all garages, shouldit make any difference what age your car is or does it also depend on how wel the car has been looked after.
If so then am I right in always giving my car a good wax and valet before it goes infor service in the belief that if you demonstrate that you care about your car then they might also.

It's intriguing to see the difference between cultures. In the Philippines it's assumed that a full cleaning, polishing and valet (we call it "detailing") is part of the service, and your vehicle always comes back looking and smelling nice.

Your garage tales make me think just how sloppy UK service is.

Are they called plips?

Anyway, 50% of the time both of my remote plips are reluctant to unlock or lock the car from any great distance, and worst case I have to walk to the driver's door (around the wing mirror area) to get it to operate.

But sometimes it seems to work from quite a distance.

Why? BOTH plips, remember, and one has a nearly new battery.

(I presume the receiver is by the driver door somewhere.) Read more

Question easy start
rob car mechanic

has any body experienced problems with the excessive use of easy start on a diesel engine, such as engine damage and causing the engine to lock up? Read more

Robin the Technician

Hi Rob,
Yes, I've had plenty of experience with this damn stuff... Throw it away as the engine does become addicted to it. It also washes the oil off the bores and knackers the engine. Best advice is to fit some type of air heater mechanism in the air intake.

Bought a Punto 50,000 miles - drove beautifully when tested it. Dealer changed timing belt, serviced and MOTd it. Ran really nicely for 300mls then engine suddenly developed a gentle knocking when you're moving, but which stops when you use the accelerator. Think its dangerous? Regards Simon

Thanks Dave - oddly enough we didn't notice the noise until the temperature dropped quite sharply a couple of days ago. Back to the dealer we shall go. Regards.

My electric sectional garage door has started opening of its own accord (motoring link!). As arrived home from work this evening the door started to open as I swung onto the drive before I had a chance to press the remote. Also, after leaving the house this morning, and I distinctly remember closing it, the door was open a few minutes later when my wife and son left the house.

Any ideas? Is it some sort of signal from passing cars etc? I'm worried because the garage is integral to the house.

Thanks

Hi
If it isn't an electronic/zapper fault, it may be mechanical, I have the same type door. Similar fault in mine, I was advised to adjust the "open" screw at the backn near the light on the left. Try that, a half turn in should do it. Come back if it doesn't. Must rush.
