Not wanting to stray off topic, re. Dave's comment in the stone chip thread. [obviously with a newer car the bodyshop should take much more care]
Is this the normal practice in all garages, shouldit make any difference what age your car is or does it also depend on how wel the car has been looked after.
If so then am I right in always giving my car a good wax and valet before it goes infor service in the belief that if you demonstrate that you care about your car then they might also.

I think it's just human nature, so the answers are Yes and Yes!

..or even Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes. :-)

As reported in the press lately the great majority of Brits don't complain about poor service so it never improves which only encourages your human nature theory!.

>>always giving my car a good wax and valet before it goes in for service

Ha ha...like mother in law who always dusts the house before the cleaner is due!

I do exactly the same to cars if they are filthy or pristine. I usually wash and vacuum out the really bad ones (FOC) to shame the owners. Feel pretty sick when some don't notice though.

We wash the vehicle after a service, too. Also mark on the invoice free of charge fitting of 'see through glass'for those that forget it's nice to see where they're going!

Agreed. And the people who do complain tend to go over the top (Victor Meldrew again) so the complainees are often extra-defensive. We're just not very good at it, I guess. Of course, it would be nice if the work got done properly in the first place...

BTW, anyone see the boiler repair men on Rogue Traders? Even made garages look good!

Well yes I do complain about poor service but I never go over the top and have won many an issue just by staying calm and stating my case in a polite manner.
Although I love the Victor series I realy don't "wanabe" like him.

Strange, isn't it.

I always make sure that my car is clean and tidy before going in to the garage for exactly the same reason.

several years ago we used to do a car valet service to raise money for a youth group, just for a couple of weeks around easter for a couple of years. Every car got the best treatment we could - except one - turned up three or four years in a row, filthy on the outside and at least half and inch of fag ash in both front footwells. Imagine the impression that would give a garage mechanic about how much you care for your car

I suppose it's a bit like when you go to someones home (for whatever reason), if they're not wearing shoes and ask you to take yours off, you'll be careful what you do, coasters under cups, etc. But if you go to a 'home' where there's muddy footprints on the carpets, cups straight on the table, etc. you'll not be as careful.

There is also a practical reason to clean up your car. As you clean it you will spot any chips and dints so that if your garage create any more new ones, you will be more likely to be able to notice them and point them out.

Me to garage: Could you please find somewhere else to put your coffee mug down when servicing my car?!

mechanic: whatcha mean?

I point to the coffee ring on the convenient height horizontal full width cupholder on the back of my AX, which I had previously rather naively taken to be a spoiler of some sort...

It's intriguing to see the difference between cultures. In the Philippines it's assumed that a full cleaning, polishing and valet (we call it "detailing") is part of the service, and your vehicle always comes back looking and smelling nice.

Your garage tales make me think just how sloppy UK service is.
