Help and advice required.
My little soldier has a 1999 S 1.4 GLX with 22,000 miles under it's belt and a full main dealer history. Last Thursday the gearbox threw a wobbly and now it requires a new unit.
Peugeot UK are offering between 30%-50% of the replacement cost of the parts only. New gearbox is 1300 and 250 labour.
My view is I go after them for 80% on the basis that a gearbox should reasonably last 100,000 miles as a minimum.
Anybody else had any similar experience and can profer any help. The vehicle is not under warranty any more. Read more

Missed by a country mile Andy.
He will pay for the repair albeit over a period of time. Trainee Chef's aren't exactly overflowing with cash you know. He does a lot of his own maintenance although after many years and reasonable experience with vehicle mechanics the gearbox is still a complete mystery to me.
He has in fact used a push bike in the week his car has been off the road.
What draconian regime did you live under!!!!!

see what i mean no one believes that fuel additives work

I'm sure the additive you used did help, but as ChrisR mentioned, I bet the italian tune you did down the motorway also contributed.
Over the last couple of weeks all I've used my Vectra for is to commute to and from work (7 miles each way at no more than 40mph). By Friday it starts to feels a bit lathargic, but however in the last couple of weekends I've also had to do some fairly long trips (over 200 miles) which include motorway driving. Come Monday morning the Vectra is lively again - which is more than can be said of me at the thought of another week at work.

Having trouble with my 2000X 306 1.4 (45,000miles)

Both problems may be related: One is that the car is running hot very early. Turning on the rear heated windscreen makes the temperature gauge shoot up nearly to red from 90. Turn it off and it drops immediately. I am not sure whether this has anything to do with the wire that has appeared in the footwell at the drivers side. This wire seems to have a metal rod on the end of it. Could it be an earth?

The other problem is a clunky vibrating type noise from the engine. Initially it was only happening when the clutch pedal was released, but now it happens at both times. It only happens when the accelerator pedal is not pressed (ie the car is coasting) and does not get louder/quieter when the speed increases/decreases

I know its not much to go on but does anyone have any ideas???? Read more

I have a Honda Jazz which is due for its first(12000 mile) service. The dealer where I bought the car(South Yorkshire) priced this at £135.Thinking tha this was quite high I got the Yellow Pages out & called a few other dealers in the county.I one found one just fifteen miles away offering the same at just £92.
Does anyone have any opinion on why there should be such a big variation or better the above saving?

I had the car serviced at the cheaper dealer last Friday. All seems o.k.They offered to put GB plates on the car for free, which I took them up on,and they put Castrol Magnatec in the car (hopefully this is good stuff)They also put new dealer stickers and tax disc holder in the car(naughty?).Unlike when I have had my previous car serviced at a main dealer they did not give me a copy of the mechanics check-sheet e.g details of brake pad wear & tyre wear.Is this normal or should I speak to them.

Sorry to sound a bit naive but until the last year we just had old jalopys (309&sierra)serviced by a friend.
Thanks

Do HDI engines with intercoolers have better economy at motorway speeds? I ask because the economy of my dad's Picasso HDI is possibly worse on the motorway than round town. (48 mpg either way). Will motorway economy improve as we get more than 2,000 miles on it? The engine doesn't feel very tight, and feels better than it did when new.

Thanks in advance

We weren't going as fast as 80, but I felt the numbers on the instant read trip computer weren't too brilliant. The average was 50 mpg, I was a little disappointed, but if time helps, lets get more miles on dad's car and save my petrol!!

Hey all,

I am having problems with my Pug 206 clutch (as some members may know!).

Here is the prob:

Sometimes when using clutch pedal I hear a 'clunk' sound and the pedal has no resistance and goes to the floor. I cant change gear when pedal does this. (Although if i bring back up again and try it works!?)

I have taken to Peugeot, who found no fault and have taken to 4 other mechanics - they say same thing (it never happens when with them!).

I have got some response from (ahem . . ) another forum (cheeky!) www.parkers.co.uk/advice/message_board/topic.asp?T...7

But so far no luck! :o(

Another additional fault has also started, where the handbrake light intermittantly and randomly flashes (possibly related?).

Has anyone got any ideas? PLEASE HELP! (and remember I am a novice, so not too technical please!)

I am stuck for answers and worried whenever I use clutch pedal.

Thanx

Hi Spyder,

After much faffing about - thats what I finally ended up doing - it did the trick (well - so far so good)! - changing it is a ***bit*** of a @&*^&* though!

Thanks for the response anyway - feel bad for not coming back and posting the solution!

I have a Shogun with a thatcham alarm, all of a sudden the alarm has gone very quiet, the beeps for the central locking and alarm setting is still very loud but just the alarm itself is very quiet.
It was in the dealers last week, is there anyway perhaps they could have turned it down?
Thanks in advance. Read more

Hi Jud,
Suppose I can sort of appreciate that, problem with mine though is at one point it was loud, but went quiet over night! I think one has more chance of noticing the hazards flashing than hearing the alarm! Dont think it is the speaker as I say the remote central locking still beeps very loudly!
Guess I will have to consult the experts.
Thanks to all.

Spoke to someone the other day who claimed that the most significant factor in car choice is brand loyalty. This prompted me to list all the cars we have owned (excluding company cars), because I couldn't think of an occasion when we have replaced one car with another of the same brand.

Am I some kind of brand 'tart' or did this guy not know what he was talking about?

The actual score of the 25 cars we have owned is:

Mini 2
Triumph 1
Fiat 4
Vauxhall 8
Audi 2
BMW 1
Subaru 1
Citroen 1
Volvo 2
Renault 2
Peugeot 1

So all you profilers out there, what does that say about me? Read more

Always favoured the blue oval in early life, after finishing my motor bike days, traded in my Triumph T25 for an
Imp van (1966)- boy what a disaster, but you learned alot.
Ford Corsair- great car, loads of space, but peelability paint job (saluki bronze)
Ford Cortina 1600E, amber gold- fantastic, spent a fortune on it but it looked and drove great.
TR5- kept for 15 years; easy to work on; didn't appreciate its rarity value until after I'd bought it.
Ford Mondeo 2.0 glx estate; supermarket purchase 8 years ago; reliable, maily for SWMBO.
Would like a Mondeo Tdci estate.

Question Alarm Bother
rg

Folks,

Are the air pressure sensors on alarm systems subject to ageing? Can they be tweaked and fettled to sort them out?

My new XM's triggered the other day. Being a "gadget barge", it has a feature to allow you to disable the sensor (if you wish to cook your Labrador on board whilst you nip into Tesco, but not alert anyone). This worked and stopped the retrigger.

I recall having the same trouble on a company BMW. It usually happened after a long run on a cold day, and was something to do with the air in the cabin contracting as it cooled and setting the thing off. Or stuff creaking as it contracted.

On the other hand, the sensor may simply be "k*******d"

Any thoughts.

(Yes, OK, it is an XM, and, by nature, "electrically haunted")

Both my XMs were automatics, so I didn't have to use 2 left feet for parking brake and clutch! All I did was hold a foot on the parking brake without engaging the lock and pull away. I assume if you had to use it you'd have to lock it on and release it with a bang as you pulled away.

Now some passengers I wouldn't mind shooting out the roof.....:o)

Just to say that I've trolled trough about ten online insurance sites over the last couple of days - very tedious 'cos of repeat info! - and have found TESCO significantly cheaper than ALL the rest (and I'd narrowed down initially with Which?'s advice on best buys for my category). Although necessarily generalizing, I'd suggest any new/renewers try their site. I've no idea how good they are as insurers, but I'd imagine their size/reputation should make them reasonable. They were a Which? best buy for my category.
