I'm popping up there for a new pair of tyres tomorrow. Does anyone have any idea of the best time of day to go? Last time I went was Christmas eve last year, so no queue, but I know it's normally different...I queued for ages one Friday afternoon.

I recently made a couple of visits a week apart, both about mid-morning, both weekday. I was second in the queue first time, sixth or seventh the second time. Can't even say the weather affected it as it was pouring the second time. Also bear in mind you have to queue again for wheel alignment.

I once fell asleep in the middle of a road in a New Forest town. My 'mates' simply watched while a police car arrived and a (nice plod woman helped my off the road.)

No suggestion that I would be charged [1] but she was deeply offended when I asked if she was a special.

Can anyone save me from having to take out a second mortgage? I want to remove the nearside headlamp unit (2 lamps),to replace the glass front, and this involves removing the front fascia which passes under the lamps and around the radiator grille. There are no manuals for this 1995 model. Read more

I can recommend two sites (which I do NOT think are in HJ's FAQ1)

1. E39 forum bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e39/

( main site www.roadfly.org/bmw/ )

2. for answer to your question, go to
www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/default.htm
and scroll down to "lights" section.

( main site www.bmwtips.com/ )

IIRC, you can get manufacturers manuals on CDs from USA - there should be more details about this on the above sites.

If you really want your engine to shine like never before, and have a bit of time on your hands then you should do this.

Take out the engine part you want to polish; this includes all metal covers etc.
Used a metal wire polishing tip you can get for your drill, and take the dirty metal off until you have a good finish.
Then you need to protect it from rusting, do this by spraying heat resistance clear lacer on your new polished surface.

To clean hoses detached them and clean with a strong cleaner, then spray with back to black.

It also gives you a opportunity when refitting to clean the rest of the engine bay you can not get to otherwise. Also you can take the chance to spray WD40 for more protection.

After this just maintain every few months by wiping over you new clean engine with a damp rag.

Do all this and your car will seem like a show car!!!!

I did take delivery of a new GSI in Oct. This is the first new car we have bought. I am a mechanic by trade. I am unsure as to when to start querying faults , or whether they are indeed faults, with our local dealer. The most worrying is a distinct grumble from the engine when revved and re-revved before the engine idles, can hear it from cold but more noticeable when hot. It is awkward to select 2nd gear moreso when cold. The immobiliser system is temperamental and the computer display has a mind of it's own. The return on the front sunroof switch has to be held until closed ( before it was a one touch operation ). The steering system makes a strange groan on first forward turn.I still like the car and the styling is good , however in view of the above I have lost some confidence in it. Any thoughts ? Perhaps the sunroof needs to be programmed, as the windows do after the battery has been disconnected. See your handbook for the programming procedure.

The other things are clearly anoying. However I don't think the Vauxhall dealer will help until a part has failed. They will take it in and smile, and ring you to say it is all done and ready for collection. Then as you drive 50 yards down the road you will notice they have not done a thing.

I was giving my Mk 2 1.6 Golf a bit of a run yesterday. It was running too rich (the waxstat is getting worse, but I should be sorting that out soon) and after about 20 mins on the motorway, it was starting to get very hesitant. There was a drop in power and I had to floor it to get stop it dropping in speed. I was wondering, could this be linked to the fact that the waxstat was making it run too rich? Or are there any other things that I should be looking at? Tis annoying as its just been in for a full service and I was hoping all would be well.

As always, thanks in advance for any help

Yes that would be what i expected. I doubt the chaps problem at the top of the thread is down to the hose between the exhaust manifold and airbox.

Reported in The Times.

A well known celebrity chef get's pulled for driving the wrong way up a one way street - fails a breath test.

Further report a day or so later - he's not to be prosecuted due to a police "procedural error".

Excuse me? How does this work? Can we non-celebrities look forward to more "procedural errors" should we be unfortunate enough to require one?

FACT: said Chef being serialised in self same newspaper.

Toad, of Toad Hall.

Will be buying a cheap car on Saturday. I want to pay about 500 quid but will double that if I need to.

What specific traits do I need to look for in the following Banger list:

Mondeo.
Cavalier.
Astra.
Escort.
Pug 306.
Pug 405.
Granada.

Any info on any engine config would be welcome.

Also:

What pitfalls are there to buying from the bargain trade in corner at a local dealer? I'm assuming they will think the cars they sell like this are OK or they wouldn't be trying to sell them.

Should I discount automatics?

Diesels at under a grand. Worth a look?

I have a 1989 Renault 19 with a 1.7 litre, carb engine, which is in very good condition overall, fully loaded with nearly 83k on the clock.

Among the various electronic bits is a fuel computer that was an option when new (it includes a trip function and a digital fuel gauge). It's very rare on this engine, but it was standard on 16 valve models so parts availability is good.

The original computer failed and was replaced with a scrapyard part, which has failed in the same way after two weeks' use. This is annoying as I have no other gauge. As before, the new part shows 0_1g as the fuel level, and the low fuel wawrning light is permanently on. The temperature function works fine and I have reset the computer.

The 0_1g is also displayed on a working computer if the sender unit is not connected. Assuming that the connections haven't somehow worked themselves loose, and the computer itself hasn't coincidentally failed, what else could cause the computer to go wrong, given that changing the computer fixed the problem originally?

Any help would be much appreciated as no one seems to be able to give me an answer. Read more

DavidHM

On the R19 there is no other gauge than the computer though. Also, I thought it was most likely to be the sender, given that everything else worked on the old computer, but when I asked the garage to change the sender, they told me that the problem was actually linked to the computer unit. Now that the second computer isn't working again, it could be the sender, but I can't help wondering if there isn't some other electrical problem.
