Donor vehicles have always needed to be inspected, if so requested by the local DVLA office.

They usually randomly select a certain percentage for inspection.
The new rules would suggest that all will now be examined.

HELP!.... I own a mondeo 1.6i (1993), i have a problem, When i first start the car after an overnight stand the engine seems to rattle as if there is a lack of oil, I have flushed and replaced with the required oil (5 w/30) but this has not seemed to cure the problem. Could this be anything to do with oil pumps, filters, etc.....Any ideas much appreciated. ps. the engine idles ok after a 5-10 minute warm up. Read more

Big John

I had this problem on a VW Passat I had just purchased at the time. It was caused by by buildups of crud in the hydraulic tappets causing overnight oil drainback origininally from the tappets probably caused by infrequent oil changes before my ownership!(where have I heard this before) . I cured it after a couple of oil changes that were both preceded with a thorough dosing of WYNN's engine flush.

I think I would have to agree with Dave Taxi Driver. A 3.0 twin turbo Toyota Supra would be a good 'un. Costly on fuel and insurance, but a big hoot anyway.

I received a letter today from the chap who imported my car fifteen months ago.
He told me that he was now going out of business as his suppliers had informed him that from now on it would take at least ten months to supply him with cars.
This would appear to be a blatant way to halt one avenue of cut price cars into the UK.
Since the cost saving was about four grand or 25% it seems the car manufacturers are still determined to perpetuate rip-off Britain.

Wh*t C*r publishes list prices, target prices and says where these target prices can be obtained, UK or abroad. Quite a few of them are actually cheaper in UK but not many and not much that you'd want to buy either!

Does anyone know where there is a comprehensive database of 'Turning Circle' information? It seems to be the one figure that guides omit. Read more

Another statistic that Car regularly and somewhat eccentrically reported at one time was '££s per ton'. Interesting to see how a Mini and a Vauxhall Royale, for example, would result in much the same figure. Most other cars, too, the pattern only broke down when they tested something like an Aston Zagato.

Postman Pat brought us 2 letters today!
First one from our motor trade insures. Insurance companies are in the process of building a database of all REGISTERED owners of vehicles they cover. We are obliged to notify them our own vehicles/trade plate numbers, for inclussion, within 2 weeks!
Good idea in theory, but,of course, any dodgey operators will simply not comply.
Second one from the company supplying our numbers & blanks for plates on customers & our sales vehicles. We must NOW keep proper records of who buys a plate, obtaining full? identification of person & vehicle first. We do this as much as possible, anyway.
It will cost us £40 to be registered with DVLA.
Good idea in theory, but,of course, any dodgey operators will simply not comply.
Sorry, did I just already say that?

Dave,
I can get (if I really wanted) an EEC or US passport, a wallet full of credit cards, and as many US $100 bills as I like.
All are fake, but good enough to fool anyone but an expert.
Manufacturing a fake number plate is a piece of old putty...
(oh, and we'll throw in a tax disc as well!)

Hear hear Marcus. These awards are about as relevant, meaningful, justified and unbiased as the Eurovision 'Song' Contest !

As for the Megane - European Ugly Car of the Year would be more appropriate !

I'd hazard a guess that the Dealer used it, or his son/wife/whatever.

Those parts become a lot cheaper if you're buying them in the trade.

A friend of mine has a 'R' plate Golf diesel that has begun to exhibit what seems to be a unusual electrical problem.

When switching on the ignition none of the lights on the dashboard operate and the car fails to start. After switching off/on several times the dash lit up and the car started. However once started to trip computer displayed 'OEL'.

This happened having started the car, driven several miles and then parking for 10 minutes. It wouldn't seem to be a battery problem, so am guessing possibly an earth or ECU problem.

Has anybody else had this problem or can suggest where to start looking? Also, any idea what OEL stands for, as it doesn't appear in the owners handbook.

I'd be grateful for any assistance.

Thanks for the info. It appears that at the last service the ECU wasn't properly reset, hence the OEL message.

The starting problem was caused by the ignition switch, a fairly common problem apparently. A £15 part and 3 hours labour later and the problem is resolved.

Thanks for the help.

Rubber hoses even new ones tend to expand when under extreme pressures. So in theory the steel braided hoses should make for a good improvement.
