Postman Pat brought us 2 letters today!
First one from our motor trade insures. Insurance companies are in the process of building a database of all REGISTERED owners of vehicles they cover. We are obliged to notify them our own vehicles/trade plate numbers, for inclussion, within 2 weeks!
Good idea in theory, but,of course, any dodgey operators will simply not comply.
Second one from the company supplying our numbers & blanks for plates on customers & our sales vehicles. We must NOW keep proper records of who buys a plate, obtaining full? identification of person & vehicle first. We do this as much as possible, anyway.
It will cost us £40 to be registered with DVLA.
Good idea in theory, but,of course, any dodgey operators will simply not comply.
Sorry, did I just already say that?

Aah but big brother, DVLA and the insurance co's are in league, and will be watching from the back of a Galaxy/Transit/Mway bridge near you. Sorry, are watching. Discrepancies will be noted. Scrotes will be descended upon. All transgressions to be followed up. Unpaid fines? Failure to report to court? Drunk as a newt? Parking in disabled parking spots? Unless you are granted an indulgence of course (famous chef etc).

I thought the criteria for manufacturing/selling number plates were made much stricter as of the introduction of the "51" registration and the narrower typeface, 1 Sep 01...?

Dave,
I can get (if I really wanted) an EEC or US passport, a wallet full of credit cards, and as many US $100 bills as I like.
All are fake, but good enough to fool anyone but an expert.
Manufacturing a fake number plate is a piece of old putty...
(oh, and we'll throw in a tax disc as well!)

I also got the 'EU directive- notification of all vehicles' to be insured under my motor trade policy.
I dont understand the wording. My understanding is that ANY vehicle i drive has to be registered with my insurance company first. So driving a car home from a evening auction wont be possible (they will be closed). What about P/ex's ? will i have to phone the insurance company every time i want to run a potential p/ex around the block ?
Will phone the insurance company tommorow to find out more.Just seems if you run your own business the goverment will do anything to make as difficult as possible with ridiculous red tape such as this. If the aim is to stop uninsured drivers then simply put up the fines from £150 and 6 points to £5000 or 6 month jail sentence.
As for the number plate nonsense ... do they really think professional criminal gangs will be stumped by regulating the issuers of number plates ? what planet do these people live on ?
Sorry for the rant....
