My MK3 Golf VR6 is making a sighing noise or whine when the auto box changes up at around 35mph. The noise reminds me of a slipping fanbelt, but always happens roughly at this speed and accompanies the gear change. It's been suggested that this is just a side effect of stress releasing from the drive shaft as the revs drop, but I'm not sure.

There are no clunks or delays in changing so I don't think anything serious is imminent but I am curious to know if this is cause for concern or not.

It's a late '94 model with only 54k miles. Read more

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, which have confirmed my intuition that it may not be disastrous. I will find a reputable independent garage and have it inspected should the noise get any louder.

Fantastic forum this. Thanks for such swift responses.

Question head gasket??
duggie

Hi, l have a peugeot 405 sti 2ltr, l removed the oil filler cap and inside the cap was a small amount of what looked like elusifying fluid, this was only a small small amount, could this be anything other than the head gasket leaking? no coolantloss,
any ideas or suggestions??

I agree with the responses from others. The top of the engine is almost certainly not getting hot enough to evaporate the water that is always there with the gases in the engine and 'mayonnaising' is the result. It is extremely unlikely that there is a head gasket problem.

The top of the engine can be too cool either through short runs or, very occasionally, because cold air is directly hitting the rocker cover and taking away the heat. In this case, I would say that it is short runs that are causing it and it wouldn't be a bad idea to occasionally use the car for a longer run.

It could be a breather or thermostat problem as Norman mentioned, but I think he would agree that, now we know that the car does short runs, these are almost certainly the cause.

Hi,

Again, hope I'm not too late, but this advice might be useful to others!

It's an earth fault, all you need to do it put a new earth in, I connected it to the cigarette lighter and then to the chassis. Solved the problem. Don't forget to use a chunky wire.

Coolant temperature sensor, and / or the cold start injector has given up. Don't know what exact system your car uses no doubt someone here will know!

Mr T J Smith

if someone could answer these quick questions it would be appreciated:

1 - where is the fuel filter

2 - is there a MAF sensor, and if so where can it be found?

i'm asking this on behalf of a friend, and am miles from his car, so can't find them for him.

cheers.

Mr Smith. Read more

the 16V uses mechanical K-Jet fuel injection. It uses some sort of a flap to measure air intake, just passed the air filter.

car fanatic

Hi I have just bought a 1994 Audi S4 Avant Auto, it has been chipped to stage 1 level and has 270 HP, it is a great car, fantastic to drive and fast the only trouble is I am only averaging around 15mpg, for a mixture of town and dual carriage way driving, I do drive the car quite hard but my wife drives it mainly and very sedately and the mpg still does not increase much at all. Does anyone with a similar car get fuel consumption this low or does it point to a fault with the car, the car runs well and I use Shell Optimax unfortunately I cannot afford to only get 250 miles from a £55 tank of fuel. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Parkers suggests 26 mpg average for one of these but that is standard tune. Was there a manual version made of this car? If you are driving it reasonably hard and with some town driving then you may not get much more than 15 mpg. Have you checked you don't have a petrol leak anywhere just in case it is just seeping away? Who made the chip? Some are a lot better than others and the worst ones just chuck in fuel regardless of whether it is burnt properly or not. You may just be unlucky and have one of these chips.

It might be worth trying it on ordinary unleaded for a couple of complete fills and see whether economy changes. Unless the car has either an octane sensor or has been changed to take advantage of higher octane fuel it probably won't give much improvement in performance and economy (it could even be worse than ordinary 95 ron).

gibbo

a qusetion regarding a possible future starting problem when i turn my ignition over to the III mark on my rover (just before turning the car over) the srs warning light goes on/off etc and a whirring noise(i guess the fuel pump) kicks in and out and its starts first time no problem but sometimes when i go through the same process the whirring noise does not appear then the starter turns over several times before it starts, when its starts,no problem
anybody got any ideas on this, could it be a potential problem about to manifest itself..

yours in anticipation Read more

As we last heard from Gibbo in 2003, I don't somehow think we're going to find out.

Anyone else had a similar problem?

Question Fiesta Problems
Darren Stinchcombe

Hoping someone out there can help me. I have a 97 R plate Fiesta (1.3 Endura Engine) and it has a mystery problem which I can't seem to fix. At low revs, such as slowing up to take a roundabout, the engine just cuts and dies. It starts again straight away, but there's no guarantee that the engine will stay running when you need it to. The problem seems to independant of temperature and can occur when the car is well warmed up. Also happens when you're sitting in neutral too. I've changed just about everything I can think of in there and it's been into get the diagostics checked, but come back with zip. I've scanned a few posts here and seen suggestions for similar issues, but has anyone had any results with this sort of a problem or got any ideas what it can be? The car has been into Fords recently and all the did was replace the clamp on a vacuum pipe claiming they could find nothing wrong with it... Hope someone can help or it's time for me to get a new car!

Thanks in advance :) Read more

Darren Stinchcombe

Hi - thanks for replying. The idle speed control was changed at the beginning of the year. A friend who works for Ford does the servicing and this was his suggestion. The old one was full of crud but it's been replaced fairly recently. Will ask for it to be checked though. Will also check up on the valve clearances... they were checked around the same time, but I'm not sure what they were set to.

Thanks for the info :)

Forum Airbags

There have been several comments on the dangers of airbags, these have appeared in the fire brigade strike thread. It has occurred to me before that they could be dangerous, after all they have an explosive charge to operate them.
It would be interesting to hear comments on the matter. Read more

dammit Dynamic, and I'd just been feeling so pleased that my
diesel car was never going to explode!

No need to panic HF. I'm sure your car would have stopped long before the fuel/air ratio in your fuel tank got as low as it is in the cylinders when they go bang :-)
