Just wondered if anyone else had experienced the following....

Whenever I'm not really looking to change car, but just leafing (or browsing) through AutoTrader/E&M, there seems to be no shortage of 'interesting' choices - good spec, right colour, all within an hour's drive. Usually for less than I paid for my current choice, naturally!

However, the moment I start looking 'for real', these all seem to disappear into thin air - to be replaced by poverty spec, overpriced models in 'hearing-aid beige' - usually at the other end of the country!!

So where do they all go? Maybe it's you guys buying them!!!!?

Back to that search.......

Only used to occur in the first two miles after a cold start, and was really loud. Now it has thankfully gone away. I got the car at 20k miles, 16 months old. iit happened with the oil Reg Vardy had serviced it with, and also with castrol Magnatec when I changed it. It disappeared shortly after I put in 5w-40 fully synthetic, but this could be a coincidence I suppose.

I put it down to a sticky hydraulic tapette which had then freed itself, but recently I finally got around to reading up on my engine - 1.6 16v - and have learned that it does not have hydraulic valve clearances, only the 2 litre does! So although it's only academic, does anyone have any ideas? Read more

I read the recent thread on diesel automatics as I too fancy acquiring one. So what does the team think of the Grand Cherokee. There doesn't seem to be a review in the car by car breakdown. They look reasonable to me, they are well equipped and most of the 2nd hand ones seem to be automatic.

Is a high-pressure spray gun/hose a good way to clean a car or is prolonged and frequent use harmful? Repeated use of a drive in car wash is probably not a good idea. In any case they are not completely thorough are they! A bucket and sponge is OK but I have other things I want to do with my time. So does a high-pressure spray gun/hose offer the ideal alternative? There are some domestic appliances on offer at my local store ? cheap. I am tempted.

Should I or shouldn't I? Any advice gratefully received.

Would I drive my car through a flood? No.

Would I test all my car's window seals to destruction? No.

Would I test my wheels and paintwork to see if I could find a weak spot and remove the weak paint? No.

Would I try to drive water in through any balljoint/drive shaft seals? No.

Would I use a high pressure hose on my car? Silly question.

Forum A sad day?

I got my Cavalier scrapped today to make room for something classier. It's worrying to think how much it cost new and now I had to pay somebody to take it away. I wasn't sorry to see it go - it was heavy, sluggish and so full of rust and filler that it wasn't even magnetic anymore. Anyone else been glad to see the back of a car? Read more

I'm aware the normal locks on these are easy to overcome.

Any advice on the best method of securing up and over door on a normal garage? (Bar removing the door and bricking the thing up!)

Anyone have experience of those methods that have resisted attacks?

My parents bought me a 1987 pug 205XS 1.4 (with the lent-back engine). I have had numerous problems with it overheating and finally the head gasket has gone. I have been quoted between 3 and £400 to get it replaced and the cylinder head skimmed and preassure tested with no guarentee that it won't happen again in a few months time. Is it possible to put a newer upright engine in it on the same engine mounts or would a lot of welding need to be done? Would it be worth my while getting a new engine for it at all or should I just cut my losses and get rid of it? Read more

My 205 1.4 had a complete cooling system flush last year, but less than a year later the garage doing the MoT managed to burst the top hose, apparently because the long pipe to the overflow tank was blocked. Can't say that I have any overheating problem though.

Recently went on a trip to the motorshow in a mates Impreza WRX on a rainy day. He had coated his 'screen with something that enabled the water to almost run off without needing to wipe the 'screen. Great invention but does anyone know more about it - how long it lasts, how much it costs etc and where I can buy it from? Cheers! Read more

Any ideas how you can get rid of tinted windows at least for the drivers and front passengers doors.

Quite scary driving in the dark!! Read more

Are you refering to one of the baseball cap wearing, foglight brigade that used aftermarket stick on tint film to darken the windows previously to you owning the vehicle? If so, I guess some kind of solvent to break down the glue.
If its tinted as standard, depending on the vehicle, and its age - a visit to the scrap yard maybe?
