Question Hunt the washer
Mikey Jay

Not the most exciting posting I'm afraid, but does anyone know where I could obtain a replacement sealing washer and filter gauze for one of those glass bowl filters you used to see on tractors. The washer, made from some kind of rubber is approximately 50mm in diam and sits on the rim of the bowl which is secured underneath by a thumbwheel. The old washer has gone hard and wont seal properly. Any ideas. I bet Dave W has some idea. Kind regards,Mike. Read more

Try Fergiland, address escapes me but a web search will pull it up. Or maybe an agricultural dealer.

Forum VW Deal
Claybuster

My local VW dealer has offered me a brand-new unregistered pre-realigned 2.0 Golf SE Estate in a solid red colour for approx £12500 (£3000) off list, with an approx figure of £5000 and my car (W 2000 Bora 1.6SE 30000ml Flash red exc cond) cost to change. Say's he has extra bonus off VW to shift pre-realigned stuff, but I'm a bit worried about petrol estate residuals, he knows I've got itchy feet about swopping my car while waiting for the Touran to come out. Anybody out there know if this is a good deal or not? on the surface it looks like a good deal, but you never get nothing for nothing in this world! Another VW dealer said "snap his hand off" but then he would wouldn't he?
Any ideas guys?

You may have a long wait.

I had a run of VWs but a few years back I went for a new Golf GTI Turbo and met such a "we're doing YOU a favour" attitude to supplying the car that I left it and went elsewhere - haven't been back since.

Question my omega...
svpworld

:-)

Well come on guys, I haven't seen an omega thread for ..er.. days!

I'm happy to say anyway that I've now covered over 5000 miles since I bought my GLS 2.0 auto in July and still loving every minute! So far (touch wood) nothing at all has gone wrong, faulty, noisy, rattly, squeaky, or oily. Am I just a very lucky guy? She's now covered a majestic 94,000 miles, everyone feels tight and solid, even the winter mornings and frost haven't bothered her warm little heart! (though I do miss heated seats!)

I did do a mobil one change from Kwik fit a few months back and changed the pollen and air filters out of caution, the pollen filter certainly needed it (I can breath now with the windows closed!). I'm sure the exhaust must be on its way soon, as last time I looked on the ramp it did look somewhat corroded. Question, is it worth putting a stainless steel on?

The auto box oil looked clean and red last time I checked it (at 91K) though I think coming up to 100K it should really be replaced out of caution. Or might it cause problems doing this?

Timing belt was done last at 72K, so again i guess around 100K might be a safe time to get it done again, together with the tensioners. I'm a bit worried about getting it done properly though, so any recommendations? I live in Cardiff, Wales.

Well guess that's it.. just wanted to let you all know these mobile hotels aren't all that bad!

Regards
Simon

I just did air and pollen filters, took five minutes and cost about £18.50 from Halfords.

Halfords can supply a stainless steel exhaust for my 3.0 MV6 for £398. Other places (except one in Scotland) were dearer to lesser or greater degrees. My mechanic says he'd fit it for about £40 - £50.

Got Green Stuff pads for front, they apparently don't do Green Stuff rears, but they sold me their brand of Kevlar rears, all low dust. These cost about £72 all in IIRC (P&P etc) ordered direct from importer.

Question brake noise
Mr T J Smith

Hello,

I have a curious problem with my car. When my brakes are warm, after say a sustained brake down a hill, at speeds over 60mph, a droning noise is set up and is damned annoying. there is no vibration, the braking potential doesn't go (i.e. no fade), and it is possible to push through the noise by braking much harder. As an example if approaching a dual carriageway roundabout at 70+ mph (on the continent!), and the brakes are applied gently the noise sets itself up, if however the roundabout is approached and the brakes really anchored on, the noise is much less likely to develop.

The brake pads fitted are mintex 1144 compound, running on solid discs, the manufacturer of which unfortunately escapes me at the moment.

Incidentally this noise is LOUD, and quite annoying. Before all the do-gooders get on to me about it, the brakes do honestly work brilliantly, asides from the noise! Car was recently serviced, brakes looked at, and nothing seemingly wrong!

Help!

Mr Smith

Try stripping down the brakes and cleaning the pads with a
paint brush,

Be careful not to inhale any of the dust. Some pads still contain asbestos.

Just got back from the Jennings Ford Rapid Fit at Durham.

I went there to get a long running problem with my off-centre steering wheel fixed. They re-aligned the front wheels and have fixed my steering! :) :) :)

What did they charge?............. Nothing!

I asked how much and he said don't worry just take the car away! :)

Fantastic service from really helpful staff and I would recommend them to anyone in the area. Guess where I'll be going when the car needs new tyres... Read more

Blue {P}

No, I bought the car as an import from Trade-Sales.

I had problems with uneve tyre wear and took it to ATS for alignment, who found it to be out of alignment from the factory. They charged me £20 to fix it, and the wheel was off-center from then on, depsite no less than 4 repeat visits!

I took it to RapidFit who looked and said that it was now only a little bit out, but suggested that I could leave it for a couple of months and see how it goes.

I did that but then got sick of it and went back to pay them to fix it properly. This time I got a different bloke, who decided to do it for free! :)

Having said that, perhaps he thought that it was them who had done it incorrectly in the first place, and not ATS, I did mention ATS but only to the first bloke I saw. Never mind, it's definately secured my repeat custom so even if they have let me off with less than £20, they will more than make that back on the tyres that I'kk be buying from them, and jusging by the heavy front wear at just 5,000 miles I think I'll be a regular!

Test drove a 94 M 2.0 SXi yesterday.
V. clean body.
All the gadgets worked.
Had history.
Price was right.

Although I did notice a lot of noise coming from the rear near-side wheel when drove at cruising speed.
I assume this is the wheel bearing as the car had 100k on the clock.

Did not deter me from leaving a deposit as I assume this is not too onerous a task.
Can anyone confirm this.
Also how much would I expect to pay for a bearing.
Don't mind carrying out the repair myself (with Haynes manual!)

Toad, of Toad Hall.

Anyone else get caught?

I left at 7am and did 14 miles in 2 hours.

Normally takes me about 15 minutes.

*Surely* one or two lanes could be left open...

Given their role in dealing with serious motoring related accidents and other emergency situations do you support the Fire Brigade in their strike for a 40% pay rise ?

My opinion (for what it's worth) is that they do a very good job but aren't any more professional than nurses, policemen and all sorts of other people who have similar (and sometimes less favourable) working conditions and don't earn £30k pa. Read more

How many

of the contributors here would enter a burning building to rescue
someone they weren't related to, I wonder? Apart from KB, that
is.

>>

Very few of us would have the courage to do that,I would guess. A lot of people will argue that this is not the norm in a firefighter's job, and I agree - as KB said, there are many many other aspects of the job, many of which are a total waste of the firefighters' time. The fact remains that they MAY, on any given day, have to enter the burning building, and their job description tells them that this is the case. In the same way, the police, paramedics, etc etc etc don't ALWAYS face danger, but they know every day of their working lives that they might just be called out to do so.

I also agree that anyone entering these professions knows the risks, and the wages, before they join.

Without wishing to reiterate, all I want to say here is that they're never going to get the 40%, whether or not they deserve it, and that by striking they are alienating so many people who probably would have been supportive of them getting an above-average payrise before all this happened.

I think the general public's view stems from the fact that we are all terrified that we will be the ones stuck in the burning house, trapped in the car, whatever, whilst this is all going on. A valid fear, I think, but it does seem tantamount to blackmail that the striking firefighters want to hold us to ransom to achieve their end.

All that said, I still have huge sympathy with KB and his like, and I still think all this must be absolutely gutting for him to read. Imagine giving the best part of your life to a job as he's described above, and then reading this thread.

I sincerely hope there are many more like him in our fire service today.

Forum Car Claim
Mark (RLBS)

As you may recall, one of our cars got thumped by a Turkish Artic a little while ago.

I just wanted to write about the outstanding service we got.

Firstly the accident. The Police turned up, sorted out the traffic mess, made sure all details were exchanged both ways and left. Polite, efficient and welcome.

Rang Norwich Union, no claim form required, all details taken over the phone by a very pleasant young lady.

About 2 hours later Carbody of Banbury turned up, took away the damaged car and left a replacement. They even managed to dig out an automatic for us.

The car was repaired when they said it would be, cleaned inside and out, and polished. I cannot even find where the damage was, other than conspicuously clean/new pieces of plastic & chrome trim. As far as I can see it is perfect, and for sure if I was buying the car I wouldn't find the repair.

Norwich Union Overseas Claims later rang and gave me all the details I needed for the foreign insurer and advice on how to deal with them.

All in all, given that I would rather not have had the accident in the first place, Norwich Union and Carbody of Banbury could not possibly have been more efficient, polite or helpful.

Highly recommended, the pair of them.

Presumably everyone knows how to contact Norwich Union and Carbody are;

Mark - You're right about the sub-contracting bit, people up here put their Mercs in for repair at the local Merc dealers and they send them to the place where I got my Fiesta fixed, and add a little bit to the cost for the privelege! :)

Of course it was unusual for them to deal with a Fiesta, their usual trade is almost all Mercs... I just went directly to them...
