Clutch clunk and flashing lights! Pug206 - Little Villan
Hey all,

I am having problems with my Pug 206 clutch (as some members may know!).

Here is the prob:

Sometimes when using clutch pedal I hear a 'clunk' sound and the pedal has no resistance and goes to the floor. I cant change gear when pedal does this. (Although if i bring back up again and try it works!?)

I have taken to Peugeot, who found no fault and have taken to 4 other mechanics - they say same thing (it never happens when with them!).

I have got some response from (ahem . . ) another forum (cheeky!) www.parkers.co.uk/advice/message_board/topic.asp?T...7

But so far no luck! :o(

Another additional fault has also started, where the handbrake light intermittantly and randomly flashes (possibly related?).

Has anyone got any ideas? PLEASE HELP! (and remember I am a novice, so not too technical please!)

I am stuck for answers and worried whenever I use clutch pedal.

Thanx

Little Villan

Assumming a cable clutch (I am not a pug guy ) then the automatic adjuster is failing thus the random no clutch. No the hand brake light is not connected but the micoswitch under the hand brake has come loose.

I would tend to agree with Peter D about the auto adjuster. Similar thing used to happen on the Mrk3 Escorts.

Firstly thanks for replies guys!

I have noticed that when this occurs, although the clutch pedal is to the floor, the clutch remains engaged, and I cant change gear. This occasionally 'fixes' itself if I lift the clutch and bring it back down again. Otherwise I 'gracefully'(!) stall.

Does this also point to a dodgy auto adjuster ?

BTW: "Assumming a cable clutch"-as i said before I dont know too much, so I cant confirm this. BUT I have heard mechanics mention auto adjusting . . . when talking about my car.

Any suggestion welcome!

Thanx,

It sounds very much so.

The "auto adjusting" the mechanic mentioned is a rachet type adjustment, normally made from plastic or nylon. When the cable stretches a bit, the rachet takes up the free play. I suspect the rachet (if it has one fitted) has worn (common fault with mk3 Escorts) Any Pug experts care to confirm?

I saw a similiar problem on my mums old car ( it was a polo ) , changed the clutch cable and everything was fine.

As the Peugeot 306 has a cable-operated clutch with an auto-adjuster, it is likely the 206 is similar (though I admit that's not conclusive proof).

Peugeot like to sell spares as kits including lots of connectors and brackets (possibly because they can charge more and make a greater profit). I don't know, and hope someone else can tell me, whether the clutch cable kit includes the auto-adjuster mechanism.

Presumably cos's Polo was cured because the garage replaced the adjuster and cable at the same time.

My 306's clutch pedal occasionally (perhaps every couple of months or so) gives a little lurch when you press it. It's never failed like Little Villan's, but it makes me wonder if the adjuster is a bit iffy. So I'm interested in any answers.

"Lurch" - you press the pedal, feeling the pressure of the clutch, and suddenly the pedal drops by a fraction of an inch before the pressure comes back and everything continues normally.

Hi Little Villan,
You will need to replace your clutch cable mate. The one you and I have on the 206 has an automatic cable adjuster built into it just inside the rubber sheath where the cable comes through the bulkhead into the engine compartment. You will not see it but it's there and is failing, change it. These are around £35 from a dealer but you can get a copy from a motor parts shop for around half the price.

Hi Little Villan,

However, it may be handy for others with the same problem.

Hi Spyder,

After much faffing about - thats what I finally ended up doing - it did the trick (well - so far so good)! - changing it is a ***bit*** of a @&*^&* though!

Thanks for the response anyway - feel bad for not coming back and posting the solution!
