I have been offered 6 month old zafira with a factory fitted towbar, the price list states that heavy duty rear springs are included. Will the ride be much harsher than a standard sprung model when not towing. Read more

Now its time to change the cambelt; on a 309 1.4i, k reg. Best quotes around £80: is this fair? Halfords Southport say £87 before AA discount.
I've read about tensioners. What parts are Halfords likely to recommend changing?
And in the Car by Car breakdown HJ recommends changing 'cambelt end seals.' What are these and are they important?
The car's done 75k. Cheers Read more
This sounds like a fair price. A place in Leicester will do my Rover Vitesse and Metro for £90 & £80 respectively. Rover dealer prices £147 & £132 resp.
As I understand it, its plastic tensioner pulleys that need changing with the belt.
I am not totally familiar with diesel injection pump adjustments ie, automotive type but, to get my 2Lt Toyota Masterace through it's MOT, the local specialists adjusted the pump to bring the emission reading down to the required level of 3. In fact, the average recorded level, on my engine, is now 1.36. ( Out of interest, is this 1.36 "particles" per million ?)
I now have a noticeable reduction in power. The air filter has been changed recently, the injectors have been cleaned and I change the engine oil at every 3000 miles. Could anyone kindly advise if the loss of power is a penalty which I must pay for the low emission reading or, is there some adjustments which I can make, without jeopardising the emission figure, to give me a bit more power ? Any comments/advise would be much appreciated
Thanks. Read more
I think the only adjustment you can make is to turn the screw up again. As it probably has a old type IDI engine, the only way to cleanit up is to reduce the fuel, hence reduced power, hence reduced emmisions. It may be that the injectors are worn and are giving a poor pattern, and the only way to bring it in line is to reduce the overall fueling. It's a standard thing done to imports to get them through the MOT/SVA.
Having just replaced the front flexibles I have bled the whole system using a pressure bleeder. The pedal feel remains a little soft/spongy, particularly noticeable when servo operating. Stops ok and straight, but just does not feel right.
Discs all seem flat, pads new on rear, back flexibles all good.
Are they difficult to bleed, or should I just have another go? The pressure bleeder did not seem to operate veryt effectively on the rear, does the limiting valve have some effect?
I have not had problems using pressure bleeder in the past (on diverse cars). But my experience on Golf is limited.

After 100 miles the brakes certainly have a better feel (it is not just that I have got used to them, since SWMBO has been using it).
One trade tip I have acquired on the way is that using a ratchet strap on the rear compensator valve (to ensure that max pressure is passed thro) is a preferred way of bleeding the rears.
I will give it a few hundred miles and rebleed using this tip and report back then.
ta for help.

My \'97 Mondeo\'s central locking has suddenly decided not to double lock, (ie with indicators flashing) either with the key or the remote. Any ideas please? Read more
same thing as just happened to my mondeo, no double locking, no alarm. i have remade the orange wire to the three wire connection in the drivers footwell as described in \'mirez.co.uk\' mondeo alarm pages. still no joy. as your trouble started so long ago did you found the cause of your trouble. my mondeo is not remote locking (key only)
Does anybody have access to the relevant data for the torque setting for the sump plug on a 1995/1996 1.3 Nissan Micra.
Cheers. Read more
I have to agree with Mike. We reduced the hexagon size (and hence the spanner size) of sump plugs on Perkins' engines about 20 years ago following thread-stripping by muscle-bound service mechanics. It is not always the D-I-Y man who misjudges tightening torques.
I had a look at a Mondeo that had just had its wishbones replaced. I know it is common practice to replace
the bolt under the gearbox from the bottom instead of the top.
On this particular car the bolt was just touching the gearbox
infact the knocking noise caused by this was my reason for investigation. I feel it could easily have damaged the gear box if it had been left. This job was carried out by a well known fast fit center (not nit wit fitters) but they can be found at the front of the phone directory. If you own a Mondeo I should pop your head under and have a look. This car had done high mileage so I suspect the mountings were a bit softer than usual.

Dear all
I am relatively new to this 'place' and assume what I am about to ask, has been thrashed over a thousand times in the past - notwithstanding that, I wish to take on some sort of breakdown service.
For roadside, relay and homestart for 2 people, the AA is quoting £129, which sounds a bit steep to me. I will not join the RAC as long as PR man and self-confessed, non-car owner, John Simpson is working there.
What about CSMA or Green Flag, blah, blah?
Personal recommendations are so much better - look forward to reading your replies.

Hi, i have been a member of Autoaid Breakdown for the last few years. (08003284439) Have used it once in that time and had a very quick response. Had to be towed home about 4-miles. You have to pay the breakdown company and get a receipt and then claim back from Autoaid. Received payment within a week. Not bad for £43 which covers you personnly and also my wife.

The 1986 polo has even more faults:-
Corner of the cylinder head gasket leaks oil over the alternator, oil gets onto brushes and creates 'grinding paste' wears through the slips rings in no time.
Oil pump gear bears onto flats on the crankshaft. Eventually these flats wear away. No more oil pressure - you know the rest!
Interesting theory on the wiper. Sounds good.
