I presume you have checked out this year's J D Power survey (in June What Car? or on their website).

Am considering buying Astra 1.8SXi.Road reports to date all seem favourable. However on recent short test drive we found both seats to be quite hard. even uncomfortable.I know it is supposed to be "sporty"But I would welcome comment from anyone on a"long drive" experience.I don't think different seats are an option.

We've had an Astra 1.8SXi since January. Absolutely no complaints about the seats - they are at least as good as my BMW. As for long trips - within a week of purchase we did a journey up the M5/M6 of about 230 miles, and found the seats absolutely fine. I find the extendable front edge of the cushion great, although my wife tends to push it back when she drives.

Dizzy is right though, these things can be subjective, given the differences in peoples build, height and weight. We're both tall and light if that helps!

By the way, the rest of the car is fine too.

Cavity sealing wax has leaked out of the drain holes on my car's tailgate and run over the paintwork, unpainted plastic bumper, and painted plastic fairing below. Any suggestions on what to use to remove it please?

BTW, I recently tried removing sticky label residue from the dashboard using isopropyl alcohol since I thought it wouldn't attack plastic. Wrong!

Anyhoo, well done on the new site.

Close Andy - Mk3! I'll try the white spirit as you both suggest. Thanks also for the swarfega tip.

Has anybody replaced the cambelt on a 2.1 TD Peugoet 406. If so, is the only way to get the top cam belt cover off, to take the upper right engine mounting off? Thanks Reggie Read more

JohnD

Hi Reggie - I've done the 2.1 Xantia TD timing belt which is the same engine as the 406. Take the weight of the engine on a suitable piece of wood placed on a jack under the sump. Remove the four bolts from the support on the top of the cambelt cover together with the centre bolt from the rubber engine mount. Also take out the three bolts from the lower part of the mounting attached to the inner wing. Haynes advises taking off the starter motor to enable the flywheel to be locked since unlike the smaller XUD's it's not possible to reach the hole in the flywheel housing. I ignored that, and instead, marked the position of the crankshaft with a drop of white paint after setting up the other timing positions. I find it works just as well. All the best!

My 91 tipo turbo diesel wouldn't start today after running for about 3 hrs I came home for a while and when I went to leave it just spluttered for a while with no power then died.
Have checked for fuel which is present engine side but there seems to be no suction from the fuel pump. I disconnectd the fuel hose which runs from the filter to the pump and turned engine but no suction.
I tested the fuel solenoid and that is working fine even removed it just in case but still no fuel into the injectors.
Has anyone got any ideas as I would rather try repair my self as it will cost £600 for a new pump to be fitted but I can do it myself just need to know if anyone has any ideas about the cause and maybe a solution. Read more

needhelp

Thanx for your help have since tried this but to no avail but did source the problem at the same time. The fuel pipe from filter to pump had a tiny little split in it and so was preventing suction. The suction was pulling through the hole as it was easier to draw through than pull the diesel from the tank.
Anyway have since replaced all hosing just in case and have had NO problems since.

Question Diesel MPG
Matt

I own a 1996 306 diesel and although I drive it hard, am not impressed by the fuel consumption compared to friends of mine who make statements such as "I can get 700 miles from a tank in my one etc etc..." I rarely get much more than 400-450 miles from my tank but reckon I should get more. What can I do to improve fuel economy without changing driving techniques? Read more

The Watcher

Surely if you 'thrash' a diesel and petrol engine car, the diesel will still be the most economical of the two?

I've just had a 2 year service carried out at a Audi dealer.
Since then when i cold start the engine i get a half second increase in revs to around 1200rpm. It never did this before, the only difference there is from my previous service (this time last year) is the use of fully synthetic oil as opposed to semi , any ideas before i contact the dealer? , he's a inconvenient 15 mile away.

Thanks for your comments, it's all very strange but the car now starts as it use to, up to about 1k then quickly down to around 850rpm

My 6 month old Lupo has to serve as a mobile office, complete with canteen facilities. Unfortunately the light grey interior trim is showing signs of careless tea drinking and one particularly fizzy coke can.

Can anyone recommend a good cleaner, dry if possible, that will make it look less like the Duckworths living room? Read more

Tom,

I quite like the 'foaming' cleaner made by Comma. Follow the instructions on the can and use with an upholstery sponge - it seems to lift out all kinds of stain.

Richard Turpin

In fact I have now done it. Richard's suggestion of clamping the pipes, all 3, resulted in the pedal being hard. Releasing each in turn showed the air to be in the front 2 slave cylinders. Bleeding each in turn by stamping on the pedal has worked. Many thanks to all.
