The BBC site is carrying a 'speak your mind' thingy on road tolls. The idea seems to be going down very well. NOT.

MBH ,

You *are* up late.

Don't forget that the VAT is also applied on the duty, which as you know, means we are paying tax on a tax.

Remember when we were told that VAT was going up by 2.5%?

An increase from 15% VAT to 17.5% is actually a rise of 16.666%

Aren't numbers fun?

Has any one had such a thing as a puncture repair recently? I genuinely cannot remember the last time I tried without being flogged a new tyre because the punctured item was "damaged beyond repair". How do I know it's
"damaged beyond repair" or yet again, am I being ripped off (as I suspect).

Does anyone publish guidelines for the consumer regarding tyre repairs/safety? Read more

Further to the other threads about this petrol, I wonder if there was ever a definitive answer to the stories that Optimax had been withdrawn on the continent?

Were these just rumours or is there still a genuine concern over the long tem use of this petrol? I've put it into my 9-5 Aero for the last 20k and benefited from increased mpg but don't want a nasty shock in the future.

I would really like to know about this Optimax business once and for all - perhaps the great HJ can shed some light?

I do doubt that it can be baned in europe, when Audi have just launched an engine (I think its called FSI in the A2) thats optimised (pun not intended!) for Optimax!

I use the stuff irreguarly but would use it all the time if it had not recently shot up in price (now at least 79.9 here in west dorset)...

I get really annoyed this time of year when the motoring press start laying in to caravanners. Surely the motoring press is for all the motoring public not just the select few. DT Saturday section is great and always includes a broad range of articles on cars and bikes so why ostracise caravanners - there are bad drivers and annoying vehicles of every description but we should stick together as motorists - witness the discussion on Motorway tolls......... coming to a cinema near you soon. The sooner we all pull together ( no pun intended ) perhaps we become a stronger body.

I ride bikes, drive cars and pull a caravan occasionally, I consider myself a motorist not a car driver, biker or caravanner and respect all these 'groups' when doing one of the other.

Cheers :-)

Most replies what I imagined but serious, considered replies have preached tolerance of other road users whatever they be driving / riding. I am not sure if banning will work or we'd be banning all sorts of vehicles just because they don't comply with the performance characteristics demanded by a few at certain times of the day although I note that JCBs are banned at peak hours on our local dual carriageway.

I agree with training, MOTs etc and ask for tolerance and consideration for all.

Thanks,

Pete

Had a woman following me this morning in the outside lane on the A23 northbound. Usual A23 rush hour traffic. I noticed that she kept drifting over to the centre lane, probably to the consternation of the Transit driver in the middle lane. I then noticed that she was READING.

Probably not a map, because she was turning pages over. Directions, or notes for her meeting? I don't know. Probably a business type because she had a suit hanging by the rear door. I moved over and let her pass, thinking it the safest thing to do.

Reading? At 80 mph? Read more

OK, you just stay on your side of Offa's Dyke. Meanwhile I'll stay on the sunny side and carry on enjoying some of the best driving on some of the quietest roads south of the Tweed.

Cost (time) to remove, have sent away for checking and repair, return and refit?

(I know the send away for checking etc could be any price but someone might deal in such things and know what goes and gets charged)

Any ideas appreciated Read more

Thanks AM for those costs and timings

Maybe!

Several people, both here and in email, have wondered why I haven't been sticking my puglike nose into The Back Room during the past few days.

Don't for one minute think that it's because I haven't been watching! But (touching wood) everyone has been so well-behaved... and at the same time no-one has said anything much worthy of comment from on high. I have, however, been very busy with my elves working on Other Stuff.

Oddly, the one time when I might have been some use was when Bill Doodson was unable to post one of his contributions (though, curiously, he could post others. Hmmmm....); one or two suggested that he might send them to me by email, but I didn't hear from him, and so thought it can't have been that important.

Finally, before I dive back under the bonnet, it's very nice to see you again, Carole A. Read more

Sometimes the only way I can get to contribute, when it's not an emergency, is from the laptop at home, hence the different address.

Low Sulphur diesel is causing a higher incidence of fuel pump failure due to the decrease in lubricant.

Todd is absolutely correct here. When ULSD was first introduced in Sweden, there were indeed problem with injection pumps and so on. It was proved that this was due either to the removal of suphur itself, and/or the extra processes done to remove the sulphur. Therefore a lubricant package was added, and this was all sorted well before Greenergy imported the first lots of City Diesel into UK. That is why I tend to use Sainsbury's.

Just to start a tangential thread, remember them MBRM?

OEH (Our Exalted Host) HJ frequently mentions using petrol with good detergent packages, twice in Saturdays DT column alone. Shell and Texaco being mentioned by name. I'm sure its generally good advice but Shell and Texaco are like rocking horse effluent round our way.

So my question is this. Where is this info on which fuels have a high detergency factor? (english? spelling?)

Is there some report other than eg shell website? Where does say Esso, which is easier for me to buy, stack up in all this.

The automatic dipping rear view mirror [interior] in my Scorpio estate seems to be losing a sort of film over the lens.
The cost of a new one from Ford is about £115 plus VAT.
Any knowledge of a good second hand one would be greatfully appreciated.

You can buy new mirrors that simply stick on over the old one, try Halfords for a start.

Renewal for the bike plopped on the door mat this morning. 472.00 fully comp.

Decided to phone around. Got a quote for a Honda CBR1000 covered for business use £100.00 excess, including legal and breakdown cover - £206.00 fully comp. As a side issue I asked which company offered this remarkable price. Guess what ? The same one that offered me the £472.00 renewal. To quote my sparring partner (Alwyn) "Go Figure" Read more

Excellent - thanks Alwyn and others.

I am actually with CN at the moment - 2nd year after the 'Independent Icons' debacle last year. Seems OK policy but not as cheap as you were quoted - 42yo rider with max NCD & deep rural postcode. But mine was by phone - I'll try online and see what happens...Thanks again. Neil
