punctures - Paul F.
Has any one had such a thing as a puncture repair recently? I genuinely cannot remember the last time I tried without being flogged a new tyre because the punctured item was "damaged beyond repair". How do I know it's
"damaged beyond repair" or yet again, am I being ripped off (as I suspect).

Does anyone publish guidelines for the consumer regarding tyre repairs/safety?
Re: punctures - Steve G
All depends where the puncture is. If its in the centre of the tread then it will be OK.
Had a repair done recently for just £5.00.
Re: punctures - Simon Butterworth
Formula one in Northampton charge £10, watched repair done, damage caused by nail/screw in centre of tread. After getting tyre off wheel nail removed with pincers and hole drilled out to make regular. Whole area inside casing cleaned/roughened and cleaned again. Area treated with vulcanising solution in same as way as preparing a push bike inner for patching. Rubber "mushroom" threaded stalk first into hole from inside and excess stalk cut off. More vulcanising solution round feathered edge of mushroom. Tyre refitted to revalved rim (worrying bit was that I had to point out that tyre had inner and outer faces marked on sidewalls!) balanced and returned to grateful owner .

Absolutely brilliant!

It is not possible at modern wage rates, taxes, rent, utility bills, etc - one would have thought.

Where do you go for your next tyres?
Re: punctures - Simon Butterworth
This place has had my custom since it opened.
Re: punctures - Roger k.
....and of course Sir, with that nice new tyre you will want it balanced and the front wheel alignment checked.....etc!
Re: punctures - steve
I too have had a successful repair - more like £12 I think but still worth it. It was a nail right in the centre of the tread. It has been said before on this forum - go to a local respected independent not one of the national chains.
For those in Cirencester area I can fully recommend Cirencester Tyres and Exhausts. Good value and good service.

Had some wheel balancing done at Kwik Fit last w/end. Left the car there as there was a queue. When I returned the spare was missing. Nobody knew anything about it. I have no proof, but I know what happened. I was only charged £5 for the balance. Great.
Re: punctures - Lee H
Been lucky I guess, but have had two punture repairs in the last year, one at the Just-Tyres and the other at Kwik Fit. Can't complain at the service provided by either, and KF were even friendly enough to check the anti-freeze in the radiator.

ATS offered me (well, my wife) insurance against punctures or failure that covered the life of the tyre last year. A month ago this tyre had a slow puncture. Off to ATS we went, to find a thorn in the shoulder of the tyre. Cost of insurance: £3.50. Cost of "major repair": £20. No quibble, tyre fixed. A result, I think.

Re: punctures - mybrainhurts
If the quick fit centre says the puncture is too close to the edge for a safe repair, a specialist repairer might still be able to vulcanise the thing properly.

Costs about £20 but, if the tyre's nearly new and VERY expensive, it's worth it.

I know, I had a spate of 5 punctures in 6 months recently. My local qf told me where to find the specialist. Seems they used to send repairs out, but their cut made the cost too high.

Yes, there are regulations regarding the repair of punctures. Probably available on the net, but any decent tyre shop should have them on the wall.

The rules restrict where a repair can be made (essentially only the tread area, not the side walls), and the maximum repairable size of defect that may be repaired. This subject was aired here a while back, and a search may find it.

You also need to consider safety, even if the puncture is nominally repairable - especially on high performance cars.

My local ATS certainly displays a poster outlining the rules, and they've fixed punctures for me - reasonable price and no problems. Didn't try to sell me a new tyre either.

Re: punctures - Brill
I had a repair at QF recently, put it on the car only to see it go flat again ... they had put the rubber plug in ... but hadn't vulcanised it!

Can say from bitter experience that the only while u wait outfit that I have had satisfaction from has been ATS. Last visit a few weeks ago for back box on Metro. Cheapest price of all and tyres checked all round and reported as AOK.
Re: punctures - Dave Y
Had a nail in a tyre recently remarkably close to the shoulder but local garage repaired it no problem - £10 I think. Been fine since.
