Hello Backroomers.
My previous thread on this question having died, I am still looking for a source of wiring diagrams for modern cars, either by post or on-line, where the dealer or Haynes cannot or will not help. I will pay for the service, I am not asking for freebies.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks. Read more

Dear John,
I have recently purchased a new Rover 25 Impression 1.4. As I normally run with the blower on, it was not until I turned it off that I heard a slight knocking coming from the engine. Is this usual for the K Series engine?

Is the noise there at all times? Or is it a tapping noise (engine hot and idling) that can be heard inside the car, which sounds remarkably like small end/piston noise?

If it is, it will be the Charcoal canister purge valve pulsing; the mechanical noise of this is transmitted into the passenger compartment via the bulkhead and sounds very alarming.

A simple fix by means of 'bush modification' and all will be well. All MGR Dealers 'should' be aware of this fix.

Please let me know the outcome..

Vintage Sports Car Club race meeting at Silverstone tomorrow. Should be good if the weather stays dry. If you haven't been to one of these events before, I can't recommend it enough. You might think 'old cars racing - slow and boring' but you'd be very far wrong. I believe there is a race for 50s sports-racers (D type Jaguars, Lister-Jaguars etc) but I could be wrong about that. Gentlemen, *please*! Don't forget that Miss Flather (see "My Yaris is Coming") will be warming up her Chilli Red Yaris for the first time today (albeit not a Verso). Whatever your feelings, that must be better than a Chilly Red Elbow!

Enjoy the ride , Miss F.

Some advice, please?

SWMBO's VW Golf (1986, 1300C Mk2 petrol, 100,000 miles) has lain on our drive since the head gasket went a year ago. We've owned it since new, no rust (no surprise with a VW), but it's not the most desirable of Golf variants. As they are supposed to be ideal bangers to run, do you think it would be worth something to somebody, or is it just a scrapper? Oh, and it has nearly new (good make) exhaust, oil pump, etc... Try advertising in ebay, you won't believe some of the crap that is for sale there!

My car is constantly chucking out a cloud of dark grey/black smoke from the exhaust. The fuel and air filters have been changed recently and it doesn't use oil or water so I assume this is due to overfuelling???
Any ideas as to how I could adjust this myself???? Read more

Take the car to your local Bosch Diesel Specialist, accept no imitations.

They will have all the info & know-how to best deal with this.

Or live with it, knowing you are choking the planet ;-)

I followed a well-smoky Focus TDi off the motorway today at 30 (Exeter) so much so I had to select air-recirc!! Darn Fords!

I just came across a website with a very blatant and descriptive name which describes the nature of its products most obviously. It sells products associated with "correcting" vehicle mileage indicators (odometers) and also sells portable kits to enable you to open/bypass security devices (alarms, locks etc) on prestigious cars using their equipment.

Here is a short piece of decriptive text.............

"Mileage Correction At Its Best
We have been using digital mileage correction equipment now for over 10 years and can now offer a product worth purchasing, this product is a simple to use hand held device which allows you to alter the odometer reading on any vehicle, it can also be upgraded via your e-mail. No more bulky laptops no more adjusting the speed on the laptop because it wont talk with the car and no more poor quality cables.
12-HOUR-HELPLINE----9am-9pm--7days a week

Second To None
This was not an easy industry in the beginning and required a fair bit of skill in the early years, however with the products we can offer you today the job couldn't be simpler, and with unlimited phone help you will be able to work stress free and continue to make easy money."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lots of issues here. Not least of which is the topic, often raised here, the gist of which usually goes as follows........"Why are people stupid enough to buy new cars?" It usually goes on to to berate new car buyers, suggesting that they have more money than sense etc.........

I suggest that the above is just one of the reasons why. There are others, but this is at the root of the reason - that you know a new car hasn't been thrashed, abused, clocked, ringed, written off/repaired, stolen and re-registered........the list goes on.

Having said that, I've had plenty used cars and am well aware that it is perfectly possible to buy genuine used cars - and I've had dozens of them(both good and not so good).

Apart from that issue, I'd be interested to know what others think of the ready availability of equipment such as this, on sale to the public without restriction.

The sale of detectors related to Gatso's and other speed detection devices is one thing. The sale of equipment enabling anyone to "adjust" the mileage of your prospective purchase or equipment enabling someone to clone your key fob is another. Both speed related devices and the kit to which I refer can be regarded as having legitimate use. The former may just possibly be justified as an accepltable reminder of the presence of speed detection devices (although I prefer the cheaper option of a tempered right foot). However, I am unsettled to see just how easy it is to buy the means to 'clock' used cars or steal my car.

I take your point about big brother, Ian, but I don't think it would be a problem if it was the manufacturers who ran the system. Mobile phone companies, GPS companies, credit card companies etc. already have a pretty clear idea what we're doing, and where we are. In UK of course the problem would be the lack of bill of rights, and open government legislation. In *modern* democracies, though...

I have a 98 306D. Over the last few weeks I have had the following problems. The horn is not working properly, emits a feeble squeak. The water washers have stopped working and the radio only works on the stalk which means I can search through for channels and change volume. I would like to have a look at the parts before going to a garage but nothing seems accessible. Is this intentional or can anyone advise please? Read more

In defence of the police I suppose but this incident made me realise that they couldn't pay me enough to do the job.

There was an accident on the A303 near Thruxton yesterday at about 5:30 am. A lorry crashed through the crash barriers, partially blocking both carraigeways. The "Police Accident" signs were out for about a mile before the scene on the eastbound. Most of us pulled to the inside lane and carried on slowly. There was so little traffic that it didn't make a lot of difference anyway.

The driver of a sliver BMW 3 series was obviously too important to slow down so he carried on in the outside line to within about 50 yards of the crash site, and then had to swerve to avoid a policeman who was trying to sort out the mess.

Hope they got his number, but would you risk life and limb to do that job? Read more

Is it actually Jack Union then?

My "fan club" can't have it all ways: not liking my name, choosing alternatives, complaining when I adopt them, and then complaining even more that I'm too shy and retiring and "hiding" when a leave a space for them to fill in their latest terms of endearment.
