Adam Going (Tune-Up Ltd)

Hi All,

Currently have a problem with a Volvo V40 2.0 Turbo (4cyl, 16v). Intermittent starting problem, with engine sometimes cranking unevenly then starting on 2, then 3, then 4 cylinders. Management light comes on with code for crank sensor. Car is 9 months / 7k old still under warranty.

Dealer has had car three times and now replaced the crank sensor, but my feeling is that the problem is more valve related, possible with hydraulic lifters jacking / sticking. Dealer insists on using Duckhams QXR, and until warranty is out we have to go along with that. Does anyone have any experience of a similar problem with this engine, and any specific recommendations on oil for this engine, bearing in mind it is a turbo and driven hard most of the time ? My personal prefference is to go to Vauxhall's Prestige 10/40 Semi-Syn (a Texaco product, I beleive) as I use it extensively with good results.

Have heard that there was a TSB on valve lifters on Volvo 940. Anyone know about that ?

Thanks in anticipation, Adam Read more

Yes its David Davies of Tune-Up Raglan as you thought. Looking forward to hearing the cause of your Volvo problem. It seems to be quite common and I haven't yet heard a proper explanation of it.

Are there any Shogun Pinin or Pajero (3 door) owners out there that can give me some good advice, thinking of buying one soon - Apparently, they are bit uncomfortable to drive - is this the case?.... diesel or petrol whats best -also I know about the mass import of pajero's stories can you tell me where I can get a genuine one and a good bargain for any of these vehicles ? I live in London/Kent/Sussex area.
Thanking you in advance for all the advice Read more

Hello Tracy

I certainly think the advice from KB is good. I bought a new Jimny for my wife. She has horses and large dog with all the usual mud, muck straw etc. She also does quite short journeys unfortunately. I find the Jimny excellent. Easy to powerwash and clean inside. Ours does approx 40 mpg and is very nippy.

We have the soft top model. We find the rear door fiddly to open for the dog etc., and you might wish to look at the hard-top version purely for this. On the other hand, soft-top excellent in summer, just fold back front roof piece for instant aircon!

We also live in Somerset. Try RW Humphries at Bath for good s/h or new deal on Jimnys

Jeremy

i am trying to sell my in-car minidisc player, but i dont know how much to charge, i bought it for £450 four months ago, so i was wondering about £300 what does anybody think.

p.s
the reason i am selling it is because its too powerful for the car (the doors start to shake when the radios on) Read more

Yes, go for it.
When you turn up here called "golfs are cool," we'll be very happy.

I am told it is technically possible to incorporate circuitry into cars that will inhibit the use of mobile phones inside a car that has the ignition switched on.

Now I know that this will prevent their use by a passenger. But isn?t this a small price to pay to stop the P****S who use their cars as a mobile office at 90mph in the outside lane of the motorway.

IMHO mobile phone use whilst driving is indefensible and should be prevented by whatever means are available ? including severe penalties for anyone caught.

It should become as socially unacceptable as drunken driving. Read more

I've had an idea - why not make the stereo the phone as well?

The pop off front when ur not in the car and its your mobile phone - put it in the stereo and its a hands free car kit and stereo all in one.

Eliminates problem of
-on phone while drivin
-havin to carry phone and stereo
-forking out for a seperate hands free kit
-voice would come through stereo speakers

im gonna sell the idea to sony and make millions. If anyone steals it off me ill train to be a traffic cop instead and work in the speed limit enforcement department.

An accident was reported on the Welsh news today about a HGV that piled into a
broken down Army Land Rover (!). The Landie was so much scrap iron on the hard shoulder -squaddies had, sensibly, evacuated when it broke down otherwise they would have been mincemeat. The lorry then took off over, an apparantly, unprotected emabankment onto a main -line railway narrowly missing an express train and goods train. Another freaky accident ? Read more

I understand that this type of accident, along with vehcles trying to "jump" level crossing barriers, is on the increase.

Back in August a bread van ended up on the West Coast Main Line at Bletchley after "swerving to avoid a fox". Honest.

Without wanting to provoke another "Gary Hart is Innocent Campaign" thread, I can confirm that the standards of fencing (sufficient to stop a vehicle) around railway lines have not declined in in recent years.

So what's changed? Driving standards?

I'm looking at possibly a vr6 corrado or a nissan 200sx, and would appreciate comment - good and bad - it's hard earned cash that's at stake. What the "best buy" bearing in mind cost to run?
thanks in advance Read more

Lots of info, though i couldn't find anything on the fuelling fault. If the fault can be cured by remapping then great, but I suspect that HJ's industry contacts would have known about it.

Tomo,

Was it you that e-mailed the Steve Wright show on R2 on Thursday afternoon professing your undying love for Steve's female assistant?

Come clean - there can't be *that* many "Tomo's" about?! Read more

My Punto 1.2 ELX Speedgear has a 3-year warranty. Fiat offer to extend this for two further years and a total of 60,000 miles (which is all I need) for £279. Does this seem a good deal? HJ has expressed doubts about the longevity of the CVT transmission. Read more

Honest John

Just had an Alfa 156 owner tell me his official Alfa 3-year warranty claim was turned down for a failed starter motor because it was gummed up with clutch dust. Will take this up with FIAT/Alfa UK next week. But £279 to extend a warranty for two years is cheap if it properly covers the CVT box.

Such a lovely post and it wasn't a let down even after that huge build up!

V interesting too so I have taken the liberty of shifting it to a brand spanking new thread.

"Here goes (fingers crossed)...

Just recently i have been looking to buy a Alfa 155.
Last weeks Exchange and Mart had a advert:
Alfa Romeo 155 2.5 V6, 1996/N ,Black ,Sports pack, 45K,Just serviced,Climate,new mot ............ £ 3850 private sell
Sounds promising especially with the rare sports pack and climate. I explained to the seller that i would be travelling 70 miles to view the car so i would like to know everthing about the car beforehand. He explained that he was the second owner the car had full Alfa history and was in excellent condition.

So i set off quite hopeful about buying this car.
On arrival the seller started to open the doors/tailgate/bonnet and started a conversation about where he bought the car (Bradford)alarm bells started to ring, on the phone he said Bolton ! . More bizzare comments followed. I walk round to the engine bay and then came then relevation "the radiator was replaced because a stone went thru it (not too bad) ,and oh yes the engine was also damaged and was replaced by one which has done 45K,the clock shows 85K and oh yes the front subframe was also replaced"
What did you say ? you must be joking!
I had travelled 70 miles to see see a car with 45K not 85K.His advert was misleading and he lied on the phone.
He carried on " the aircon does'nt work , and why do you have a problem with high milelage ?"
Could not believe this guy. Must have been in late 50's very well spoken lived posh area. Its true what they say you cannot trust anyone these days.

Very next day i looked at a XR2 with a friend who was looking to buy it.Again it sounded excellent 2 owners, owned a professional couple in there 40's nice house e.t.c . Lots of reciepts and was in excellent condition (best 1987 XR2 i have seen in a long time).HPI check was clear so i checked the chassis number only to find there was'nt one just a bodged plate and of course the engine number had been ground off. Its a RINGER....

Its a dodgy world" Read more

An '80s' acquaintance in a cut throat business bought a BMW from a lovely couple at thir own house after showing them in a take it or leave it way a briefcase full of cash (Him at the time:" Bid 'em in the b*****ks") (Them:''Oooo, Ethel, we really should accept his offer, don't you think the the car's worth that, he's such a nice young man, etc"). Eight months down the line there was a knock on the door from the local stolen car squad who, after extensive examination, declared it stolen. £8,000 down the swanney. Get it checked every time.

For what it's worth, you don't have to pay full retail for Mobil 1. I buy it at £19 including VAT for 4 litres from an official Mobil wholesaler. What's more, he delivers it to my door by lorry at that price (although I do tend to purchase 4 lots at a time to make it worth his while). Try getting a quote from your nearest Mobil wholesaler (see their website for a list). You may be surprised!
