CALLING VOLVO V40 OWNERS/SPECIALISTS - Adam Going (Tune-Up Ltd)
Hi All,

Currently have a problem with a Volvo V40 2.0 Turbo (4cyl, 16v). Intermittent starting problem, with engine sometimes cranking unevenly then starting on 2, then 3, then 4 cylinders. Management light comes on with code for crank sensor. Car is 9 months / 7k old still under warranty.

Dealer has had car three times and now replaced the crank sensor, but my feeling is that the problem is more valve related, possible with hydraulic lifters jacking / sticking. Dealer insists on using Duckhams QXR, and until warranty is out we have to go along with that. Does anyone have any experience of a similar problem with this engine, and any specific recommendations on oil for this engine, bearing in mind it is a turbo and driven hard most of the time ? My personal prefference is to go to Vauxhall's Prestige 10/40 Semi-Syn (a Texaco product, I beleive) as I use it extensively with good results.

Have heard that there was a TSB on valve lifters on Volvo 940. Anyone know about that ?

Thanks in anticipation, Adam

Can't Volvo dealers fix problems with Volvo cars?

Roger,

Evidently NOT !!

If Volvo is using Renault parts for the crank sensor the problem could be in the cable or in the connectors. Very common on Renault Meganes.

Thanks HJ. It doesn't look like the Renauslt item, which I agree is a common problem, but I will try to find out where they source it.

I have no experience of the V40, but I have dealt many times with an 850 which has identical symptoms to yours. Like you I believed the problem to be valves sticking open or not opening because of lifters jacking or collapsing. I have tried everything short of dissassembling the cylinder head, including flushing oil,Forte treatments, injecting oil into cylinders, different oils, different filters etc. However the problem kept occuring.
However on my last attempt to get this Volvo started I tried a new approach. The owner had been cranking it over and it had that 'no compression' sound. I then removed the fuel pump fuse, result was engine started immediately on all four, and of course very quickly stopped. When the pump fuse was put back car started and ran normally. I told customer to try this next time it happened -I have not heard from him since,I believe he is now 'fixing it' himself.
All the above suggests that it is an overfuelling problem, after all why would
pulling fuel pump fuse suddenly cause alleged faulty lifters to work normally!
How about trying this on yours next time it occurs

All the best
David Davies

Thanks for that one David, we will certainly give that a try next time the fault occurs. If so, it would point to a wiring fault or an ECU glitch, as I can't see the temp sensor being so intermittently the cause (like once every four weeks or so). Will keep you posted !

Regrads, Adam

PS. Is that David Davies at Raglan, by any chance ??!!
Re: CALLING VOLVO V40 OWNERS/SPECIALISTS - Andrew Petterson
Same Adam who posted on the Volvo Owners Club Message Board?
I would try again there, they will have heard of most problems, or will have contacts in the trade who will help you. But is it after a cold start, and then a short run, sometimes the 850's have been known to develop a loss of compression after a short run from cold on restarting.

Cheers,

Andy

Yes its David Davies of Tune-Up Raglan as you thought. Looking forward to hearing the cause of your Volvo problem. It seems to be quite common and I haven't yet heard a proper explanation of it.
