the gas conversion may neutralise engine rev limiter, which may put the automatic gearbox into neutral, when the engine speed exceeds the permitted RPM.
i will be getting the solution to the problem tomorrow (friday). Read more
My two year old Saxo has a loud knock when changing gear on the move.
It sounds like a worn drive shaft [has only done 9000miles. it is a 1.1].
My local Citroen dealer says this is normal. In amazement at this I contacted Citroen Customer Care in Slough. They say they are aware of a noise but it is nothing to worry about and I should expect such things on a mass produced car. I have stopped other owners who don't know what I am talking about.
Now what shall I do ???? Read more
My car (Scenic 1.6 16valve) uses about 7.5p worth of petrol per mile at about 42mpg. What would be the likely cost using LPG (ignoring capital cost of installation). Read more
It works out about 50-60% of the cost of running on petrol. I run a 1991 Golf GTI on LPG and fuel costs are circa 5p/mile vs 10p/mile on unleaded. There is a 10% loss in economy, no loss in performance and LPG costs 35p/L vs 68p as at present. (it was even better when closer to 80p/L!)
Had about 30 e-mail messages returned in the last few hours.
The thing is I haven't sent any of them.
Most of them seem to have been taken from my address book which automatically places them there when I return a e-mail.
The message I have supposedly sent is all gobbledy gook and not understandable.
Among them may be some of the people who visit this site who I have spoken to by e-mail. So if you receive a non-understandable message from me I haven't sent it. Sorry if you have received any.
I've seen this topic mentioned before under virus topics.
I'm just hoping its BT who have made a mistake.

Thank you Clive.
I have always in the past, (with older cars) after changing the oil filter, immobilised the ignition and spun the engine over for a few seconds in order to get the oil pressure up, before starting the engine properly.
Is this good practice with a Cat, or am I in danger of flooding it with fuel?
I don't like the idea of starting the engine with an empty oil pump-is there an alternative method I could use? Read more
Roger,
May not strictly be necessary, but still good practice. Best way to protect the Cat on an injected engine is to pull the fuse for the fuel pump, or remove the pump relay, so that there is no fuel injected.

I have recently had some warranty work (used car) carried out by a well known Rover main dealer in SE London.
I had a lower radiator outlet pipe split.
I took the car to the dealer and explained the exact fault - I even drew a diagram for them! (I knew the precise details because I had to effect emergency repairs in order to get the vehicle to the garage)
They charged me for a radiator pressure-test , saying this was a requirement of the insurers, before they would agree to the claim. I checked with the warranty company who said they did not ask for any diagnostic work.
I am disputing the garage fee ( 0.4 hour @ £64 per hour) saying that the test was unnecessary and in any event, they would have seen the fault if they had simply removed the bottom hose--work that they have already been paid for.
It would seem that diagnostic work is not covered by the warranty, but this is not stated in the policy document.

After lots of correspondence, I have received a cheque for the disputed amount! Be aware of this ploy!! Read more
Diagnostic work is not covered by any Mechanical Breakdown Warranty.
Never has been and I doubt that it ever will be.

That's excellent news from Andy and something for me to add to the car by car? The question is, why can't the AA or the RAC do something similar. Okay, we all know the answer to that. Because they provide breakdown cover for the manufacturers.

I have been offered a Merc Coupe by an importer from Ireland for about 3,000 pound less than a UK car. i know the warranty is one year( although I have been told this will be increased to 2 years from Jan 02) but will this car always suffer on resale later.

Speedometer is in MPH if it is an Irish spec car - I have an Irish spec car.
Resale values don't bother me since after 8 years (I plan on keeping the car) and 100k plus on the clock it is not worth worrying about residual values.
Maybe different for a Merc.
Why go through an Importer - why not do it yourself?
Hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and are not suffering with quite as much indigestion as I am right now :o)
I read with interest the various responses to Richard Price's "paint protection" question. I have polished cars of mine on several occasions with various polishes including Autoglym, Halfords own and also Colour Magic but seem to always, without fail, end up with swirl marks on the paintwork. It always looks good after I've done it but in the wrong light or perhaps under a petrol station forecourt set of lights you can see all the marks in the paintwork. I have used all the proper polishing cloths, meticulously washed the car beforehand so what is it I am doing wrong? Many garages valeters seem to be able to make a fantastic job of polishing up the cars which end up on the forecourt so how do they do it without the dreaded swirl marks?
I look forward to your responses as always!

I do a small section at a time with a circular motion followed by a straight flourish but still don't get a very deep and long lasting shine. However, I recently discovered a small amount of polish left in a very old tin of Simoniz GT-Wax and this gave a brilliant shine with much better colour than anything else I have used for a long time - and the shine is lasting much longer! Unfortunately GT-Wax has been discontinued and I can't find any old stock.
Help....
Pulled up in the drive today with the wifes maestro Turbo Diesel.
Taking the key out the red battery charging light remained on.

The most unreliable car i have ever had was a Metro , i had the exact problem you describe and can confirm the above comments reguarding the Diode pack being faulty , one of the diodes has gone short circuit, repair is quite easy requiring only a cheap diode pack.
Thanks for both replies. Yes the noise does go away if I lift off the clutch a little slower.
