Can anyone suggest a simple way of preventing the rubber door seals freezing to the doors in freezing weather? It doesn't seem right to just force the doors open ! Read more
Most garages now sell ultra low sulphur fuel. My fuel consuption seems to have increased by up to 5% since it's introduction. Is this normal? Read more

Should have said 'air density' of course! Must be the results of yesterday's celebrations! I'm trying to work out whether increased air density would affect carb fed cars - I've certainly found in the past that they can be a lot worse on fuel in winter, but don't know the primary cause. Rarely use the Minor in Winter, so can't really check.
Greater air density will increase drag on the car, but whether this is significant I'm not sure.
Another winter affect will be that colder tyres will also increase drag

Hi all,
A friend of the family has just bought a K plate 1.1i Fiesta Freestyle. Since they've had it starting it has become a pain. This was traced to a collapsed 'cat', and this has since been replaced. The problem is now that it won't start at all ! If the ECU fuse is removed, it will start but only on the fuel that is in the sytem, after that it cuts out. With the fuse replaced it won't start at all.
It seems as if the ECU is overfueling and flooding the car. Would remapping the ECU do any good ?
Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Seasons greetings to all !

Yes, the Cat was making a noise as if something was loose inside.
I will go down and see them later and pass on your suggestion. Let's hope that it turns out to be something cheap and simple !
Cheers,
Ash.
I have had lots of queries ref company car tax, best place I found was chap called Mark at Business Car Solutions dot co uk. Read more
But does Ronald EVER get your order right at the drive froo?
Friday night my other-half's '96 Fiat Cinquecento wouldn't start on the way to work. Turned the ignition key and nothing happened. Lots of juice in the battery but the starter motor didn't want to know.
Anyway I called out the AA and was very impressed with the service. I rang them at 19:15 and was told they would arrive by 20:00. Five minutes later I received a text message on my mobile stating they would arrive by 19:45, which is the exact time the guy turned up.
He managed to get the car going saying it was a loose connection on the starter motor which he'd tightend, and reckoned I'd have no more trouble with it...
...which was great until the "cured" problem re-occured late last night when my heavily-pregnant other-half was about to drive us home after a night out with me in a rather heavily inebriated state. Read more
What have you to complain about?
The AA arrived in good time repaired your car, ok he made a wrong call saying the problem was cured (implying a permanent repair) but he got the car going and he will have found a suspect connection.
I work on breakdowns (30 yearsin the warm indoors) and can tell you that intermittent faults are extremely hard to locate and i have had occasions where two or three separate faults have been present the problem being on going for days. This chap has repaired your car in the freezing outdoors!
Being a RAC member i would suggest the problem is your car not the individual from the AA
My car insurance will be due early in Jan. I am a wrinkly with full prot n/c bonus. Comprehensive cover for owner only needed (i.e. one driver). Have insured through Royal Sun Alliance for some years, by far the best quote. Just checked the much vaunted AA and found the quote is twice the price. Last year found Saga not competitive.
Any suggestions, please, you guys? Read more
Thanks to all. I should have said that my car is bog standard. Also that i'm in postcode SL4, which is regarded as greater london I suppose.
What annoyed me about AA was that they came up with a quote which they said was the best then, when I said it wasn't good enough, dropped it by about 40 quid!
Not being in the habit if locking up the wheels when braking I took advantage of the snow yesterday to try out the ABS in Sainsbury's carpark.
The wheels locked up alright, I steered right - and went straight on.
Does the ABS not work at low speed (about 10 mph) or is it faulty?
What types of fault are likely?
The only time I have emergency stopped recently was about 6 months ago when a couple of escaped dogs ran out in front of me on a dual carriageway, but that was in a straight line. Read more

Yes, that could be the problem. HJ certainly has been unreliably edited in the past. Don't really like to take issue with PR, as he talks a good deal of sense. I just wonder if on many occasions he's preaching to the converted - not his fault of course - there are those who know it all!
Compliments of the season

I do hope it is not necessary to build another one, for a crash tesr! Read more
That's a very good point, Tomo. It won't have to be crashed, but will it pass an enhanced SVA?

I am shortly to take delivery of a new car. I will stay well clear of car washes with brushes, advice please on what car polishes to use. Many thanks and a merry christmas. Read more
Autoglym as described seems best on any laquered paint finish. It has minimal abrasive. I also use it in the same combination on alloy wheels - works a treat and hoses off with little effort.
Hi
Can somebody help please!
I have a rear view mirror that keeps falling off my windscreen.
Tried adhesive 'recommended' by the car shop - still falls off, £3.99 for a poxy amount!
Tried double sided sticky pads 'recommended' by the shop - cheaper but equally as unsuccessfull.
Tried double sided laminated flooring tape 'my idea' - most successfull to date, fell off 15 minutes into the journey!
Any suggestions on how to attach the mirror stopping short of screwing the thing to the windscreen?
Cheers

Merry Christmas from a very sober Brian.
A sinus infection and antibiotics means I am on the wagon and NO chance of being done for drink-driving!
The thing to keep in mind is that the mirror attachment should not be TOO good, as it is meant to break away in the case of an accident.
talc??
Treatment prior to sticking that is...
