December 2001
Guys,
Have a great Christmas all.
It's been an interesting year. Thanks for your company, humour and advice.
At the start of 2001 I didn't expect to...
*Have top advice on Land Rover piston skirt rings from John S.
*Receive excellent stress counselling from Darcy.
*Get the best Rover 400 buying advice ever from David L.
*Smile at "Victor Meldrew" type retirement grumpiness from Tomo.
*Laugh time and again at Guy L and his "anall day bender". Just one slip of the space bar to create a legend.
*Learn again and again from Adam and Andrew, the Tune-Up boys.
*Nearly broker the purchase of a very rare Vincent Black Shadow motorcycle at a fraction of its value from Chris W who was virtually selling one.
*Feel even more disappointed when realising this was the only Black Shadow made with the gyro perpetual motion engine.
*Find comradeship in those willing to stand up and admit "I own a Citroen Xantia and I like it".
*Take pleasure in seeing "Micky Huh Huh" post so much anti-Xantia stuff that they devalued enough that we now can look at buying a second. Thanks Micky, I wonder where/who you are now?
*Come to know the name Bogush as a (the!) great cut and paste warrior.
*Display a bumper sticker saying "I've met Mark from Brazil".
I could go on and on but present wrapping for the girls calls.
Thanks to HJ and Martyn for providing the vehicle for this journey.
I could just look in tomorrow to see if Santa has posted anything. Might seem a bit sad logging-on during Christmas day. But which will SWMBO prefer, that or just having to pressure wash the Land Rover back body in my new slippers after lunch!
Cheers,

Can the South African based back roomers tell me which of the Japanese brands build in South Africa?Im thinking of the pick-up trucks which look pretty good value with the current Rand/Pound exchange and am tempted to import one to the UK. Read more
HJ, (and anybody else interested)
email me a fax number and I'll send you a list as well!

* We'll start the campaign to have the term added to the next Oxford English Dictionary in the new year :o) Read more
Hmm, could have it as a verb.
To mean 'to meet in a private area and support our government hating, speed camera destroying, pro inppropriate speeding, and general supporting illegal activities' ;-)

Non-motoring topic, but:

Dear John, as one of the more informed members of the backroom (Yes I mean you!), may I wish you a very happy, peaceful and prosperous new year. And the same wishes to all out there. Be well,Be Safe!

Having just read H.J. road test on this car this am i find it hard to believe that a Granada sized car at 80+mph will return 40+mpg? Is there any owners who can confirm this. My 2litre primera will return 33mpg at speeds to 90mph but to expect 40mpg from a heavier car?
H.J. relates to rear leg room its about 6" longer than the bmw.A4
The praised analogue clock on the ford cortina i had made an annoying ticking sound when stood.
A friend of ours has the 1.8 estate Mondeo ,he just gave me a funny look when i mentioned the mileage claims and also made the comment of not moving to the new car quote "it will not fit the garage" Read more
My 1.8i Cavalier consistently does 37-42 mpg though admittedly it suffers little town driving though frequently several morning jams. The 1.6i which was recently acquired for the missus is even better and will crack 550 miles off a full tank and averages 45 mpg.
To HJ, and all the backroom contributors, wishing you an enjoyable Christmas and a peaceful New Year. ( With hopefully trouble-free motoring ) !

Hear Hear Tony, all good wishes to those who make this site so enjoyable. I must say though I can't agree with your sentiments re trouble free motoring.
Without all these vehicle problems, and the splendid and helpful replies, how else can I continue to astound my aquaintances in 2002, as I have in 2001, with my vast knowledge of the faults and foibles of the modern motor car ?
does anyone know of a place to get hold of an ex police Volvo V70 in the north of England, other than at auctions? Read more
Yeah, I had a look at them once there. I'll keep an eye out on that place. Plus I might venture to an auction. Thanks for the advice. My thinking was that I won't be doing that many miles in them since changing jobs recently, but need the space they offer. I'll give it some thought...
My 3 yr old Corsa 1.7 diesel has given me good service over the last 40000 miles and still works fine, it's basic but I appreciate that there's a minimum of things to go wrong. However over the last 9 months or so it has developed an irritating buzz (for lack of a better word) which comes in over the engine noise at cruising speed. Someone said that it could be a resonance of the clutch cable. Is this a known fault of the model?

Try lifting the clutch pedal with your foot when the noise is there.
Have a look at the two recent topics - 'Ford Diesel 1600 problem'. And 'Paint problems'. Two ordinary run of the mill topics asked by people with a genuine question. And look at the response - loads of genuine useful advice about the diesel engine, and a pretty definitive opinion regarding car polish giving two sensible options.
Yes, the political aspects which arise here are important and get aired fully, but lots of people, I'm sure, pick up bucketloads of helpful everyday stuff about their cars. And for many, I think that's what they want and what they're getting.
Thanks to all concerned including HJ and Martyn.

About three weeks ago a stone chipped the windscreen dead centre about three inches from the bottom. Then ten days ago I noticed a hairline crack creeping horizontally from the chip to the left. (This was the outer layer of the lamination only.) The crack now extends almost to the edge on the left and about six inches to the right.
I don't think the screen is going to explode, but does anyone have advice on the legality of the situation. The crack is along the line normally covered by the wipers in the parked position, and is below the bonnet line when viewed from the normal seating position. My next MOT is next May - think I'll be safe 'til then? Any advice gratefully received.
