Help,
My Mondeo, reg Jan 97 30000ish Mls,is coming up for its 5th service, one Garage is saying as it is 5yrs old the Cam Belt and Tensioner should be changed, the local Ford Garage goes along with this although the Hand Book says 10 yrs or 80000 Mls.
Advice please, Read more

David L is right, breakage of a belt within a "warranty" period is something I hope never to see.

It is a grey area. For example it is possible for a small stone (the size of a pea) or bolt to drop in the belt cover and get trapped between the belt and the pulley. This can make a hole in the belt that then fails, perhaps within a few hundred miles.

No-ones fault but if you'd paid someone £200 the month before to change the belt you 'd be after them I guess.

I have an old 1985/86 Ford diesel estate car which I use for running my dogs around in.

I have driven it for over 2 yrs. without experiencing any problems whatsoever. However when I tried to start it the other morning it would not start.

Since then my boyfriend has checked the glow plugs, they are all worling okay.He has checked that there is no air in the fuel system and that there is a supply of fuel to the injectors. He has checked that there is power going to the cold start device and fuel cut off solenoid. He has checked that the cam belt isn't snapped.

Consequently he has now run out of ideas as to to why it won't start and would be grateful for any suggestions as to what may be wrong with the car and why it won't start.

I thank you for any assistance you may be able to render. Read more

Kim/Peter,

Julian has pointed us back to this post, bit of a puzzle now. Four points from me.

1. Have you checked the engine/pump timing to ensure the cambelt hasn't jumped a few teeth. Long shot but his could just have happened as you tried to start it the first morning it played up.

2. Even longer shot, lift the cam cover to ensure the cam hasn't snapped.

3. Is it worth getting a diesel fitter to look at it?

4. If you want more help start a new thread linking back to this one or we'll forget you.

Last night I dreamt we were on holiday with my parents. Bad enough to begin with, but then I went to show them our new car (which they haven't seen yet). It was parked on a hardstanding near the cottage we were all staying in. I thought something was wrong with it, but couldn't work out quite what. My father commented on the fact that one of the front light mountings seemed to be bent. That was when I noticed that there were no wheels left. And woke up.

I'm pleased to report that the car was intact this morning, and the front light arrangement on the car in my dream is nothing like the real thing.

THe Growler

This one is odd as well........

I have to say that just last week I found myself driving with Gloria Arroyo, our very attractive petite President (some of you may have seen her pix) in the right hand seat. Stopping at a junction I put my hand on her thigh and she turned and smiled radiantly...........

..............and then I woke up :-(

Rather oddly, two days after that the Growlette was in church for morning mass, and Gloria was there on one of her periodic walkabouts among the people. Growlette was able to speak briefly to the President and shook her hand.

So, at least one of us managed to press the flesh in the flesh so to speak!

Can anyone tell me the torque settings for the rear wheel bearings of the above car, or the method for tighting them up. I have been trying to get a manuel for this car but up to now no luck.

Lew,

Seasons Greetings to the best forum I visit.

Following on from the "Cold Morning" topic in September. Arse warming Swedish motors, Japanese wives etc

Could the backroom please advise me the best method to clear front the screen effectively on my Primera. It defies my attempts to clear it by remisting very quickly, rendering my first few hundred yards an accident waiting to happen

Could Darcy tell us more about his step fathers fan heater on the back shelf.
How was it powered.

Do I risk cracking the screen by using a battery powered hair dryer.

Has anyone a favourite de icer?

Thanks in advance Read more

Attach clean lint free duster to left hand, extend forward and wipe screen as you drive along. Repeat as necessary, (until heater does job for you).
BTW remember not to swerve into ditch as you do it.

I'm driving an A-Class loan car at the moment, a 2000 A140 Elegance, and thoughtfully the car's handbook is missing from the car.

Immeditately beneath the ventilation dials and alongside the recirculated-air button are two buttons whose function is a mystery to me. One is labelled "EC" and the other has a symbol on it that looks vaguely similar to that of the rear-heated screen. Upon switching either on nothing discernible seems to happen.

Anyone shed any light?

All cars with a/c have an 'Econ' position, so I guess they are!

I found myself behind a 'car' that looked like a bread-van-with-windows today. In the back was a yellow warning sticker that said "tiny person on board". I felt like jumping out and applying my own sticker -"Then why such a bl**dy big car?"......
I've just remembered, it was a Berlingo (or something). Read more

there was also the "Silver Mist" that almost got sold in Germany - nice one Rolls, a "Silver Manure" would have gone down really well... and I understand that "Pajero" is slang for "W*NK*R" is some Spanish markets so Mitsubishi seem to have got than one right.

Honest John

Okay, there are now so many Car of The Year Contests that almost anything could be. So I might as well launch the Honest John Cars of The Year Awards.

The big difference will be that in this case I will step back and open the competition entirely to my website visitors and Backroomers. I'll have no say.

There are five and only five categories:-

1: Car of The Year (Your overall favourite)

2: Sensible Car of The Year (Self-explanatory)

3: Dream Car of The Year (What you'd go for if you won the Lotto)

4: Used Car of The Year (The best used car choice £5k to £15k)

5: Used Banger of The Year (The best cheapie under £1k)

Send your votes by e-mail, e-mail subject 'Cars of The Year' to: letters@honestjohn.co.uk

Only e-mails subject 'Cars of The Year' will be included in the tally.
Very early in the New Year I'll count them all up and let you know the results.

One more category: I'm going to go along with Moosh's suggestion (thanks, Moosh) of adding 'Worst Car of the Year' currently on sale (meaning worst new car, not worst used car). But please also make your nominations for the other categories, and mark the subject of your e-mail 'Cars of The Year'.
