Paris introduces classic car ban 20 Jun 2016 (News)
There are already rumours that other European cities will follow the lead of Paris, with London in particular struggling to lower its emissions and meet EU nitrogen oxide levels. Is it only a matter of time before the UK’s major cities adopt similar measures? WHAT DO YOU THINK? Do you agree with Paris’ ban on pre-1997 cars during weekdays? -
New £2000 diesel scrappage scheme set to be announced 20 Apr 2017 (News)
So why is there a need for the scrappage scheme? In 2013, almost 12,000 premature deaths were linked to nitrogen oxide, according to the European Environment Agency. Diesel cars emit a high quantity of Nitrogen Oxide , which are linked to respiratory diseases like asthma, with older models said to be particularly polluting. -
Classic diesels face threat from air quality ruling 2 May 2015 (News)
Classic diesels could come under pressure after the Government was ordered to comply with tough European air pollution limits. The Supreme Court decision aims at reducing nitrogen dioxide emissions, which are largely produced by diesel engines. It comes just months after Honest John Classics warned of a new scrappage scheme for diesels . -
'Urgent action' required to combat car tyre and brake dust pollution 11 Jul 2019 (News)
The industry's concentration on reducing tailpipe emissions has contributed to a 29 per cent improvement in nitrogen oxide emissions since 2010, while sulphur dioxide emissions are down 62 per cent. -
First Diesel Engine to Meet Euro 4 Emission Regs 17 Dec 2002 (News)
Water-cooled exhaust recirculation lowers the temperature of recycled exhaust, cutting NOx emissions. "The 1.7 CDTi ECOTEC engine successfully restricts both particle and nitrogen oxides emissions to the area in which they are produced, thus reducing exhaust emissions," said Rita Forst, managing director of Opel Powertrain. She said the engine can be introduced into the market in smaller cars in large numbers. -
Should classic cars be scrapped? 6 Oct 2015 (News)
For a start, the majority of classic cars use petrol engines and therefore don’t emit anywhere near the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) as modern diesel engines do. And, after all, it was this NOx figure that Volkswagen was trying to cheat. But the argument goes way beyond petrol versus diesel. It’s how classic cars are used that means these clunkers with their ‘old’ engines shouldn’t be scrapped. -
SMMT issues a statement on Volkswagen emissions scandal 23 Sep 2015 (News)
A range of emissions is tested, including carbon monoxide, particulate matter, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides (NOx). What is the test? It is a laboratory test, which ensures consistency and absolute comparability from one vehicle to another. The vehicle is put onto a ‘rolling road’ and fitted with equipment to measure emissions. -
Used Van Buying Guide: Mercedes-Benz Citan 2012 -2019 26 Nov 2019 (News)
Another voluntary recall was issued in July 2017 relating to engine software, in a bid to reduced nitrogen oxide emissions. Ask the seller if this has been done - again, they should have paperwork to prove it. Always check whether it idles smoothly, if not it could point to problems with the ignition coils. -
Sustainable Mobility, According to Renault Eco2 16 Jun 2010 (News)
Instead of simply recirculating high pressure hot exhaust gasses via an EGR back into the inlet manifold, the low pressure system takes the post particulate filter gases, cools them via a heat exchanger, then re-introduces them to the turbo compressor after which they are cooled again by the intercooler before being reintroduced to the combustion chambers. This cuts emissions of nitrogen oxides far more effectively than a conventional EGR. A further innovation is a variable displacement oil pump that absorbs less energy than a conventional high-pressure oil pump with relief valve. -
Huge Engine Technology Breakthrough From FIAT 7 Mar 2009 (News)
* Optimum valve control strategies during engine warm-up and internal exhaust gas recirculation, realised by reopening the intake valves during the exhaust stroke, result in emissions reductions ranging from 40 per cent for unburnt hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide (HC/CO), and up to a 60 per cent cut in oxides of nitrogen, (NOx). * Constant upstream air pressure, atmospheric for naturally aspirated and higher for turbocharged engines, together with extremely fast air mass control, cylinder-by-cylinder and stroke-by-stroke, result in a superior dynamic engine response, and enhanced driving pleasure. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 6-6-2015 6 Jun 2015 (News)
If I switch the engine off once warm and restart, the light no longer appears. I have had the fault diagnosed by an official BMW dealer and have been told that the Nitrogen oxide sensor and the pulse generator on the exhaust camshaft require replacement at a cost of £621. The garage in Northwood is insisting that it carries out its own diagnostic check to determine if the diagnosis already carried is correct.
