  • Proton Persona Coupe - h/brake & caliper 29 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Thanks for all your help when i last asked about the brakes, since then drove it with the bonnet open so that took priority in the fixing stages. Just taken the wheel off the back to look at this handbrake situation and why the right rear brake doesn't seem t work and when i spun the actual disc with no wheel or handbrake on it caught at about 2 places round the disc, making a metal on metal noise, it makes this noise when driving obviously, when the handbrake is on it doesn't stop the car but you can't spin the disc anymore with your hand.
  • Scrap it or repair it? 23 Sep 2004 (Forum)
SWMBO's Punto* has just gone in for it's MOT and has failed on a couple of points; front brake imbalance, front brake pipes corroded. "That's not too bad" I hear you say - however, apart from that, the brake master cylinder is leaking, the rear brakes need replacing, there is a fuel leak (on the fuel line near fuel filter), the fuel tank holding straps are corroded and they'll need to be replaced if the leak is to be fixed as the tank will need to be removed, there is quite alot of corrosion in general to the underside, the rear shocks are knackered etc. - you're starting to get the picture!
  • Seat Toledo Rattle 25 Apr 2004 (Forum)
As I said, when you kick the wheel, you hear what I'm sure is this rattle. If you wedge a screwdriver between the brake caliper and one of the holes in the ally wheel and then kick the wheel = no rattle. If when driving, as soon as you brake the rattle goes. Let the brake off, and the rattle returns. I'm feeling it must be something to do with the brakes but nothings obviously loose.
  • Kwik Fit 6 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Yeah I know, its like marmite, you either like them or hate them. I took my car to 3 branches and enquired about their "Free safety brake inspection".Here's what I have been told and wonder if who were right. KwikFit 1: I mentioned that 2 weeks ago my car was serviced by a specialists garage, and was told several parts needed replacing on the braking system. Therefore, can I have a 2nd opinion and have the "Free brakes Inspection" and a written quotation. They said sorry we cannot carry out the inspection, because the specialists garage will know what to replace so you're better off going back.
  • clean wheel discs? 17 Jan 2017 (Forum)
Hi, Can anyone point me in the right direction for the plastic discs that go on the inside of your alloys to keep brake dust off them? I seem to remember that my brother had a set years ago but I haven't seen them since, is that because they effect brake cooling or something else? Thanks. Steve.
  • Citroen c5 estate hdi 2003 - Retracting the front callipers 26 Jun 2013 (Forum)
Hi I'm trying to change the front brake pads but the calliper on the passenger side will not retract. The hand brake is off and I have removed the cap on the fluid pot. Is this because the calliper is seized or am I missing something. Thanks Darren

  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 2005 - 1.9 TDI - Long ''spongy'' brake pedal 30 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Sounds very like air trapped somewhere. Have they tried it with all hoses clamped? It could be air in the ABS modulator, or a faulty modulator itself...
  • Using brake anti-squeal grease? 13 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Some main dealers will not use a copper-based anti-squeal grease (e.g. Copaslip istr) on the back of the pads. I used to do this when I did my own servicing...
  • Rubbing/Grinding sound MK2 Golf 18 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Hi Everyone, Under braking I get a rubbing or grinding which sounds like brake pads worn to the metal - Ive checked all four and there is plenty of meat left on them. It seems to be coming from the rear nearside of the car - im out of ideas?
  • Ford Ka - front brakes 9 Jun 2016 (Forum)
I noticed straight away though that the brake pedal had virtually no play in it. It hadly compressed at all, maybe about half an inch. It was solid. I live in a quiet street so I decided to take the chance and go for a drive. When I braked the pedal was the same, hadly any play at all.
  • Honda crv - Halford's Autocentres 22 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Expensive items to replace. We took the car to our local garage who did a brake and clutch fluid flush and replace. This seemed to sort the issue of excessive creep of the brake pedal to the floor. However, the car still failed the retest. We took the car back to the garage for a new MOT test ... and it passed with an advisory about the brake pedal showing some creep.
  • Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - Hearing air when I press the brake pedal 24 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi, I have bought a Mondeo 2.0 TDCI Zetec in the last few days and last night I started to notice the following issue: 1) I turn the engine on 2) When I press the brake pedal I can hear air being released (while the pedal is going down, not once it stops moving) 3) I turn the engine off 4) I press the brake again a few times and hear air then it stops and the pedal stiffens up (so that it hardly presses down) 5) If I restart the engine I hear air again when I press the pedal Does that sound normal?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.8 ABS and Brake warning light 1 Sep 2009 (Forum)
The ABS light sometimes comes on on start up (test) and sometimes not. It sometimes comes on and stays on or is intermittant while driving and occaisionally the brake light does the same, together or on their own. (I thought the brake warning light was just for the handbrake and fluid level.) It can also be ok for days. Brake fluid level is ok. I have checked the instrument cluster for signs of corrosion which there isn't, and sprayed contact cleaner on the plug before reconnection.
  • BMW 5-Series E34 (1987 - 1996) - 89 3.5 535 Sport ABS Issue 16 May 2008 (Forum)
ive fully bled the brakes several times and can't get any air out but there culd be some trapped in the various valves within the abs unit. the brakes themselves work quite well but the abs is very easy to set off without having to stamp right on the brakes so im sure something isn't right but not sure on what step to take next.
  • How much for a £295 service - £398 18 Apr 2006 (Forum)
In the end after spinning it out for 3 calls - my son gave in and offered to pay for the brake fluid as a gesture of goodwill but not the time @ £85 / hour they asked for. At this the service manager gave in and gave the brake fluid for free, as a gesture of goodwill. I surmise that the thought of a customer who spent £22,000 18 mths ago was worth more than an argument over the rights & wrongs of a brake fluid change.
  • Bleeding brakes 19 May 2002 (Forum)
Even after bleeding the breaks were far too spongy. Upon slackening the retaining bolts on the master cylinder, a quantity of brake fluid ran out - clearly the seals had gone on the master cylinder. I did the same on the Volvo, no fluid is present at the back of the master cylinder. I?ve checked he whole braking system - no evidence of fluid loss anywhere.
  • Unintentional Acceleration Syndrome 6 Jun 2001 (Forum)
The one and only way to retail full control of an automatic at all times is to use the left foot for the brake (or, if the driver is disabled, to have an extra hand control for the footbrake). Left foot for the brake, right foot for the accelerator prevents the right foot hitting the accelerator pedal with the force needed to brake a car.
