Astra 1.8 stalling under braking 4 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The idling speed of the Astra seems to be set a bit slo to kick in. To give a scenario, slowing for a roundabout, clutch in, braking, the revs drop from wherever they were at cruise - 300rpm for example - to 400rpm and then jump back up to idle at around 750-800. But, of course, if I am turning in, the power steering is then engaged, and the car is liable to stall. -
Jammed brake disk on Fiesta Mk2 xr2i 25 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I'm trying to remove the front disks from my Mk2 Fiesta xr2i. I've removed the brake calipers and the screw holding the disk to the hub, but the disk itself seems stuck to the hub. I've tried bashing the disk with a rubber mallet, but to no avail. Can someone advise me what I could try? -
Laguna wheel bearing & Brake cylinder 6 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Do any BR's know how easy it is to change the rear wheel bearings and brake cylinders on a '95 Laguna 1.8 non abs. Is it an easyish job and so worth getting a Haynes manual for, or am I better off getting it done at a garage. I am pretty much mechnicaly minded so do not think the cylinder will be a problem but never done a beaaring b4 so would be gratful for advice. -

Paint for brake drums - Focus 19 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I'm sure there has been a previous thread about this - but I can't find it. The rust on the rear brake drums on our Focus Chic looks 'orrible through the 3x2 spoke alloys. I tried painting the drums with old motorcycle cylinder black - which looked good for about 6 months, but now the rust is showing through again. -
Ford Fiesta brakes 3 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Ford Fiesta, 1999 - brakes are squealing. Plenty of pad material, and discs look fine. Can anyone offer any advice before I start pulling the rear drums apart? Also, the caliper guide pins on the front discs seem to require some sort of enormous allen key. -
Ford Fiesta Mk4 - Brake question... 14 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I have recently started to hear what can be described as a clicking noise coming from the offside front wheel after I apply the footbrake. This always occurs, irrespective of how quickly I apply the footbrake. The braking is not affected in any way - it remains very good. Any advice would be most appreciated. TIA Moby. -
Steering Wheel Vibration Under Braking 26 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Hi all, I've recently noticed a viabration from the steering wheel of my 1994 Granada Scorpio when braking lightly at high speed. (50 to 80) Feels similar to when the wheels are out of balance, but had 4 new tyres fitted, with balancing. First thoughts are that the discs are warped / track rod bushes worn. -

CRV brakes 14 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I am running a Honda CRV (auto petrol) out here in Cyprus. It suffers with persistant squealing from the front brake disks. I appreciate that the conditions out here are ideal for this to occur however I have had the disks hosed out and blown out regularly but with no improvement. Any ideas anyone? I seem to remember in the 'old days' we used to smear the pads and shims with a grease, is this not done anymore and why? -
leaky servo 3 Jul 2003 (Forum)

Passat Back Brakes 14 Apr 2003 (Forum)
hi all a quick one which i am sure has been asked before. My M reg CLTDI Passat just failed its MOT due to badly aligned and heavily worn back brakes. What would it be resonable to pay for this job in 1) VW main dealer 2) local trusted garage? Could i chance it and go to some quick fit place, or would this be very foolish? thanks -
Rover 220SD 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I have a Rover 220SD with a "Brakes" problem. The problem is the pedal goes rock hard and the brakes themselves are of very little use. The problem has only just started and it has never happened before. If I stop turn of the engine then restart the brake pedal goes back to normal. -
Cav MkIII petrol filler pipe/brakes 4 Oct 2002 (Forum)
After reading HJ car by car breakdown i have been enlightened to the fact that the petrol fumes I smell from time to time in the back of the car and boot, but with no leak evident, could be cracks in the petrol filler pipe. has anyone any experience of cost and difficulty of this job, either DIY or garage? any views on brake fluid changes and the extra performance this will bring would be appreciated, thanks Ellis -
Xantia Brakes 17 Jul 2002 (Forum)
Dear All, Thought I had read somewhere on this forum a question and answer about noise from Xantia HDi front brakes - but can't find it in the archive. Also recall someone saying that there was a "kit" which prevented this noise (much the same as a loose exhaust would make if catching on the body). Can anyone advise me about this "kit" - how much it costs, ease of fitment etc? -
Brake Servo - Rover Metro 8 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Am I right in assuming that all the current range of diesel engined passenger cars, due to the absence of manifold depression, are fitted with a seperate vacuum pump for servo assistance to the braking system ? Could anyone guide me on the siting of the vacuum pump,on a mid nineties Rover Metro diesel ? Is there a seperate vacuum pump and, is it driven off the timing belt ? Any guidance would be much appreciated. -
Brake fluid change 24 Jan 2002 (Forum)
It is usually recommended that brake fluid is changed every 2 or 3 years. When my car is serviced by the main dealer, they check the fluid boiling point. The latest service on my 3 year old Focus says the boiling point is 196 deg C, with a minimum allowed of 155 Deg C. -
rover brake light probs 9 Nov 2001 (Forum)
When he's driving along and accelerates hard (foot to the floor), the handbrake-on/discs worn dashboard light comes on, but works fine in all other respects. Any ideas why its doing this? Is it possible just the brakes are worn (although i thought the light would stay on permanently)? -
Toyota MR2 - brakes - hot rear discs 8 Mar 2013 (Forum)
However, since the two discs were changed they have both been running constantly hot - over a distance of 12 miles and moderate braking you can burn the skin off your fingers, and hear the tink, tink, tink of cooling brake discs after the car has stopped. The discs heat up even if I don't use the brakes, or use them very gently. The calipers have been stripped down twice and the handbrake cable adjusted as well. -
B6 2.0TFSI 2006 - VW Passat & Its problems.... 20 Oct 2011 (Forum)
I found a temp. solution to the brake lights which makes me think its the multi-function module which controls parking brake, cruise control etc and is locatewd behind the dash....when i start the car up the brake lights are always on, leaving the car on i remove both power connectors to the left and right, obviously the lights turn off and i get a warning on the dash, put them back in and they work as normal....but turn the car off, i have to repeat the same.
