Leyland Roadrunner - Leyland Roadrunner Parking Brakes 29 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I have a leyland roadrunner, 1990, which has just failed the MOT. The main failure is the parking brakes are only 7%. When you first start up, until there is enough air in the system, the lorry will not move, so they are working. The foot brakes are fine. The lorry has been sat for about 18 months. Can someone give me some clues of where I should be looking. -
Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - 04 1.8 Front brakes squealing 21 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The front pads on my Toyota Avensis were changed during a service about 1000 miles ago. Over the last couple of days the front brakes have begun to squeak/squeal like an old bus. They do not squeak every time I use the brakes, just sometimes. Last night it appeared to be getting worse. Should I be worried about this? I am intending to go back to the garage where the work was done but a bit of fore knowledge would be nice. -

Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 2000 1.4i. brake fluid changed to DOT 5 10 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Had a new axle fitted to the rear, all fitted fine. The garage replaced the existing brake fluid (dot 4) with dot 5. My car has abs The brake pedal also feels spongier now (according to some goggling its the silicon that?s in the dot 5 that?s making it do this) More research shows that it is not compatible with abs systems, is this true and do i ring them and tell them to put either dot 4 or dot 5.1 instead. -
Readers Digest - expert mechanics ? 1 Feb 2009 (Forum)
So I browsed through the Telegraph "1,000 ways to save money and time" which was free with Saturday's paper. It says you can use cooking spray (whatever that is) to clean brake dust off your car wheels. Here is the distilled wisdom of the item; "... brake dust - produced every time ... the pads wear against the brake disks or cylinders. " Cylinders indeed. If my brake pads were anywhere near the cylinders I would be looking at a design fault, not for some cooking spray. -
Renault Modus (2004 - ) - 04 1.5 High level brake light cluster not working 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I've just noticed that the high level brake light cluster is not working on SWMBO's car. Other brake lights are working fine. Does anyone know if this fault could be fuse related or something more serious? It was too dark for me to start messing around pulling fuse covers off etc so I will look tomorrow. -
Oil service, MoT+brake overhaul £160 - Value! 25 Sep 2008 (Forum)
My 10 yr old Mazda Xedos needed oil service + MoT and the brakes pulled apart as they are ageing - pistons /calipers have stuck in past and caused issues. Picked it up at my local independent and the bill £160 inc VAT and a fresh MoT - took 2.5 hrs due to the brakes. -
Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 01 1.9TDI brake & fog light fuse 17 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I found and successfully replaced the 5A tail light fuse in panel at RH edge of dashboard but cannot find a fuse for the rear fog lights and brake lights. They are not listed on the card in the fuse panel. Does anyone know if there is a second fusebox and if so where is it? I read another post about the brake light circuit being linked to the engine management circuit - is this a clue? -
Rover 400 (1995 - 1999) - 1996 1.6 - ABS Problem 29 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Hi, I have just recently purchased a Rover 400 (1600 petrol). When I apply the brakes they function correctly. However, when I release the brake pedal and re-apply immediately (at slow speeds), the ABS seems to become active i.e. I get a juddering from the brake pedal. It does not seem to do this when I first appy the brakes, but only only the second attempt. -
Scary Faults 28 Apr 2008 (Forum)
My neighbor is a retired service manager (think big cat).He was telling me about a problem they had some years ago with a microswitch. This switch was connected to the brake pedal, it's purpose was to switch off the cruise control when the brake pedal was pressed, this switch was faulty thus when the brakes were applied it didn't switch off the cruise control, instead the cruise control sensing the car was slowing down applied more throttle! -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2001 2.0ltr hatch rear brake pads 8 Mar 2008 (Forum)
hi, while driving along today with my window down I noticed my rear brake pads were rattling especially over rougher roads. If I apply my foot brake, or pull my handbrake on first click the rattle goes away.I replaced the pads about a year ago, discs are fine. Does anyone know how to stop this happening also should there be shims fitted, as there was'nt any fitted originally when I fitted the pads. -
Vauxhall - Vectra B - Brake problem after pad change 30 Aug 2007 (Forum)
A friend asked me to change his front pads following an MOT. After doing this I test drove the car and noticed that the brake pedal jumps very slightly when braking. This is not regular and is not associated with speed. When it does this it is accompanied by a slight "tick". My friend told me that the car had been doing this for some 3 weeks. -
Zafira rear brakes 20 Feb 2007 (Forum)
The piston turns and I'm pushing as hard as I can. I've tried the old trick of levering against an old brake pad but fear I might damage the caliper if I do it much more. I'd rather not undo the bleed nipple as I bled the brakes a couple of months ago. Any ideas? Thanks, -
Rear brake drum wear-VW polo 3 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Have rear brake shoes gone the same way as brake pads - harder than the discs? It is that our k plate polo rear drums have worn to the minimum tollerance in 23000 mile approx 3 years and the shoes are no where near worn. -
drum brake dummy?? mk2 1988 vw polo 10 Jul 2006 (Forum)
ok dont laugh....ive never worked on drum brakes before i have a issue on one side...the brake binds on one side with the handbrake off after a quick inspection the issue i can see is that the clyinder only moves on one side...meaning the cylinder is the usualy tube shape with a piston/plunger at each end, i would imagine the plunger should move outward equaly at both ends?? -
Latest Chav extra? 26 Apr 2006 (Forum)
On Friday night I saw what must be the latest Chav extra, and feel was probably illegal. It was an extra strip brake light fixed to the rear window, just under the original high brake light. What, in my opinion, made it illegal was that when the brake pedal was pressed it flashed red and blue alternatively. So sitting at traffic lights, with a foot on the brake, meant it showed a blue flashing light to anyone approaching. -
Gears or Brakes? 21 Mar 2006 (Forum)
May I ask the wisdom here assembled a question? I was taught to use the gear box for routine slowing down and to use the brakes only as a last resort. In the words of my still-respected instructor, "Use your brains, not your brakes." I recently read in an IAM newsletter a statement that said the exact opposite. I have always respected the IAM but to read that contradiction of the way I was taught has left me in a quandary. -
Omega Brake Fluid Change 18 Dec 2003 (Forum)

Carlton braking shudder 13 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I have a Carlton Estate, many miles under its belt but still a good workhorse that has started shuddering when braking hard. As it is possible to feel the brake pedal fluctuating combined with a noise a bit like the ABS coming into effect I assume a warped disk. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I start replacing all the disks to find out which one is the culprit. -
Astra MkII offside rear brake 3 Apr 2001 (Forum)
A couple of months ago the Rear drivers side wheel jammed on, and i could not move the car without wacking the wheel with a hammer (RAC recommendation). Now however the brake makes a ratlling noise when i go round a right hand bend or go ove a big bump, and sounds like the brake drum is hitting the wheel or is loose, but i can't see anything visible, can anybody help?
