Lexus IS - Overheating brake caliper - and flat tyres? 11 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I'm having a weird problem, I noticed a burning smell from the drivers side right wheel yesterdat. Smelled like a jammed brake caliper. Applied some WD40 to the caliper to free it up. This morning, came out and the tyre was flat. I presumed this was co-incidence, so put the spare on this morning. Travelled approx 3 miles earlier, the brake caliper is red hot again, and the spare is now flat. -
VW Passat 2001 - VW Brake Leak - Caliper Cable Attachment 7 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Hi all, My rear brake is leaking. It seems to be coming from the seal between the caliper's cylinder and the parking brake mechanism attached to it, the bit that gets rotated when the cable is pulled. It's a sort of spring-loaded tap thing, mounted by a screw... -
Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 01 1.4 Brake fluid specification 18 May 2009 (Forum)
hi,i've just replaced the front discs/pads and the rear shoes.on my xsara 1.4i (w 2000)i went to my local motor factor for DOT 4 brake fluid,to 'bleed' the brakes, but on the back it said certain citroen cars should NOT use dot 4.i asked the shop assistant and he said i should use LMH+.Is this right?i've never heard of this before,i don't want to use this 'fluid' in case it knackers the brake system.i've even looked in my haynes manual, but can't seem to find it.any help would be much appreciated. -
Alfa Romeo - 2002 2.4 engine braking 5 Feb 2009 (Forum)
A pal of mine has a 52 reg manual JTD Alfa and he tells me that his car has no engine braking. His dad has a Fiat with a JTD engine and when he bought it he apparantly commented about the lack of engine braking. We were talking about this and I suggested that these cars might have a freewheel facility. -
Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - 98 1.9tdi front brake pads replacement 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Would using a G-clamp damage the caliper? Also i saw a mechanic taking the lid off the brake fluid container before when replacing my back brake pads. I didnt see this mentioned in the guide. Do I need to do this? THANKS, CARLOVER -
Squeaky brakes - Ford Focus 21 Oct 2006 (Forum)
To be perfectly blunt, they're doing my head in. Whenever I brake when I'm going slowish or coming to a stop, the brakes squeak very loud. Normally they'd do this and then stop after a while but they're doing it all the time and I wince every time it happens. I'm 99% certain it's coming from the back, therefore, the drums. -
W Micra - Brake Noise 15 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I have a year 2000 Micra 1L, last year I had the brake pads replaced, the discs were ok at that time. I have a grinding sort of noise, not squealing, coming from the passenger side wheel when I apply the brakes, it sounds a bit like when the pads were worn down. -
Damn Galaxy problems again! BRAKES! 1 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Hi there, I have a 2004 reg Ford galaxy TDi PD 130, two weeks ago it had its 40,000 mile service. I was driving it the other day, and i had to apply the brakes full on. As soon as i did this, the car beeped thre times at me and the brake system warning light started flashing, then went out after flashing for about a minute and then stopped. It has now done this dunring heavy braking ever since! -
Omega suspension braking problem 29 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Checked tyre pressures etc and had tracking done in September when I replaced a track rod end. Only things left, could it be a rear brakes problem? Any ideas? -
Vectra spongy brakes 17 Dec 2004 (Forum)
They have checked the whole braking system (so they say) and have found no problems. Before the pads were changed the brakes were absolutely fine, i would go as far to say they were excellent. Does anybody know how changing the pads can cause this problem. -
Dirty wheels = brakes working better? 26 May 2004 (Forum)
Spent way too long at the jet wash yesterday (and burnt my arm, but that's another story) getting the brake dust off my alloys. As Polo needs new brake pads anyway, I toddled along to Halfords to see if they had any of the Green Stuff ones I've read about that don't make your wheels dirty. Halfords monkey proceeded to explain to me that "dirty wheels mean your brakes are good, as it's softer pads that work better. -
106 rear brakes 21 May 2004 (Forum)
is there an adjustment mechnism that will release the tension on the shoes to allow me to take the drum off , and if so where is it ? I was also wondering if it could be one of the brake cables causing it ( been told that there are 2 brake cables for these cars ). any advice would be highly appreciated .... The other Wheel is fine...... -
A3 Quattro recall (new shape) 15 Apr 2004 (Forum)
In extreme cases this could result in failure of one brake circuit" If only they would do something about the brakes being ridiculously over-servo'd - it's the only thing I don't like about the car. -
BMW brake pads 11 Aug 2003 (Forum)
-rumour has it that some people don't like buying BMWs that have servicing done by non-main-dealers, but does that extend to brake pads, which are a fairly routine item? Someone said that because the brake pad warning sensor has been activated, I might need a new sensor -is this true? -
Mitsubishi Brakes 6 May 2003 (Forum)
Is it likely to be covered by the warranty? (website says discs/pads excluded) Car by car breakdown refers to brake recall (as dealer demo, presumably work completed) but to reduced brake efficency. Still stops, but vibrates. -
Broken brake lights 7 Jan 2003 (Forum)
I know 2. @#$? off!) I gave up. Is there any authority that can be contacted to get these people to get their brake lights repaired. I suppose not as a result of cost, but the number of times that I have almost crashed when the car/van/lorry in front has braked sharply would mean that I would use the service if available. -
Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 99 1.9 Obscure electrical gremlin when braking - 1 9 May 2009 (Forum)
Bit of history on the car: driven into flood water earlier this year and sucked water up the air intake. Engine replaced (1.9TD XUD) and all seemed well. Two weeks ago the front brake pads were replaced and the rear drums cleaned. We still need to reconnect the rev counter and speedo cables to the instrument cluster. Recently, when braking hard the brake, oil pressure, and STOP warning lights come on, stay on for 2 seconds, and then go out. -
Braking after blow out...Fiesta 7 Jun 2005 (Forum)
My questions: Did the brakes fail because the wheel blew out....or is it more likely that the brakes failed first then the wheel got ruined when I hit the kerb of the island? The brakes did re-engage when I straightened up, and were OK on the 2 mile drive home. -
Prius PHEV, circa 2017 to 2022 model. - Toyota prius braking system 8 Sep 2025 (Forum)
As far as i can find out Prius master cylinder appears to still be connected to the brake pedal directly, though obviously there's more involved than my simple 4x4 because initial and normal braking prioritises regen. I found this part for sale for the particular Prius model of interest and correct years, it looks like a scaled down version of Landcruiser combined brake units which have given sterling service to many models since around 1998 and is still being fitted, unless i'm much mistaken its designed to be operated directly from the brake pedal. -
Ford Ka - Ford Ka: Rattle Rattle/Brakes? 24 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Anyway this last weekend, a rattle has developed which manifests on rough surfaces; it is not too loud (but it depends on road surface). It will go away when the brakes are pressed. Oddly, if on a road which is long straight and rough enough if and when the rattle can be heard it ALWAYS vanishes - even if I simply literally touch the brake pedal and no more put the brake lights on; I mean the car would take a mile to stop.
