  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 13-6-2015 13 Jun 2015 (News)
Toyota dropped the Verso S.    Less than best I know you are an enthusiast of Shell Nitro+ Petrol. I like it for the lubricity but the extra performance appeals as well. Does the modern petrol engine in my Lexus RX take time to adjust the ECU, does it happen instantly or does something else need to be done?
  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 16-5-2015 16 May 2015 (News)
AC, Hatfield A direct replacement would be a Mondeo 2.0SCTI EcoBoost 240 Powershift. But that is not higher. Or a Jaguar XE 2.0 SE petrol automatic at £26,990 on the road. It's difficult to find quick used petrol automatic SUVs because they have mostly been diesels in order to achieve acceptable economy. Ford does a Kuga with its 160PS 1.6 EcoBoost engine and 6-speed torque converter autobox, but I haven't driven it.
  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 9-5-2015 9 May 2015 (News)
I'm on the point of arranging to get a VW Golf SV on Motability, so I'll only have it for 3 years, but find it difficult to decide whether to go for the 1.4 TSI 125 petrol engine or the 1.6 Diesel. I've read one report that suggests the diesel on the SV is not much more economical than the petrol, but others suggest the diesel is far more economical. I would be grateful for your advice.
  • Supermarket petrol: bad; 'proper': good 1 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Well, we all know, because people supposedly with industry knowledge like HJ regularly write it in newspaper columns, that supermarket petrol is cheap for a reason; it is poorer quality than 'proper' petrol from BP, Shell, etc. Isn't it strange that in the current wave of hysteria that Shell and Texaco petrol is alleged to have been affected just as much as supermarket petrol.
  • Supermarket Petrol - Good as branded? 26 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Hi, Is the petrol sold at supermarkets the same quality as branded fuels? Several years ago rumours circulated that supermarket fuel was inferior to that sold by the oil giants, BP, Esso, Shell, etc.. Any one have any thoughts on this?

  • Supermarket Petrol 20 May 2007 (Forum)
Is the petrol delivered to Supermarkets different to other brands? If so what are the chemical differences and what effect do these differences have on the engine? -- Parp, Parp! Note: All Toad posts come with an implied smiley.
  • Supermarket petrol 5 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I appreciate this has been discussed many times before, and the general conclusion is simply that supermarket petrol meets the same standards as branded petrol. However in light of recent events I'm interested in looking at this issue from a couple of different angles: 1. Does the process used in producing supermarket petrol make it more likely that contaminants are introduced?
  • Will supermarket fuel damage my engine? 21 Aug 2024 (Ask HJ)
I have read recently it is not good to use petrol from supermarkets as it does not have the same additives as regular garages and can lead to engine problems...
