  • Low mileage Xantia - am I sane to reject 6 Nov 2004 (Forum)
As usual the steering felt very detached but the barkes were perfect ? no odd noises, powerful and straight line braking. It rode and cornered smoothly. At £2,699 from a garage with a year?s MOT I was impressed but decided not to buy it. It was nearly perfect BUT the clutch worried me , the 4 Michelin tyres looked original and had about 4mm of tread left ?
  • Bullitt Mk 2 is back 6 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I still have to get those lovely deep-set gauges in the dash working and find a way of polishing the dulled plastic dial covers (all suggestions welcome). Also the rear brake-cum-indicator red lights are not very safe or visible compared with today's laser jobs and the garage says convert the backup lights to indicators. We already rebuilt the front end with new track rod ends, shocks etc when I got it.
  • Subaru Forester - First 2 months and 2,000 miles of ownership 27 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Like most of these systems it can be turned off. Only problem to date is a slight steering wheel shake under braking. I reported this shortly after I took ownership and the brake components will be changed under warranty when it is serviced in the next week. Its only the first 2,000 miles in what I hope will be tens of thousands, but so far so good.
  • nissan micra s auto 2001 - advice on what to get sorted? 23 Nov 2024 (Forum)
In the past half-year the repairs and services have been really what anybody would expect with an old car due to wear and tear - a new battery, new brake pads/discs&caliper, 4 new tyres, all fluids replaced (including transmission fluid - it's a cvt), new track rod ends, some jubilee clips to stop an annoying heat shield rattle, new air filter, ac resistor and cabin air filter.
  • 2007 Mini one 1.4 - Bought faulty car from dealership. 16 Aug 2017 (Forum)
The woman also has a friend who is currently in court proceedings with the same dealership. My dad has paid for new alloys, new brake pads and the diagnostics test as well as £1000 for my mums insurance (she's a new driver) and £80 to transfer a private reg onto the car. My dad feels like he's investejd too much money into the car to just return it and get his money back and ideally wants the car to be fixed if possible.

  • Volvo V60 - The first 10,000 miles 25 Jul 2017 (Forum)
    -  The space-saver spare wheel takes up the whole of the under-floor compartment, but at least it was available as an option.  - I don't like the electronic parking brake, which is for some reason down by my right knee, and is also counter-intuitive in being push forward for on, pull back for off.  Give me a proper handbrake any day.  - Checking the engine oil level requires a fiddly exercise with the trip computer: there's no dipstick, which is just plain stupid.
  • Volkswagen Polo GTI 2015 DSG 1.8 TSI - Need to reject / swap car 21 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Since then the car: Keys have been stuck in the ignition even though the steering hasn't locked and it has been securely in parked gear - several times. Brakes are squealing/whilsting consistently, in reverse and coming to a stop. Juddering when stationary. Creaking when moving off or reversing. When off the accelerator in sport mode, it shoots into 3rd gear and loses power, like it's 'choking' (only word I can describe it with!).
  • Audi A3 Sportback - HELP!!!? 2 Jun 2015 (Forum)
For the new car I’ve just spent £300 replacing tyres because they were classed as dangerous and £200’s worth of replacement brake pads and discs waiting to be fitted at hom again because they were dangerously low.   I have 3 options I think.
  • Any - Does Start/Stop Technology Really Save any Money? 23 Jun 2014 (Forum)
I keep my car (AGM) car battery well 'charged up' at all times both summer and winter, by the use of an intelligent external charger purchased from a well known 'german owned' supermarket chain for just £14. Without knowingly or deliberately modifiying my driving style, routes taken or overtaking/braking habits, the uncertainty in mpg measurement appears to be of the same order as the 'benefit' I am trying to measure and is in reality not really any better than what any sensible driver would do, namely to 'switch off the engine' when stationery in any prolonged 'traffic jam' situation.
  • Landrover freelander - total loss non fault accident 19 Sep 2012 (Forum)
So all in all I've had £1150 for a freelander which I paid much more for spent a lot to get all brakes replaced, head gasket, it had 12 months MOT my stereo worth £200 mats worth £70 etc all of which were gone and crushed before I even knew the car had gone from the storage yard where it was initially held.
  • Audi A6 Avant - Car sold with misfire but garage reluctant to help 25 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Recently I had the cambelt changed at an Audi main dealer and their inspection turned up nothing untoward except normal wear and tear on the suspension and brakes. There is one problem that I have yet to get rectified though - the engine misfires when running on LPG. It seems absolutely fine on petrol so I don't think there's anything wrong with the main engine components.
  • BMW 1 Series E81/E87 (2004 - ) - 120D SE : 6000 mile ownership report 20 Oct 2007 (Forum)
BMW diesels may be much smoother, quieter and more refined than VW group units, but they are certainly not as efficient. The car handles, stops and steers quite brilliantly. The brakes are extremely powerful and reassuring, and feel like they have been transplanted from a much larger and more expensive car. The steering is quick and direct, body roll is minimal, understeer is almost absent and, of course there is no torque-steer.
  • Lights Out 13 Dec 2005 (Forum)
It is, therefore, probably safe to assume that there were somewhere in the region of twenty cars between Haven Green and my flat with a faulty light. Twenty unroadworthy cars. And I didn't even check their tyre tread or brake pads. Another sixty penalty points and another few hundred in fines, should a traffic copper have been present. Well, the traffic copper would have had to give a damn in the first place I suppose.
  • VW Touran - A user review 16 May 2004 (Forum)
There is a place to rest your clutch foot, but the centre console is the same for LHD and RHD cars. This means the hand brake is next to the passenger seat, which can mean playing ?touchy feely? with a passengers dangling hand. Apart from this, the controls are clear, although not as tactile as the Polo?s. Equipment levels are good, better than the equivalent Zafira, but I would recommend an SE over an S.
  • Snow experience and skid pan? 13 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Only downside was the lack of shoulder meant they did not dig in too well on tight bends in soft snow thus giving mega understeer even at 10 mph. That was when the ESP cut in , which seemed to apply the inside rear brake and helped to pull the car round just as I was reaching for the handbrake. Magic! In more normal driving the ESP was fairly unobtrusive in service, and kept it all in shape as you crossed from the semi clear areas across the deeper stuff in the middle of the road to overtake somebody stopped, stuck or just creeping at 10/20 kph.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi 2008 DPF and Turbo Woes 25 Mar 2015 (Forum)
Fortunately the garage I took it to were successful and managed to perform a static regen on a rolling road and clear codes/dash lights for £50. Great. 3 weeks ago my car had new brake discs fitted following its MOT. Within 5 days of the MOT I experienced sudden loss of power but no dash lights. I believe this is limp mode but I have also heard limp mode described as not being able to get above 20mph whereas my problem is extremely slow acceleration but it would get to around 50-60mph and will not rev above 3k.
  • Hit and drive off accident A406/A105 - Help 23 Nov 2014 (Forum)
Unfortunately, the pavement is high and there are some rails and small lamp posts. Nowhere to go. The lory pushes me onto the bank/curb. I brake as much as I can but cannot stop quickly enough, jump on the curb and seeing the posts and rail move the car to the right. At that point in time, my car catch the rear end left side of the lory. All this in a split of a second or two.
  • Vauxhall Corsa 1.3TDCI Ecoflex, 2008 - HELP!!! problems within 2 weeks of purchase!! 30 Dec 2011 (Forum)
I checked the service book, and saw the vehicle had only had an interim service, not the major one as I had requested. In fact, the only thing "ticked off" on the list was new front brake pads. I had the headlight bulb replaced at Halfords, who pointed out there was no cover on the headlight unit, which had probably let moisture in and caused the bulb to blow. Sure enough, the next day the new bulb went too.
  • Thoughts on this 80mph idea? 1 Jun 2011 (Forum)
From what ive read there are many interesting points to it. There will always be road safety organisations like Brake (who are essentially a propaganda organisation) who will obviously say this is wrong and more people will die, fact. But of course lower speed limits are in their interest so they cannot be relied upon for a balanced argument and will only provide selective facts.
