  • first impressions of my new Volvo XC60 D4 Auto 19 Apr 2017 (Forum)
This week I am going back to North Yorkshire via Sheffield, so by the time I return home next week I should have a clearer idea about consumption. But for the size and weight I am pleased so far. Once located the electronic park brake is fine to use, it also releases automatically if you set off in D. The telephones for me and SWMBO paired up instantly. The DAB radio is excellent and the sterio also works well through bluetooth from my music library on my i phone.
  • Peugeot 406 HDI poor fuel economy 16 Mar 2017 (Forum)
My car ticks up to 3000rpm so thanks to this forum I now know I *must* replace my timing belt pulley on my next visit to the mechanic. I also know how to fix the stupid "brake fluid low" warning too

  • the end of the road..... 22 Jan 2017 (Forum)
My trusty old Skoda is on the verge of going to the great motorway in the sky!! Apparently a convenience module has failed and the brake lights no longer work, plus it has caused other niggly faults such as sticking locks etc. A new module is about £700 plus fitting, so it's goodnight Vienna! I have ordered a new car but delivery is not until March so I have time to think about how to give it the best possible ending.
  • V reg ford ford 2.0 petrol - LOUD bang from underneath car earlier. 21 Aug 2016 (Forum)
Just moved it off the drive to get other car out and 2 more bang ( quieter this time as I was only about 3/5 MPH ). Seems to happen on braking or on a full lock. If car is stationary I can do lock to lock and I don't get a bang just a very low 'klunk' which might just be some play. The steering wheel before all this did feel a tiny bit 'sticky' when you move from dead centre to slight right before this but has done for the last 500 miles.
  • VW Golf MK7 1.4 TSI Match Edition - Buying new car on Thursday 6 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I have been prevaricating about buying this new Golf for about 3 years now as I was worried about the Electronic Hand brake system. A road test this week completely allayed my fears and found it a delight although was not able to try it on very steep hills. However I was surprise to find that  my dealer in Sevenoaks had exactly the car I wanted in stock in Relfex Silver so bought it there and then and pick it up next week.
  • Ford Fusion 2009 - Automatic "surges" Car a write off. 15 May 2016 (Forum)
An article in Honest John suggests "driving two footed", but I don't  really understand this given the positons of the accelerator and brake. One has to be able to move very slowly in traffic an other circmstances so a slight touch on the accelerator should move the car forward or back just a little  withot mayhem following. Can I seek the advice of readers?
  • SEAT Leon - Seat Leon MK3 2016 Handbrake FAilure 10 May 2016 (Forum)
Luckily i have cctv of the incident showing clearly me applying the handbrake, the moment i take my foot of the brake, turn the engine off and get out of the car, showing it held on the handbrake for over 30 seconds before failing and rolling away.   I have contacted seat UK had  it into the dealer and they couldnt replicate a fault surprise surprise, they have taken a statement and it is going to the volkswagen vehicle safety board tomorrow so they can review it and the video evidence.
  • Ford Granada 1990 2.OL d.o.h.c. - ABS problem 24 Jan 2016 (Forum)
By process of elimination it has been diagnosed that a sticking valve in the abs valve block is causing residual pressure - in one brake line only - that to the right front disc - so that the pads are always in contact with the disc.  Immediately following a few miles drive, it is impossible to turn the r.h. road wheel by hand when jacked up;  if the vehicle is left for an hour or so it is then just possible with considerable effort to move the road wheel round.
  • chevrolet cruze - Car pulling to the left.... not able to find fault 14 Jan 2016 (Forum)
top strut mounts as someone mentioned it could be sticking causing the issue. had all brakes checked for sticking causing the pull. had 4 new tyres on it all same brand and pressures. rotated tires left to right, back to front... makes no difference.   the pull is especially bad when the road is crowning to the side it pulls.... the bigger the crowning the more of a pull.
  • Hire cars 19 Sep 2015 (Forum)
I'm accustomed to proximity devices at the rear, and I believe that they sometimes fit them at the front too, but along the sides ! The car had an electric parking brake !!  If I had known before then I would have asked for a car with a normal handbrake.   It took several days to become used to it; even then I didn't get to try a hill start (the countryside where I was is almost all flat).
  • Renault Scenic 1.5 diesel 2005 model (facelift) - Electrical issues stopping car from starting 2 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Hi Great start to 2013... My Renault Scenic has failed to start. Initially the car stated "low oil pressure" and "hand brake failure" with a loud beep. The engine hardly tried to turn over and instead the engine fan run for ages. The engine after it was left for a while was attempted again and once again I got the fault light as well as practically every fault light going.
  • Ford Sierra (Trike) - Handbrake Inoperable. 28 Jul 2014 (Forum)
I slackened off the handbrake cable and tried to screw the pistons back in, but I couldn't do it and decided to put it all back together, again the pads have lots of meat left on them but the pads I wanted to fit and are genuine Ford and I wondered if they would work better with my rear thunb brake set up. I adjusted up the handbrake and took it for it's MOT, it passed OK. It sat for a few days before going away on it. When I came to move it the handbrake was on solid (on one wheel, only connected to one Cliper on my Trike), I rocked it as sometimes to pads rust to the discs after being washed but it wouldn't move, I slackened off the handbrake cable and it came off, I worked the handbrake lever and adjusted up the cable and it worked OK.
  • Seat Leon 1.6 16v (04 plate) - Rough Idle/Stalling once warm 22 May 2014 (Forum)
I brought the car in February this year, it has tax till October and MOT till Jan 2015. With the clutch on the way out (very high bite), brakes needing to be replaced and a massive chip in the windscreen I am sadly thinking of getting rid already :( Any ideas on what is causing the rough idle/stalling once engine is warm? If I could fix that problem that would be a great start.

  • Toyota Carina E - maintenance and accessories 14 Mar 2014 (Forum)
hi to all,  I have just purchased my grandads car for £300 it has 70,000 miles on it and is a toyota carina e 1.8 cdx on an N reg. it has been sat for 2 years my grandad lives in thailand so it hasnt been touched. sorned obvioulsy and mot expired. charged the battery overnight and ticked it over for ten minutes on my dads advice. started first time. i have not moved it or taken the wheels off so i am unsure if the brakes are ceased hopefully not they should just be sticky. it has been 2 years. a taxi driver told me i should check the clutch not sure how to do this. to my knowledge everything works except the radio/cd. which i can replace. was considering putting in a k&n air filter is this worthwhile. any advice other than try not wrapping it round a tree will be appreciated with thanks. i have read that castrol sms is the best for gearbox oil change which i happily take on board. will consider worthwhil modifications if its worth it for the car. i havent driven for 5 years and the car is 18 yrs old. i would imagine there are things on the market i do not know about and i would imagine there to be technology improvements in 20 yrs since the car was manufactured. i read that platinum spark plugs is an option but as far as i know this car has had bosch.
  • ford focus - careless driving charge 21 May 2013 (Forum)
Basically he pulled a dangerous manoevure on me, cut me up, there was a bit of aggro between us (him brake tapping, me flashing headlights), then after i overtook him, he deliberately sped up, and we made contact as i came back into lane. Minor damage, but i didnt stop as i thought he was trying to ram me off the road. we reported each other, but he got in there first and i didnt catch his reg plate.
  • Where do you buy your car parts.. 4 Jan 2013 (Forum)
A good friend of mine who still works in the dealer network was talking to me about parts quality...I know from experience genuine brake pads in the case of my car last longer than aftermarket, but at a cost. He was wondering how he can target people who buy parts for their older models themselves, but get them into a dealership... My question to all is, do you buy purely on price or purely on quality?

  • BMW 5 Series E60 - Auto gearbox and other settings instructions 26 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I'm also keen to hear what the 'DSC' button on the fascia in front of the shifter does (on the same cluster as the heated seat and parking sensor controls - I think it's DSC, will check tonight to make sure), and whether this has any impact on shift patterns or is more to do with traction control through the braking system. I'm not aware that the car has any adaptive suspension, so keen to hear if there's a 'sporty' way to set the car up.  I'm really just hoping to learn more about the car, as there's no suppporting documentation to refer to - thankfully I found I-Drive a doddle, but suspect Ill be back on here with questions when I can't figure out hoew to change a blown bulb!
