Last night's journey home 10 Aug 2004 (Forum)
And while we're on the subject, that chevron-ed 4x4 on the hard shoulder helping the girl in the corsa change her wheel wasn't even a police car, it was a motorway patrol. So there was no need for you all to slam your brakes on and have a look was there? Hats off to one of the other patrols who was moving people over into the empty inside lane on the M42 as well. A special mention for that caravan driver that decided to share my lane at the last minute as we joined the A34. -
Omega noise 9 Aug 2004 (Forum)
There is also a small amount of judder noticable very occassionally , which is magnified sometimes when braking gently at slow speeds. The noise is hard to describe. It isn't a harsh noise, more a kind of "resonance" noise (I mean by that the kind of noise when something isn't spinning true, or two things are spinning at nearly the same speed, so the sound goes in and out of sync - sheesh - hard to describe - I know what I mean!!). -
Was it worth it? 9 Aug 2004 (Forum)
He then slammed on filled the gap between me and the Landrover and proceeded to sit on the Landy's bumper for the next few miles, brake lights coming on every few seconds. We then came to a straight section, because I left a decent gap I could see round the corner down the straight - nothing coming - the mad overtaker stayed behind the Landrover! -
Astra 1.4 H reg - fuel pipe cut 3 May 2004 (Forum)
Hello My Astra 1.4 (H reg)has had its fuel piping cut with a stanley knife and all the fuel from my petrol tank has disappeared. The piping runs under the car on the driver side next to the brake cable. It is obviously a robbery of petrol from my car and I was completely flabbergasterred when I spotted petrol pouring out from underneath the car. I managed to get the car home with a friend towing me. -
Vectra handbrake and welding 25 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Has anyone come across this with Vectras? (The dealer said that \"this can happen after long journeys when the brakes get hot, then as they cool they shrink, thus releasing the handbrake\". It was at that point that I wondered whether this was a car dealer or a dealer in exotic substances...) This happened in January and the car is still with a Vauxhall repair shop in Scotland. -
Best Car - Worst Car 23 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Worst car I ever had: Fiat Regata Weekend (Estate) 1989 G - so called because it took several weekends to try to figure out why the hand brake would never work. I had to keep adjusting the 'self adjusters'. It failed nearly every MOT on the handbrake. It never passed an MOT first time. It had the charisma of a trench block. It leaked rainwater when I first had it due to a manufacturing defect in the bodyshell. -
VR6 bearing probs - VW dealer negligent? 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
In July of this year, I had the front wheel bearings and brakes replaced at a VW dealer , on my 1996 Golf VR6. The cost was nearly £400. Today, I have taken the car to the National Autocentre near where I work on the Isle of Wight for an MOT. It has failed due to the front near side bearing being (and I quote) \"SO DANGEROUS that we don\'t recommend that the car is driven, sir\". -
Mercedes CLS concept car goes production 23 Nov 2003 (Forum)
In production form, the CLS Coupe will come with V6 and V8 engines, and will feature Airmatic pneumatic suspension, seven-speed automatic transmission, Sensotronic brake control, bi-xenon active headlights with see-round-corners function and latest-gen climate control. The German giant reckons that since the CLS combines the shape of a coupe with the convenience of a saloon, it offers more added value than other coupes. -

Old banger sailed through MOT! 2 Oct 2003 (Forum)
My poor mate just spent over £500 on his M reg 106 to get that to pass, and because of health reasons my car's hardly used and is stood most of the time, usually guaranted to seize brakes, and knacker all parts. And yes I know that anything could go wrong with it during the next week but that's normal car life. So whilst the car's as good as worthless in value to others it's priceless to me. -
Customers...Why??? 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Why do customers complain about the poor quality of their car/cost of parts etc. When it was them that bought the car in the first place? Why do customers complain their brakes/steering/lights etc. now don't work, when all I did was remove the a/c service port caps, fill the system with gas, and put them back on again? Why do customers complain when you charge them a nominal amount for checking out suspected compressor noise, when all it was is the exhaust heat shield rattling as the idle speed changes when the a/c is switched on? -
Cyclist's paranoia? 8 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The noise of a small car at maximum revs coming from behind us made me take an extra glance in the mirror. It showed a green Citroen AX approaching at speed apparently coming straight at us. I braked and was pulling in behind Mrs H. when the car passed within a yard of me doing, I guess, over 60. I was so incensed with this lack of courtesy and the driver's disregard for Highway Code Rules 139, 188 that I gave him a V sign. 50 yards up the road, the AX slithered to a halt with 3 wheels locked. -
Toyota servicing - is this reasonable? 20 Jun 2003 (Forum)
They want £118.50 for the service and another £50 to change the coolant which is due at the 3 year mark. According to the book, a 3 year service in an intermediate comprising oil and filter change with brake, tyre and light inspections. Also, as it's 30k there is an air filter change. To me, £118 for this sounds totally unreasonable - the parts are unlikely to cost more than £20 and surely it's not going to take 2 hours to do? -
New Speed Limits 21 Apr 2003 (Forum)
On motorways, Autocar says it\'s commonplace to find people averaging 80mph so why not set that as the limit? The 70mph limit dates back to 1965, when cars had none of the electronic braking aids available today. Their own tests showed a modern Mondeo was able to stop 22 metres shorter than a 1960s Cortina. Thie suggestion is that we follow France\'s lead and have an 80mph limit in dry, clear conditions, dropping to 65mph in rain, ice or fog. -
Vectra ('01 / Y) SRi 2.2 Cam chain 23 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Still, Saturday 7th December, travelling south on the M6 at 70 with the wife & kids, the whole lot dies on me. no engine response, no power steering, no power assisted brakes....So, I eventually get the thing onto the hard shoulder. The AA come out and tell me there is no compression. I end up paying out 170 quid to a recovery firm (My AA cover only was for roadside rescue). -
Daihatsu Charade 1.0 Expert needed. 6 Nov 2002 (Forum)
An exterior polish with T-Cut will have already helped alot in that context. It will be going in soon to sort out sweaky brakes so any help would be great. Thanks guys. Paul C -
Salutory tale 6 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Paid for service @ non franchise specialist, and asked him to do rear disc and pads at the same time, as main agent had told me they needed doing. He told me fronts were also now due. Last week brake warning light starts to come on, accompanied by three musical chimes. Ah, thinks I ; indicator for pads. Purchase set to change. Does it have a wear indicator? say suppliers Must have, say I, theyr'e telling me its time to change. -
Pothole damage, KDS's what next 6 Aug 2002 (Forum)
The steering feels very light and is also very sensitive to the road service in that it follows the road camber considerably. On braking around corners the car steering pulls against you. The car cannot really be driving unless using both hands as it seems to pull against you. The local dealer seems to think it's me but I don't think so. -
VW Polo, no service history, what to do? 2 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Flush radiator and engine block, fill with G11 or G12 (my preference for longer-life) VW-approved coolant 8. Replace brake fluid 9. Check cambelt, replace even if only slightly worn Does this look reasonable? Is there anything else I should get checked and/or replaced? cheers Paul -
Insurance - to claim or not 13 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Repaired, I might get £2,000 for it as a private sale on a good day. I've recently spent quite a bit on bringing it back up to a decent standard (new shocks, brake discs and pads, distributor, front wishbone bushes and silencer box). So what I would like ideally is for the insurers to pay me the insured value, less the salvage value and excess, and let me keep the car.
