  • Jaguar S-Type LHD - Jaguar S Type Indicator switch 10 Jul 2010 (Forum)
On this occasion I had one such idiot and not only did he join the roundabout after me but he came round the outside and cut across me as I tried to move across to exit. Due to my braking he did not hit me but with my wheels on half lock (turning anti-clockwise round the r/b) I flashed him and sounded the horn. The combination of flashing with the wheel turning left has caused this problem.
  • Ford Focus MK2 05 1.6 Ghia - Weird Handbrake issue 1 Jul 2010 (Forum)
So here I was thinking maybe it had come loose, so I took all the center console out to get a better look, not quite sure whats happened, but if I pull the cable by hand I can hear the rear brakes squeak a bit so I dont think theres a cable break?   Anyway a pic might help explain it better, any help is much appreciated.   I know the square bit where the cable is joined should be in the metal part of the handbrake, it fits in there quite snug, but how is there that much excess (look how high the handbrake is)?
  • Last time you were lucky ?? 9 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Yesterday, coming back fromTolworth toweres A3 TO Weybridge, all was fine at 55 in the middle lane when a car doing 35 overtook a slower car but pulled out with out looking or indication -braking was not the best option as I carry a heavy load, the only other option was, the outside lane, that section for 200 yards actually looked OK !! it wasn't - how I missed the central reservation, the offending car and everyone else I've no idea - did a 360+ and eventually finshed facing the wrong way on the inside lane - thanks to the skill of other drivers who managed to take evasive action - that was a fortunate result
  • The MOT 15 Dec 2009 (Forum)
He didn't say anything about the stress crack across the front number plate although its not bad enough that it can't be read properly. He didn't check the spare either. Everything else passed, lights, brakes, emissions, horn, wipers (the tailgate wiper wasn't checked). He asked me to remove the satnav sucker from the bottom of the windscreen however because he told me he could fail it because its deemed an obstruction.
  • Honda Civic UK (2006 - ) - 07 2.2 Judder when accelerating with some left loc 10 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I'm pretty sure it wasn't on the clutch 'take up' either, the traction control wasn't intervening (relatively gentle acceleration) and I wasn't braking. Also the road surfaces were reasonably smooth. The car has been largely trouble free and is still under warrantee so I've booked it in to the dealer but would appreciate any thoughts on what might cause such symptoms. - CV joint, Driveshaft perhaps ?
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 99 1.25 Gearbox or clutch problem? 25 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I believe this in itself is not a major problem, but more recently, I've noticed: - trying to shift into 3rd or 4th gear can be hit and miss, with grinding / crunching - the clutch pedal sometimes feel as if the spring has gone (that is, it feels loose until 1-2 inches from the bottom) before I could select a gear - selecting reverse almost always reaquiring further attempts (pressing clutch pedal down more) and also crunches Of more concern is the last few hundred yards from my drive home on Friday evening - I had trouble selecting any of the gears, but eventually managed to find second. If of any relevance, the clutch pedal sometimes feel that it's rubbing / clicking against the brake pedal (mechnically, internally). I got the car checked out yesterday, and was advised the clutch seems to be OK, except maybe the hydraulics. They suggested it's most likely to be a gearbox problem.
  • USA ABS report for data 1995 to 2007 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Analysis of US accident data Abtract Statistical analyses based on data for calendar years 1995 to 2007 from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the General Estimates System (GES) of the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) estimate the long-term effectiveness of antilock brake systems (ABS) for passenger cars and LTVs (light trucks and vans) subsequent to the 1995 launch of public information programs on how to use ABS correctly. ABS has close to a zero net effect on fatal crash involvements.
  • Renault Laguna (1994 - 2001) - 98 1984 knocking from front axle after tyre change 22 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Hi I have a Laguna Estate 2.0L RXE Limited Edition. The one with leather interior and rear brake discs rather tha drums) I recently had all 4 tyres changed. The fitter put the rotation on the front left tyre the wrong way round, so switched this with the rear right one. After getting it back on the road i noticed a knocking sound coming from the front axle getting louder between 20 and 30 at a specific point as the axle turned.
  • Skoda Octavia II (2004 - ) - Long term caretaking 17 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Body work should be fine as galvanised, anything else to keep eye on longterm apart from usual wear and tear items, (tyres, brakes etc) Got a bit of a tear in me eye for the old motor going to scrappage, 14 yr old petrol Galaxy 120k original clutch, engine never been cracked open, but needs to much to pass next MOT, needs about a grand spent on it, plus Skoda gave me 3.5k on scrappage, too good to refuse really.
  • 3 year Audi servicing deal is not what it appears 29 Jul 2009 (Forum)
When I bought my A3, I was offered and accepted ,what appeared at the time ,to be a very good service deal. For £250 , the offer included two oil changes , a brake fluid change and an "inspection service". These had to be completed within 3 years or 36,000mles, whichever occurred first. The car was on the longlife service option from new. This is the flexible service regime where the use to which the car is put determines, to some extent at least, when an oil change is due.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 01 1.8 Fault lights driving me crazy! 21 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The reader can reset the fault light and then everythng is fine. I found a tip that if you turn on the ignition (not start the engine!) with brake and accelerator both down you get a flashing readout on the fault light which I do. I think it reads 10, 1, 1, 5, 1 but I have no idea if this means anything or how to interpret it. Help!
  • BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 01 3.0 Some advice... 14 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The paperwork was okay, and seemed to have been regularly serviced, although it seemed to have missed a brake fluid change one of the designated intervals. I requested that the car was started as soon as I saw the car, and leave it running while I checked over it. After about 8 or 9 minutes, the temperature rose beyond the midpoint.
  • Volkswagen - excellent service from main dealer 16 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Dropped the car off at 7.30 am (useful for me) and was given the keys to a 09 Golf estate. Had a call at about 10 am to ask if I wanted the (recommended) brake fluid change and air con service inc 'refresh'. I said yes to both. Picked the car up at 4.30pm as arranged. They had also replaced a rear wheel bearing and the driver's seatbelt under warranty (following test drive, not at my request).
  • Buying my first car 20 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Garage had the "brain" sorted out at a Nissan dealer and they gave it a health check which was alll clear apart from the brakes which the garage say they will sort this out. Also seemed to have a pretty full service history. Bit worried this one is a bit too good to be true, seems a lot of car for the money. Would like the bigger engine for motorway driving.
  • 5-6 year ownership stick or twist? 14 Mar 2009 (Forum)
In 2003 I purchased a new corolla, and have been pleased with its reliabily to date( incidently find myself needing a garage visit for seized door lock/ stubborn bulb connector I cannot access) Its probably worth no more than ? £4.5k now, so has depreciated £8K, and cost about £2.5k in servicing/tax/tyres/brakes. Question is, is the likely increased cost of ownership over the next 4-5 years sufficiently offset by the lower depreciation? is the increased risk and inconveinience of garage visits worth the extra outlay for a new warranted vehicle?
  • Vauxhall Corsa D (2006 - ) - 07 1.7D Vibrating/Shaking when stationary 12 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Not sure if this made a difference or not, as I didn't then stop for another 15 mins of driving, but when i parked up the vibrating had ceased. Please note: Pressing the clutch down, pressing or releasing the brakes all make no difference. It still judders unless moving or revving. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Unless I take it into the dealership with a clear idea of the fault, I'm worried they'll just do the 'can't find anything wrong sir' like they did with the power issue I had when we first got the car that just required a software upgrade to solve (but took 3 visits for them to figure out).
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - Idiot question - disposing of a car. 12 Feb 2009 (Forum)
The question is this: my trusty R reg 1.4 Corsa Breeze has finally given up the ghost. While technically still servicable for a month or so, it's got a fuel leak, the brakes are wearing badly and the estimate is that it'll take at least £500 to get it through its next MOT, and other factors (rusting bodywork) will mean it almost certainly won't get through next years.
  • Peugeot 406 (1996 - 1998) - 1996 1.9 Engine Management Warning light 5 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I have an intermittent fault that is rapidly becoming less intermittent and pretty dangerous - orange engine management warning light comes on with a big "stop" sign. The dangerous part is the accompanying loss of power, steering, brakes, the lot, when I'm slowing down and the clutch is in. It doesn't matter if the car's warm or cold. Today, whilst driving round auto-electricians and mechanics for advice (none have any idea what's up), it has juddered a bit before cutting out or threatening to, in second or third gear.
  • Volkswagen Golf VI (2009 - ) - Shall I, or shan't I? 3 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Also, some of the bright, shiny alloys have been replaced with a funny greyish two tone alloy finish thus making brake dust less obvious, I suppose. I was also surprised to see that there wasn't any fancy underbonnet engine cover but -instead the underside of the bonnet lid had sound-proofing padding. Thus the engine now looks a bit of a mess with everything visible to the prying eye.
  • Reporting speeding bus to bus co. 27 Nov 2008 (Forum)
BTW my indicated speed was 65 on the speedo and 62 on the sat-nav. It wasnt so much that id been looking at first when I was following the bus, more that he was braking quite hard into corners and on a very wet road so I started paying more attention. He also went through a 30 section in a village at atleast 40 odd given the rate he was leaving me behind, but since I would have to break the limit to keep up, I hung back and caught him up later on in the bends.
