  • VW Polo - Car reliability 30 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Fortunately I was a mile from home, so went to fetch the spare key, which worked. I swapped the battery, no joy. On two occasions the car applied emergency braking for no apparent reason, both times on a bend. It was frightening. On 3 or 4 occasions the radio has refused to turn off when the car was turned off and no key in the ignition. I had to keep the on off button pressed in until it rebooted.
  • VW Tiguan 1.4 s BlueMotion - Advice re: Faulty Injector - Wear and Tear? 4 Jun 2018 (Forum)
The warranty has the usual non-payment of wear and tear clause and indeed I’ve not bothered them when replacing front struts and brakes but I’m wondering if I have a case concerning the injector because I’m thinking that if it’s normal wear and tear then surely all the injectors would fail at the same time. I’m asking for your thoughts on this because the warranty company will want me to go through their garage and if they refuse to pay then I’m left with a hefty bill whereas I could use my local technician who will be much cheaper.
  • any - get that salt off 19 Apr 2018 (Forum)
Suggest anyone who wants to keep their cars long term has a good poke nose underneath with a view to washing the winter salt off and touching up any areas that look grim, we've seen several winter's worth of salt put down this time and what it does will be staring you in the face if you get under and have a good look. Don't forget that salt will have done it's worse in the brake calipers too, so get those cleaned and lubed up too, or expensive lessons will be learned when the calipers start seizing up come summer. I've been under our two yesterday and again today, doing what's necessary, i had a new aftermarket sump guard (now fitted) in my garage for my old Landcruiser as the OE one was looking grim before the winter, but left it on for the season as the salting started early,  the amount of new rust on it was shocking, they are a poor effort anyway not a patch on what Toyota used to bolt underneath on previous models.
  • New car dilemma 10 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I am currently considering changing my car, and I am in the fortunate position of having around £30K to spend, but wish to buy 2nd hand, as I have no interest in paying vast amounts of depreciation on a brand new vehicle.  The cars I am considering are Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake and the Audi A7/S7 and I might consider the BMW 5 Series Touring. I want something that is good looking, luxurious and has a reasonable degree of practicality about it, hence these cars are at the top of my list.
  • Swerving to avoid a crash (theoretical) 17 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Me or the guy who pulled out in front of me (car 1)?    The country lane is about 3 cars wide and knowing that you've braked as hard as you can and do not have hope of stopping and there is a high hedge and no open ground to your left, are you meant to avoid the accident by swerving around car 1's front end and risk crashing into car 2, or are you meant to deliberately crash into the side of car 1 knowing you'll both be badly hurt (and that you or car 1 could still end up in the path of car 2)?
  • Vauxhall Corsa C - Corsa Comfort 1.0 2001 problem 17 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Once I go to A or M roads , there are problems. At speeds more than 40 miles, the steering is not stable when changing lanes or applying brakes to reduce speed, the car drifts a bit, and due to my holding the steering it comes back on course. The steering wheel is about few degrees, about 3 degrees let us say, to the left at zero speed. When I start the car, it makes some tapping noises as if some metal is touching another.
  • Ford Fiesta - failed MOT questions 22 Jul 2017 (Forum)
Rear engine mount is cracked and needs replacing. Driver's side wing mirror is broken (blooming other drivers)  Brake pads and corroded discs, front only. Could someone please let me know what they think it would cost. I've priced up the parts and I'm assuming none of them are complicated jobs. The garage told me that after replacing the linkage, they would need to strip down and rebuild the entire suspension system and re align the steering too.
  • Any - Track Rod End Grease Choice 6 May 2017 (Forum)
I've never heard rubber compatibility mentioned in this context, or for CV joint boots, where I'd think it might also be relevent.  Though not as critical as with brakes, I'd expect mineral-oil base greases to attack rubber.  Do they use oil-resistant rubber (viton etc) for these components, or are they just accepted to have a limited life partly due to oil attack?
  • All credit to VW 12 Apr 2017 (Forum)
Anyway, I received a call from same receptionist later on to tell me that the car was ready and that they had stripped down and cleaned the rear brakes free of charge after my report of a sticking handbrake which was nice of them considering I'd negotiated £60 discount on the job in the first place to match a quote from a local backstreet Joe. They really are top notch and much brand loyalty is dependent on good service from dealers.
  • Mondeo 2014 2.0 TDCi 140 ZBE - Mondeo TDCi - next 50k miles? 1 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Thus far all servicing has been done at the main dealer and all has been well. All I have done is changed the tyres once and the rear brakes last month. However, I'm pretty sure that the next 50k miles are when the problems can arise and I'm keen to prevent them as best I can. I do a Yorkshire - Kent run every few weeks - about 3.5hrs each way with no holdups: A1 - A14, M11, M25, M20 and this accounts for the majority of the miles.

  • Honda Civic - Honda servicing plan 6 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Having said all that the service deal was very reasonable at £580 or so for four annual services including for example brake fluid and air filters every two years. To ensure you get the right level of service you have paid for the answer is to get them to set you up on time and mileage servicing from day 1.
  • Renault Clio - Handbrake loose - caused by 'repairs' garage 29 Jan 2016 (Forum)
My car was serviced and drums fine in Sept 2015.   I don't do any heavy driving, no harsh braking and I do not park on any steep hills with handbrake on.   I'd like some opinions and advice please...  I'm not mechanically minded and I'm female so I feel the garage think they are going to just take the **** and make me pay for a repair I don't need.
  • Nissan Micra 61 plate - 1st gear problem after clutch change 18 Dec 2015 (Forum)
This wasn't a problem problem prior to clutch change, when I could change down easily into 1st when at low speeds (under 5mph) I know there is a debate about whether you should use your gears or brakes to stop but I was taught to block change down from 4th to 2nd and then change into 1st gear just before you stop, ready to move off again. As I said it wasn't a problem prior to clutch change. Anyone know what the problem might be?
  • Chamfered speed "bumps" - worst design ever? 20 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Warning signs usually tell us to slow down to 30 or even 20 km/h on approach, but as the road speed is usually 50 before and after there is a lot of slowing down and speeding up, so brakes and suspension are subject to more wear and fuel is wasted.   Where conditions "permit", some drivers even take to swerving right round the bumps, regardless of solid white lines: a similar disregard to speed limits is quite widespread.
  • Honda Civic 2001-2005 (52 plate) 1.4 petro manual - Gearbox/bearing problem - is she dead? 13 Sep 2015 (Forum)
I would describe myself as an enthusiastic DIY type with a Haynes manual in hand! I do the full service, have changed most suspension and brake parts over the years, done the timing belt, electrical work etc. I have a decent set of tools but no dedicated garage/lift/workshop to do this in - I do it everything on street!   What do you guys reckon?
  • Mercedes-Benz SLK - Mercedes Extended Warranty - Worth it? 17 Aug 2015 (Forum)
The warranty looks to be pretty comprehensive as follows:- Tier 1 Covers all mechanical and electrical components of your vehicle for defects -  except  the items listed below: All service items which will require periodic replacement Any item that has worn out rather than suffered from a defect after 100,000 miles Auxiliary drive belts Brake friction material and discs/drums Light bulbs and fuses Diesel glow plugs Reprogramming/software updates Hoses, hose clips and connectors Glass All hinges Interior/Exterior trim Wheels and tyres Wiper blades Body work/body seals   Does this look good value?
  • Mercedes 350Sl 2003 (R230) - Mercedes Command 2.0 Sat Nav 3 May 2015 (Forum)
Half an hour later additional warming lights for ABS, Brakes etc… came on and the powered steering stopped. Obviously the Alternator was not assisting the electrical power required to run the vehicle.   I had a new Alternator fitted, and the warning notifications cancelled.
  • Ambulance T-Junction Crash - who's blameworthy? 30 Mar 2015 (Forum)
I'm just looking for clarification to who is blameworthy? I was clearly visible, the third party had much more space to brake than needed at 30mph and I was stationary past the giveway line.
