alternative tech - KERS for the road 5 Sep 2012 (Forum)
On most journeys, a bit of sliproad acceleration or spooling up for an overtake is the only time one gets anywhere near full throttle. To my mind, the electric motor would replace the starter, alternator, allow brakes to be smaller not to mention allowing a smaller overall engine & transmission. The weight penalty would surely not be too great. And instead of huge Lithium Ion cells under the seats weighing things down, the limited amount of electricity stored could be taken care of with smaller battery / flywheel / capacitors. -
1.4 - Fiesta TDCI - another change 13 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I was wondering what improvements does the latest 1.4 version have over mine not that I’m bothered the latest version is going to be replaced again later this year when the revamped version comes up. I doubt very much it will have stop start and brake regeneration otherwise the claimed figures would be much bigger. I get between 57-61mpg and the engine has yet to be run in. -
Keep the Octavia or replace? 21 Jun 2012 (Forum)
Its done 112k, and the turbo whistle appears to be getting louder, theres an issue with one of the rear shocks 'wriggling' over uneven surfaces, juddery brakes, all discs and pads nead replacing all round. And at the most recent service I was told that a few fault codes are coming up, and have come up again since being reset. They're the glow plugs showing up faults, and wiper motor faults to name a few, the airbag light is on too. -

Nissan Pathfinder - clutch 12 Apr 2012 (Forum)
The guy who services my car is mystified and the same goes for me, having a fair bit of personal experience of working on cars in the past. He recently tried bleeding the brakes - I sat in the car to depress the pedal when asked. The engine was not running during the procedure but, the moment I touched the pedal, it went to the floor on its own. When asked to take my foot off the pedal, it would not return and took considerable force to lift the pedal with my foot. -
BMW 320i M Sport Touring - Catalytic Converter - Cleaning Additives? 11 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Just put my 08 plate 320i M Sport Touring into my local BMW specialist for a regular brake fluid service. Only had the car 3 months and had experienced a few misfires and generally sluggish acceleration. Car had done 33000 miles when purchased and I don't do a huge mileage - about 7000/year. -
Ford Focus - INSURANCE QUESTION 1 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Hi, I recently left my hand brake off and the car rolled into a parked car. I have a trustworthy garage who has told me the other cars damage can be repaired for about 800-1000. First garage quoted 1300 That is if I pay up front. If they claim on my insurance I would't expect the mechanic to do the job as cheap as possible as its not my money he's saving. -
Mk4 1999 Golf Gt Tdi - Mk4 1999 Golf Gt Tdi (110) - Unknown Problem 20 Dec 2011 (Forum)
However driving home it had the same problem of not picking up speed as it should and not going past 80mph (unless down hill, however it slows down when going up hill) I have had the brakes checked from 'formula one' incase they were sticking but the mechanic said they were fine... I am very confused as I dont know what the problem could be nor do the mechanics and nor does the computer (diagnostics check). -
Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 07 1.6 dampness/water leak into lhs boot 12 Nov 2011 (Forum)
After heavy rain it isn't soaking but just feels damp, a hell of a frustrating issue as other than this the car is ok. The service reception told me that the 3rd rear brake light fills with water and then runs round and down, think she was a little mixed up there. I unscrewed the two screws that fix the rear LH side light clusters in place, I couldn't remove the lens but saw a load of dead leaf and grime trapped underneath the black plastic strip which houses the two screws, any one help please. -
Any - Stupid excuses after a crash 17 Oct 2011 (Forum)
The HGV 's driver got out and his imediate response was "sorry pal, it just slid." Now call me cynical, but a "professional" driver should know that on a wet road your braking distance will be vastly increased, therefore you should increase the distance between you and the car in front, so this struck me as a very poor excuse for some completely incompetent motoring. -
VW PASSAT 2006 2.0TFSI - VW Passat 2006 ABS unit failed 13 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Hi Guys, I've got a VW passat 2006 2.0tfi and the other week i had a "Electronic Parking brake" fault on the car, took it to VW and they diagnosed it £80 later to be the ABS unit has failed. They said they are going to try and replace it under warranty, even though its way past the warranty period, but i see this as they know of the problem. -
galaxy 1.9tdi PD - loud rattling from PD diesel engine 17 Aug 2011 (Forum)
The strange thing is when im driving it it never disappears, idling or under load. Even after an italian tuneup. It DOES however disappear when engine braking, which is wierd. I only just serviced it about a month ago and used dealer recommended oil along with a genuine filter. I have had the rocker cover off and cant see any immediate wear on the followers or damage on the camshaft lobes, although some of the lobe edges seem sharp. -
HiQ Criticise MOT Change Proposals 16 Aug 2011 (Forum)
’ HiQ is calling for car owners whose cars have failed their MoT to send their local MPs photographic evidence of dangerous parts such as worn brakes and tyres. It is also compiling a 'chamber of horrors' with which to lobby ministers. Obtained from WhatCar -
Ford Fiesta Encore 1998 1.25 - MOT Advisory Items how much could they cost to fix 3 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Nearside and Offside rear (axle) trailing arm rubbers deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement. Nearside rear brake juddering slightly. Both front wishbone rubbers coming away from housing. Passenger side rear handbrake does not lock. As it's been almost a year since the last MOT I think I'm going to have to get these problems fixed in order for me to sell my car for a decent price. -
Insurance renewal notice disaster 14 Mar 2011 (Forum)
My friend never received a renewal notice from her broker (who had handled her insurance for many years) and was driving at a roundabout when the car in front abruptly braked and she bumped into it. It then turned out that my friend had unwittingly been uninsured for a short while. The other driver put in a large claim to the Motor Insurers Bureau, mainly for alleged whiplash injury since damage to her very old car was minimal. -
Alloy wheels seized on. 5 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Whenever I buy a car that has alloy wheels, one of the first things I do is to remove the wheels and apply copper grease to both the face that mates with the brake disc/drum and to the spigot diameter, so that corrosion of the wheels at a later date does not cause the wheels to become seized on. So, shortly after I acquired my latest 16 months old Focus, I got out the grease, jacked up one corner of the car and proceeded to remove the wheelnuts. -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol 1.6 - 'Using' coolant... normal? 30 Jan 2011 (Forum)
I've been looking to purchase a reasonable estate car for under £1,000 and today viewed a very nice Astra 1.6. (16 valve ecotec engine). It seemed to tick all the right boxes: FSH including cambelt, good body, 120k, newish brakes and tyres, drives and sounds just like new, £900. So far so good. But the very decent seeming seller volunteered that the car 'uses' a little coolant (but with no sign of any leak) but that his mechanic had told him this was normal for an Astra. -

overtaking on a bend 30 Oct 2010 (Forum)
This is a B road. Basically I did everything I could to avoid a collision but he did not even attempt to brake, I dont know why. I am still suffering with injury but the solicitors are now saying 70/30. I just dont get it. I wasnt speeding, I was doing half the speed limit on this road. I had my lights on. -
Nissan X-Trail (2001 - 2007) - 03 2.5 Auto stalling problem 11 Jun 2010 (Forum)
The car start OK in the morning OK but after 2-3 mins it cuts outs if you take your foot off the throttle. You loose the brakes and the steering is hard, so a bit risky. It can be a bit hard to restart. It only stalls in drive just after the temperature gauge is showing normal temperature and you take your foot of the throtle.
