  • How Does One use an Automatic Gearbox? 27 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Questions is on a motorway or speeds above say 60mph which gear does noe use. At traffic lights do you leave the car in D with the foot on the brake or put it into neutral. Whats 1 and 2 for. What gear would you use for a traffic light drag race (not that he would ever do that) Any other suggestions of how to drive practically using an autobox?
  • Auto Express Tyre Test 22 Jul 2006 (Forum)
After watching the video I couldn't help but wonder what effect the tread depth markers have on wet road braking at these sorts of speeds. I'm aware that there's tread between the said markers but they must have some effect. It seems to me that they are like having mini bald patches on your tyres. It would be interesting to conduct the same tests with these removed to prove/disprove their effects.
  • Ford KA burning smell!! 15 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Last night she drove it home from work (less than a mile) and the actual wheel hub burnt my fingers when I touched it! It seems to drive fine, and the brakes (recently serviced and passed MOT) show no sign of fade, or squeaks, squeels or other unpleasant noises. Doesn't appear to pull to one side or other when driving. I'm going to take the wheel off - what should I be looking for?
  • Buying my company E-class Merc 16 Jun 2006 (Forum)
It's on a 53 plate (November) and will have done 85,000 miles by the time I take ownership in August (80,000 now). I've tended to drive it quite hard and I've gone through a reasonable number of tyres and brake pads, however it has been regularly serviced by my local MB dealer. The fleet company are offering it to me for £16,300. Questions: - Is this a good deal? - Anything I should begin to worry about at this age/mileage?
  • Zafira Road Wheel Bolts & Tools Required 26 May 2006 (Forum)
Hopefully an easy one for forum members. I have recently been removing my wheels to clean and remove built up brake dust on my alloys, however, when I use the tools supplied by Vauxhall, I have to stand on the tool to undo/remove the road wheels and having looked at the wheel nuts, I have noticed that I am starting to round off the tops.
  • Tyre test reported in Which? magazine 4 Mar 2006 (Forum)
magazine ranks tyre quality thus (top five from each group, with scores): 17" Michelin Pilot Sport ("best on test", equal best on wear) 73% Bridgestone Potenza 71% Continental SportContact3 70% BFGoodrich G-Force Profiler 68% Pirelli Pzero Nero 68% 14" Bridgestone Turanza ER300 ("best on test", best overall on wet braking) 70% Pirelli P6 65% Nokian NRHi 64% Continental EcoContact 3 63% Vredestein Hi-Trac 63% Michelin and Bridgestone prices knock them out of the best-buy stakes, but shop around, of course. No surprises there, then.
  • Sisters 51 1.2 Punto - never serviced 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Been trying to get my sister to have her car serviced, its never had anything done to it since she purchased it about 4 years ago. Just checked under the bonnet and found the brake fluid bottle almost totally empty, she has just brought some DOT4 from Halfords, assume its the right stuff. Anyway, I am trying to allow her to let me service it, any issues with oil filter access or the drain plug in Punto's?
  • Escort 1994 1.6 16v 13 Feb 2006 (Forum)

  • Sell it or service it? 27 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Is it worth getting the work done at a non franchise service centre like Nationwide? I have sourced the brake parts at £100! No SAAB specialist independents near where she lives. Is it worth spending the £1500 at a main dealer and keeping the car indefinitely. Is it best to shift it now, as is, on a private sale and sold as seen with 3 month's MOT?
  • Corsa Problems 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
There is a low 'hissing' noise that seems to be coming from the drivers footwell. Normally and sharp jump on the brakes stops this, but I'm unable to find out where and why it is doing this. 2. There seems to be a strange smell coming into the car. It reminds me of petrol fumes. It doesn't happen all the time, but is very noticeable when it does.
  • Renault service 2 Jan 2006 (Forum)
160(mugged by Renault)the other problem ABS light sometimes come on .The problem was a section of the ABS wiring had been repaired at some time with electricians connector block on one side and through crimps on the other.Themechanic had never seen such a botch job in his life, when I told him it had only been in Renault garages in the UK during its life as a lease car, he found it hard to believe no matter who was the culprit can you understand the mentality of someone who would do that to the brakes as a repair. Also the so called reputal garage where it was bought with its 60 point safety check.Needless to say I shall be having words when I return to the UK.
  • 406 V6 coil (again) 24 Nov 2005 (Forum)
s only a ten minute job once the right faulty coil has been diagnosed, would I be able to do it myself in future if I carried a couple of spares? How involved is it? I can change brake pads, oil and put shelves up and I carry a basic tool kit. Can you tell a failed coil by looking at it? Am I being realistic? Cheers, Dave
  • '93 Escort 1.4 petrol Grinding Gears 22 Nov 2005 (Forum)
t slip if I put my foot down to accelerate. It also doesn?t slip, if I put it in 1st, with the hand brake on, and try to move. The engine labours to the point of stalling, before I put the clutch back in again. There does seem to be a lot of play in the top end, with the gear stick. Is it likely to be worn components in the remote selector unit, of is it more likely to be synchromesh problems in the box itself?
  • Skoda Questions 27 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Skoda don't offer extended warranties so can any one advise as to where I should look bearing in mind I do approx 30k a year 2. Any Octavia owners exeprencied a wobbling through the steering wheel when braking from approx 50mph to roundabouts on dual carriageways? I am also getting a whistling from the nearside front screen when on the m/way. It sounds like the passenger window is slightly down and letting in the air- It is not and it is driving me bonkers!
  • Peugeot 406 queries 13 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Just bought a very nice 99 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI at auction tonight, and notice it needs one or two minor things doing to it. 1.n/s/f and n/s/r/ indicators don't work, although the front wing one does.(Bulbs??) 2.n/s/r/brake light doesn't work.(Again bulb??) 3.Spanner light is on.How do you re-set it if you service a car yourself? 4.I'm assumimg it has climate control, but it's at 14deg,and it doesn't seem to move using the left hand button. Can it be turned down?
  • P Reg Ford Escort 1.6i GLX temp gauge 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Guy said it does work but takes time, not sure about this. Checked all other usuals (lights, emissions, brakes, gears etc), but the gauge is bugging me a bit. Gut feeling is to go with it, as overall and for the price it seems pretty good. Going to do an HPI check on it, but anyone any thoughts on this? Details : P reg, 78000 miles.
  • VW Bora steering wheel shakes violently. 24 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I can rev the engine, which sounds fine, or pump the clutch. It doesn't matter if I'm in or out of gear or on the hand or foot brakes. Someone suggested the power steering fluid but there's plenty of it there. The only other opinion I've heard was there's something wrong with the timing belt but I'd always heard that by the time you think anything is wrong with it your engine is already an expensive door stop.
  • Driving down risk in the community. 23 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Today while driving my company Transit I was severely cut up by a red Ford Fusion belonging to East Sussex fire and Rescue. He caused me to brake hard. I gave him the benefit of the doubt as we all make mistakes. However, as I followed him up to a set of lights in the straight ahead lane which were red he then executed a lane switch into the right filter which was green and proceeded to turn right.
  • Online Ford Spares 5 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Wife recently acquired a Fiesta TDCI and I was wondering if there are any good online retailers (similar to Euro or GSF)selling basic service items such as filters, brake pads etc. I tried a Google, but it kept coming up with US based sites even though I specified a UK search. Also any owners of this model know what the tyre pressures should be and if there is any other oil specification than 5w-30?
  • Liability for rear end accident? 30 May 2005 (Forum)
So we were driving home from a wedding on Sat night, doing about 60mph on a country road when we rounded a gentle corner to find a rabbit sitting in the middle of the road. My first reaction would have been to stand on the brakes. However my wife was driving and she chose instead to drive over the rabbit (wheels straddling it). The rabbit was ok. My question is, if I'd been driving and had stopped dead, and someone rear-ended me, who's fault is it?
