The car has developed a worrying problem, in that it grinds the gears when changing up or down, and even reverse. However, if I double de-clutch, almost always it changes gear ok. I thought that it may have been the clutch on its way out, but that doesn?t slip if I put my foot down to accelerate. It also doesn?t slip, if I put it in 1st, with the hand brake on, and try to move. The engine labours to the point of stalling, before I put the clutch back in again.
There does seem to be a lot of play in the top end, with the gear stick.
Is it likely to be worn components in the remote selector unit, of is it more likely to be synchromesh problems in the box itself?
Should I start looking in the scrap yards now, or is it likely to be fixable by a non professional?

sounds like clutch drag to me ,dont they have those automatic adjusters on them ?where does the clutch bite?top middle or bottom?

If its ALL the gears that are grinding then it could well be clutch drag.

On the other hand, have you changed gearbox oil recently? If the oil is wrong (too thick) then you could get this since it will degrade the synchro action.

Has it got the plastic rachet/pawl adjusting mechanism at the pedal? These can slip/wear and give clutch operating problems.

if it is the auto/adjuster,clutch bite point will vary.fiddly job as well

OK, the situation is slightly different now. If I put my foot right into the carpet, with the clutch, it changes ok. The bite point is I would say, about 1/3 of the way up the travel. I haven't checked the oil as yet, so cannot comment on that point, as to whether it is extra thick or not. Might do an oil change if I can brave the cold long enough.
I will also check if the pawl on the self adjuster is working correctly or not too.
Stay tuned for my results, and thankyou very much to those including HJ who have taken the trouble to give me their ideas thus far.

Sounds like the cable has stretched to thepoint where the adjuster can no longer take up the slack.Change it before it snaps.

Is there any slack in the clutch pedal? Best to take a torch and look underneath to check there are teeth in the quadrant either side of the pawl.

Oil change may be a pig to do if you cant find somewhere to drain from. After about an hour I had managed to syphen most out with a tube.

Try lifting the pedal (against a light resistance) whilst an assistant pulls against the cable at the gearbox end. This resets the adjuster.
