If you accumulate 12 penalty points on your licence you will receive a summons to court, with the likelihood that you will receive a disqualification. The guidelines for the length of disqualification are 6 months if you get 12 or more points within three years, 12 months for a second disqualification within three years, and two years for a third disqualification within three years. If you attend in person you will have the opportunity to make representations to the court and you may be able to get a reduced sentence if you can prove exceptional hardship or have the court agree to a discretionary disqualification.
