Re-Machining 'fragile' components 6 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I've seen a lot of posts on here about useless components ranging from brake pedal clips to timing belt/crankshaft pulleys (The rubber damped ones) Thinking about it, it wouldn't be too hard to remake them out of metal I imagine. I'd have to ask the experts but would it have an impact mechanically? -
Rusty discs 26 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The car like others is absolutely covered in salt and the like, and despite washing it all, and trying to keep the car clean the discs seem to be suffering - I notice when reversing that they now feel gritty when brakes are gently applied. Is there anything I can do? Would pressure washing get rid of minute elements of salt that would otherwise not shift and continue to corrode, or does adding water to the equation make the rusting proces speed-up? -
audi 80 ABK (B4) Clutch problem? 11 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Can anyone advise me if the slave rod attaches to the release arm or just presses against it. The system has been bled when the brakes were done. Many thanks. Martin -
Vectra help required please 11 Jun 2005 (Forum)
My Vectra has just failed it's MOT today , on two brakes pipes . No big deal , but there the one's running down the center of the estate disapearing behind one corner of the diesel fuel tank .So, I have visions of taking the tank off to get to these pipes. -
What happened here then ? 28 Mar 2005 (Forum)
As a rather unhappy looking lady goes to retrieve the wheel, I notice she is walking away from a three-wheeled hyundoo getiz or similar small thing, sat at a very uncomfortable angle. When she picked the wheel up, I could see that the brake drum was still attached to the wheel, and I could see the clean, bright, inside end of four wheelnuts poking through (or the bright spots where four wheel nuts/studs had all suddenly sheared simoultaneously. -
New Car :( 24 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Well...Last week I bought a lovely little Fiesta 1.25 Ghia, W reg with 29k on the clock. It's very tidy and I love it already. But it's got to go - due to the fact that when I brake, my knee touches the steering wheel, and it's generally not very comfy. A shame as my '96 LX wasn't brilliant, but better. I thought the Ghia would be perfect. So, it's got to go. :( What else can I get? -
Nissan QX - High emission and stalling 16 Feb 2005 (Forum)
As some BRer might recall, the emission is still high and the car cut out twice last week, both on me and on my girlfriened while exiting an motorway when we lifted off the throttle. It was not very nice to have no power-assistance to the brakes and steering when exiting motorway. Nissan say they will charge £84 + VAT so I'll wait and see how it goes. Does that sounds right? Any other ideas before I let Nissan loose on my car? Sorry for such a late post. -
LandRover Knackered? 10 Nov 2004 (Forum)
A girl at work has a Landrover Freelander and this morning she parked up and oil was coming out by the front wheel. She thought it was brake fluid but when I opened the bonnet the oil has come from the expansion tank and is everywhere. I took the oil filler cap off and there is a mayonaise type deposit all over the cap with water. I'm no mechanic but it looks like the head gasket has gone big time. -
I don't believe it 27 Jul 2004 (Forum)
There I was, pootling along to work, enjoying the first sunny morning in manchester for a while, when up ahead is a traffic light going from green to amber. Quick check of the mirror, and I begin my slow and I come to a stop and put the hand brake on. I don't understand, therefore, how the woman who drove her big white van into the back of my car managed to not see me. To further complicate things, her English wasn't as good as her Spanish and she had to get someone at the end of the phone to give me the insurance details. -
Audi 80 clutch pedal 23 Jun 2004 (Forum)
My one recent problem relates to the clutch pedal. The pedal will no longer rise to the top of its travel to put it in line with the brake pedal etc. When this happens, gear selection (particularly first and reverse) can be difficult if not impossible. If I nudge the pedal from underneath, it springs back up to where it should be and all's well. -

Attempt on HJ's life!!! 16 Dec 2003 (Forum)
In the telegraph today in HJ's motoring columl our leader mentioned that a mechanic had spotted that one of brake pipes had been cut. Was this an attempt on his life?. Has he upset someone on this forum?. Who would want to harm our beloved leader?. Has he a dark past that has come back to seek revenge?. Has he any skeletons it the cupboard?. -
Rant - last minute motorway exits 31 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Apologies if this has already been done to death previously, but I feel the need to vent my spleen. One of these idiots caused me to brake hard to (narrowly) avoid him this morning. I can't think of a motorway junction which isn't signed at 1 mile, 1/2 mile, 300/200/100 yards, so why do they do it? Is it simply a spectacular lack of awareness? -
Ford Escort Transmission problem 27 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Hi all, I have an Escort 1.6 AUTO, 1998 model which had its front brake pads and discs changed and I noticed a loud 'tick, tick' sound whenever I turn to right. (I had a problem with stalling whenever I start the car first thing in the morning, for a few months now but as it was not troubling much I didn't bother). -
Fitting Bigger Wheels to Vectra 5 Jun 2003 (Forum)
(presumably I can't just transfer my existing tyres.. or can I?) 2. Will the larger wheels have any effect on the steering/braking characteristics of the vehicle? Thanks, Rob. -
VW Passatt 19 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Everything smooth and just glides along and air conditioning works a treat. Oils nice and clean,no smoke from exhaust car doesnt pull under sharp braking. Its a bit worn on the seats and theres a crack in the front headlight and little scratch by rear wheel arch but thats it. Screen price is £5995 its done 85k and has full service history the book all stamped as well as all the individual garage receipts, asked the guy what he can go down to but hes not willing to move much as i want to trade in a kia sportage glx n reg 85k, what should i do ? -
Road rage 15 Mar 2003 (Forum)
In addition to the two incidents I mentioned on the fog lights thread, I witnessed another incident this morning where a BMW overtook another car, slammed on his brakes, jumped out and had 'words' with the other driver. I couldn't turn around to see what happened because I got stuck in a queue. That's three incidents in as many days - what the hell is going on? -
Marea maintanence 15 Dec 2002 (Forum)
To ensure that i get my value for money, i am sticking to basic rules such as oil change every 6 months, regular wash and wax etc. I have booked the car in for a oil change and brake fluid change at halfords, and also asked for a power steering fluid change, I was sure that i read someware that this was good practice ( the car has now done 27,000), but was told by halfords that there is no need to change, there is no drain point, and to drain would involve breaking the curcuit, and therefore a replacement part would be needed - is this true? -
VW Polo is the new Morris Minor 18 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Tried the electrics - everything works! It needs a couple of tyres and a rear light unit, and the brakes are even worse than normal for a Polo, but the body is rock solid and rust free apart from a small hole at the end of one sill, where it has clouted something and taken the paint off. Underpowered, underbraked, but simple, solid, cheap to run and dependable - it has to be the new Morris Minor. -
Mondeo ST24 V6 7 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I was a little disconcerted by how much it pulled to the right when accelerating hard - I've no idea whether that was the one I had, although it was brand new or that they're all like that. But I got used to it and it didn't pull under braking or normal driving. The only niggle was the you wouldn't want to be too wide in the back since the sides of the seats pinch a little. Other than that, fast, handles well, quiet, well equipped. All in all, pretty impressive.
