Handbrakes 15 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I'm having a discussion at the moment, I'll be honest it's one of my pet hates people sat for long periods, say in standing traffic on a motorway with brake lights on. The general concensus seems to be, it's ok why worry about it? I have on occasions thought, after say 10 mins, of this to tap on the window and say 'You do know the handbrake is free?' -

Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 02 1.25 Rear Wheel Noise 1 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Hi, my Fiesta has recently started making a creaking type noise that seems to be coming from the rear wheels when braking. The noise only happens when stopping from low speeds (eg pulling up on the drive) or when stationary. When the handbrake is applied no noise is made. A couple of weeks previous I changed the front disks and pads. -
Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 1998 2.0 abs unit 28 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Please help! My car ford mondeo won't pass the MOT, because the ABS anti braking light doesn't work. According to the mechanics, the cables were cut (I bought this car in May of this year), they said they tried reconnecting the cables, and then changing the light bulb, but it still doesn't work. -
Stopping at Giveways 10 Aug 2008 (Forum)
We now have a culture whereby drivers are actually in such a hurry that they do not stop at giveways unless they really have to by braking at the last minute. Why? Do they always anticipate there is no traffic in the road they are turning into? This is so bad that I now have to anticipate a car always nudging out when I pass a junction. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1997 1.3 needs new clutch cylinder 15 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I have just been told the cause of a severe brake fluid leak is the clutch master cylinder. I have been quoted £100 labour plus parts and possibly a new clutch to repair. However the MOT is also due soon, my machanic reckons we should take it for the MOT and see what happens. -
Daewoo Lanos (1997 - 2002 ) - 97 1.4 clutch wear in general 27 May 2008 (Forum)
pedal travel (bite) or is it just luck taking into factors like how many miles the car has done , would 70k be about normal for a medium car ? i once saw a car program that suggested putting the car in 4th or 5th gear with the hand brake on and dropping the clutch with a bit of welly and if the engine died the clutch was ok.... sounds a bit drastic when the potential seller is watching you?.. thanks -
"Black boxes" in vehicles. 4 Apr 2008 (Forum)
In the event of a crash, it freezes and stores the information at the point of impact, giving the car's speed, engine speed, the angle of the brake and accelerator pedals and what gear the car was in. As it detects impact, it shuts off the fuel tanks, helping to prevent an explosion." Full version: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml? -
Audi A8 (1994 - 2003) - 96 4.2 quatt rattling front pads/caliper carriers 9 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Front pads or callipers are rattling when going over badly surfaced roads. Pads are new and feel snug enough, presume callipers are old, but brakes all work OK. Is the only cure to replace the whole calliper or can I do the carriers separately? New callipers are a whopping £370 + VAT!! Thanks for any help. Year engine etc etc etc etc tc etc. -

Land Rover Range Rover 'Classic' (1970 - 1995) - 1990 3.9 - Keeping used ABS Parts for spares 19 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Do these units keep ok if removed and say boxed up & placed on a shelf? I'm concerned about internal corrosion due to the nature of brake fluid Any advice would be welcome Thanks MM -

Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - '05 TDCi (130 bhp) Replacing pads - open nipple? 15 Feb 2008 (Forum)
. - Open bleed nipple, or not? Haynes manual says open bleed nipple when pushing / winding back piston in brake caliper, to avoid damaging seals elsewhere in the system (master cylinder, I think). Front and rear pad change on MkIII Mondeo in this month's Car Mechanics makes no mention of loosening of bleed nipple. -
Skoda Fabia (2000 - 2007) - Clutch R&R on 2001 Fabia 1.9tdi - Cost 26 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Is 74,000 miles a reasonable life for a clutch in one of these cars - assuming sensible driving - i.e. no boy racer stuff, no clutch riding, but using engine braking, with suitable revs adjustment, as a norm? -

Was truck blocking outside lane of broken down? 13 Dec 2007 (Forum)
If I may just add one more reply to the earlier thread about the 'idiot' truck driver blocking traffic in the outside lane on the A1(M) on the approach to an accident scene: If the lorry was stationary, isn't it possible it was broken down? It might have been in the tailback earlier, stopped and then been unable to restart. Parking brake stuck on? Half-shaft snapped? Gear linkage broken? Clutch gone? These things happen. I've come across several cases of vehicles broken down in lanes 2 or 3 of motorways including a Cadillac! -
Smart Car Drivers 9 Dec 2007 (Forum)
To be kind, I suspect it is because they are small and nimble and can dart into places better than a lumbering people carrier or whatever. I always get the impression that if a Smart driver braked hard enough, the thing could somersault. -

Pedestrian not dipping his lights! 30 Oct 2007 (Forum)
For a moment i thought a motorcyclist was coming straight at me off the pavement. I was temporarily blinded and could easily have braked hard and lost it in the split second I had to make a decision. Why he /they /she did this I don't know as there was no reason for it at all. Just shows you have to be on the ball all the time for the unexpected. -
MGV - ABS now legal requirement? 30 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Apparently I can't take the test in our lorry because it doesn't have ABS. Questions: 1. How do you implement ABS on an air-driven braking system, or are small lorries all hydraulic now? 2. Is ABS now a standard fitting in lorries? 3. Does it actually make any difference to controlling the lorry in an emergency stop given the size of the vehicle?
