  • skoda superb 1.9TDi 130 PD - electrical fault? 25 Apr 2011 (Forum)
and the glowplug light started to flash. I arrived home and resolved to contact my dealer. Later, when it was darker I noticed the brake lights were stuck on. After some pedal waggling they went off. Presumably a faulty micro switch. I wondered if the two are connected or just a coincidence. Could a faulty brake light switch cause the display to issue a warning?
  • Drivers on Roundabouts - A moan! 15 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Then the driver in the left lane is to lazy to follow the left lane of the roundabout around (granted it may be quite a sharp deflection but its mainly car drivers who do this so not an excuse) so they cut straight across into the middle lane so as to follow a straight line across the roundabout and thus force the middle lane driver into the right lane or to brake as the right lane driver is already in the right hand lane on the roundabout.  It restricts capacity and effectively makes the 3 lane roundabout a 2 lane roundabout!  And don't get me started on the middle lane drivers who on their exit decide that they can just pull across into the left hand lane as they go into their exit arm thus forcing the left hand lane drivers (if they have followed the correct path) to brake!
  • ABC (absolute b****y carelessness) 14 Sep 2010 (Forum)
That happens to us fairly often because I don’t like to go hell for leather down hills then brake for the bends.  Generally the overtaking car has to brake heavily before the bend and when the road is wet it is dodgy, especially after a dry period.  But, the road was dry.  This time we rounded the bend to see the white Citroen at right angles to the road.
  • Peugeot 607 - 607 3.0 Auto 'Clonks' into Reverse Gear 31 May 2010 (Forum)
I was looking at a 2004 607 3.0 V6 at a car auction last week, the car looked in excellent condition but when I put the car in reverse with my foot on the foot brake it felt as though the gearbox jolted into reverse with a fair bit of force, sending a bit of a vibration throughout the car. I tried it several times and everytime I selected reverse the same jolt happened.
  • Ford Fiesta - Whats this coming through the floor? 26 May 2010 (Forum)
Hi all I have recently had my brakes fixed.  In the last week or so I have been having problems with the accelerator peddle.  I have on a few occasions now caught the accelerator when I have pushed the brake, and it has just felt 'wrong'.
  • Kangaroo cars 14 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The plight of the occupants of the car speeding at 120mph toward a road junction in the USA, without throttle control or brakes was truly fear inspiring. I too had a sticking throttle problem with the second new car that I bought, although thankfully not the brakes. A stiff throttle cable was the source of the problem. In slow traffic, to avoid jumping into the car in front I had to slip the clutch and use the handbrake.

  • Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 2004 2.0 Petrol Review 15 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Fuel economy commute now around 31/32 Fuel economy long journeys 35-36 Even hit 36.5 on long journey to Wales this weekend and this was with some mixed driving too. 2000 Miles of motorring so far has been faultless. The rear brakes did need re-aliginging but this is a known c5 issue. The car is very quiet and rides the motorway so quietly, any other car i ride in now seam to have hard suspension. Seats also very comfotable.
  • Do you recognise your car's cries for help ? 13 Mar 2008 (Forum)
It made me think of a few noises that I can diagnose by sound alone; driveshafts clicking, propshafts clicking (but differently), worn brake shoes and brake pads grinding, cracked coil spring rattle, door seal whistle, big end rattle, main bearing rumble, timing chain clatter, tappet rattle and exhaust blowing. Perhaps other Backroomers would like to complete the list ?

  • 214 bad vibration thro steering wheel 28 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I have checked the tyre pressures and were a little uneven however made no difference and went through the MOT with this problem so assuming its nothing loose in the steering rack etc. Had an issue lately with the brakes as the drivers side caliper had shed its bolts and garage said it must have been due to vibration - not a great experience loosing 1 wheel braking. Has anyone got any ideas as its driving me mad when I drive it and dont really think its safe if its causing things to come loose.
  • New driver - car handling 10 Feb 2006 (Forum)
There were no brake/skid marks on the road, it was dry and about 4c. so not icy. The problem, as far as I could see was that he had five passengers in a small car and what looked like low tyre pressure. He had not realised that the car would drive like a pig with that load.
  • ABS light on/off volvo 850 M plate 14 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Yesterday, after about 15 miles & over 50 mph the ABS light suddenly lit up. Hmmm. Check behind & apply brake progressively. Sure enough, lock up. Get to destination, park up & return some 15 mins later. This time no abs light. I haven't progressievly braked again, just in case I provoke the gremlin. Now, do I need to worry?
  • Uninformative Owner's Manuals 22 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I guess they are covering the user operation (fair enough) and product liability angles, but I really would like some more info - on VSA for example, which wheels are braked and under what circumstances (it says not all of the braking system is under VSA control, whatever that means), and when might I want to turn it off? (it tells me I can but not why I might want to).
  • What happened? 3 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Cruising down the motorway at roughly 80 in reasonably light traffic. In outside lane, plenty of room to the car in front. BMW in front brakes hard for no apparent reason then continues on, I react and brake hard (as you do) and then carry on. About 1 mile later (so maybe not connected) the wheel starts to wobble violently, kind of left to right, so bad that I am having trouble controlling the car.
  • which pads and discs for pug 306? 8 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi I need new front discs and pads all round on my 98 306 xsi (2.0 16v). I would like my braking performance to be better so what would anyone suggest I get? I drive normally - that is to say no track days, no particularly frequent late braking - just normal road use. Disc-wise I will go for the same plain ventilated design I have now, but what make?

  • This month's 'Star Letter' 16 Apr 2002 (Forum)
My speed was 70mph. I then noticed that the lorry appeared to be slowing dramatically although it showed no brake lights. It was stationary ! I had no time to brake. I glanced in my rear view mirror and pulled out intio a stream of vehicles all of which were travelling at 80 mph or so. I made it ( just ). I've no idea what happened to the vehicles following me."
  • Baggy Corsas and FSH 9 Feb 2002 (Forum)
the engine was leaking oil from every seal and gasket (blocked crankcase breather, or worn rings?), the front brake discs were badly scored, the brake pedal went almost to the floor, the throttle cable was almost seized, and the gearchange linkage was so worn that I never did find fifth. Also one tyre was down to the legal limit, and one a little way the wrong side of it.
  • hybrids 16 Mar 2022 (Forum)
Interested in Volvo XC40 20/22 plate Some mention 'mild hybrid' non plug in which generates lecky through braking. Dont want a pure EV - long in tooth and feel uncomfortable from pure ICE as these extras surely add more to problems of servicing etc. Should I be worried.  It seems these mods are being forced onto us.
