Did you always intend on going north? Not everyone did, but probably a better decision long term than those that went south, then south again... then across the sea.

Back to cars I agree with you, and nowadays Toyota is king although it was some time before the ubiquitous LRs, in their much simpler form, lost popularity.

During selling my old car, one buyer called me to the boot while the other was at the bonnet. When I went to the front, he had just finished doing up the coolant cap. He then asked to take it for a spin. Thrashed it then opened the bonnet. Proclaimed the gasket had just gone. The coolant tank was thick with black oil and trickling over. I took pictures of it. The dip stick however looked normal. He insisted the car was almost worthless yet he still wanted to buy it for parts. I took pictures, including a discreet picture of the buyer as something made me uneasy at the time.

Note the last time the car was driven about 4 weeks earlier, a garage had done a pressure test, checked the exhaust and more, advising there were no indications of gasket issues. Read more

Hi,

I bought a brand new Clio hybrid in January. It has some electrical and braking issues although no breakdowns yet. I have contacted the dealer several times to book an appointment but they are ignoring my emails and phone calls.

I am concerned that the 6 month statutory rights period will be finishing soon and the dealer is just wasting time. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, any faults appearing within the first 6 months are assumed to be present also at the time of purchase. A customer doesn’t have to prove it. However, after 6 months, the onus is with the customer to prove.

I would like to know if I would still have consumer rights equivalent to the first 6 months even after the 6 months in the above scenario. From my side, the faults happened in first 6 months and I informed the dealer to investigate it but the dealer didn’t intentionally act promptly and ignored all communication. Read more

My son is a mechanic and works with 6 other mechanics who have altogether 150 years experience in dealerships. Despite all that they've all missed things buying secondhand cars and a few disasters on the way with purchases including new. If readers knew what goes on in most dealerships they'd be very nervous even buying a new car. You can go from 3 years Kwik Fit experience and no apprenticeship or other experience straight into most dealerships servicing new cars these days. Anyway, new cars cost a lot of money and if you have concerns then your dealership has to address them. Go in with a friend as witness and ask to speak to the Service Manager and then politely give him a letter in writing what you are concerned about and ask for a response from him in writing. That way they know they are obligated to do something rather than ignore you as it wouldn't look good if there is a fault.

There seems to be a conspiracy to conceal information concerning which Mini has which auto box. I have been trying to find out whether a 2011 Mini One Convertible (1.6 petrol) has the CVT transmission which was so bad that it gave rise to legal action by owners. I've identified a car I might be interested in, but my interest would cease if it had the problematic auto box. Searching for this info using various search terms has proved fruitless, so can anyone here provide definitive information please? Read more

Hello,

I’m trying to help a friend in the UK who has a 2000 Citroen Xsara 1.4i hatchback (manual transmission).

The AC is not working — he paid £100 to get it fixed — £35 for diagnostics, £65 for re-gassing. But after just a week, there’s no cold air once again. He went back and they said there's a leak and that the condenser needs to be replaced, but because the car is too old, manufacturers no longer make that condenser model.

I was able to find these two sites that supposedly have replacement condensers:

www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/condenser-10455/citroe...8
(Assuming the N1 corresponds to the right model)

alvadi.ee/en/spare-parts/citroen/xsara-n0-n1-n2-20.../

I’m not sure if either of those are legitimate. Is anyone familiar with them?

Also wondering if there are any thoughts or other suggestions in general. I did find this other thread (www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=65647) that mentions that it could also be the pollen filter or stuck heater flaps.

Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated! Read more

We’ve had an MFI kitchen from just before they went bust so about 17 years. On delivery it was missing a key corner post that took days to come plus an extra door that they didn’t want back.

They were pretty cheap but have been OK until recently when a couple of the white slab doors started to peel alarmingly. The foil just became completely unglued and split off in big sections. Luckily I’ve found that B&Q stock generic replacements for about £40 for a full size door. The hinge spacing is different, simply requiring new positions for the mountings on the cabinet. I also needed to juggle old and new doors to ensure the slight colour difference wasn’t obvious. I had to do it quickly before it became an excuse to have a full refit. £80 and a couple of hours well spent.
